Ars Technica: Killzone 2 Preview: presently polished, pretty, predictable

Ars Technica writes: "'F*** that sh*t,' exclaimed Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Stuart Tilley as I played through the single-player Killzone 2 demo at Sony's private E3 meeting room. The words came in response to my questioning of the shooter's potential inclusion of old-school corridor shooter mechanics like on-rails vehicular sections. "Killzone 2 is about grabbing a gun and kicking f***ing ass," he continued. "Oh, and doing it with a game that's just beautiful to look at."

Killzone 2 is a lot like Gears of War: it's a beautiful game that is the epitome of its genre in one tight package. At its core, it's simply an extremely polished version of the same games we've been playing for so long. And while Killzone 2 certainly looks amazing in motion-Tilley made a point of saying that the game's developers in Geurilla had definitely silenced the naysayers of the original trailer-it's still, at its core, just another FPS."

As a huge FPS fan, no first person shooter is "Just another FPS". Sure the formula is the same, gun at the bottom, enemy in front. But the feel or experiences can vary as much as any other genre. They all have those small subtle difference that when put together add up to something much bigger.

I'm not after "revolution", I like the formula, I'm looking for progression, and in Killzone I believe I'll find it by the bucket load.

FantasyStar5778d ago

I like your phrase. You don't mind if I quote you right?

Kleptic5778d ago

some good comments at the source's wall...some one points out 'what makes a great fps', and the writer makes it very clear that he is a halo nut...

most of us understand that Halo 1 did a ton for the genre, especially for console controls...but Halo 3?...no...it added some cool community features, but that was it...the innovation came 7 years ago in the gameplay department...and little has changed since...which isn't a bad thing...just giving my thoughts on why its unfair to criticize some shooters on 'not being innovative', but then give Halo 3 a 9.5...

also, the writer points out that the lean and peak cover system worked flawlessly, and saved his ass numerous times...this is something NEVER put in a shooter before...that makes it an innovation...and one, that from his own mouth, works beautifully...he then goes on about how linear this level of the single player game is, and claims that the single player will make or break the title...knowing next to nothing about MP for it...

which is another pre-rendered opinion...CoD 4 was easily the best and most played shooter of 2007...it did nothing new...and had a very scripted single player with the same lame checkpoints and triggers from EVERY CoD game to date...yet the gameplay and action and visuals just fit right...but MP in a shooter is almost more important now than the single player aspect...the campaign has to be good...but the mulitplayer has to be as addictive as prescription pain meds...CoD 4 had a decent, but extremely short, SP...and a near flawless MP (although the game still requires some balancing in that regard)...

we will see how the MP turns out...but the game is looking extremely impressive so far...and if the innovations the game introduces work 'perfectly'...I really don't see what the problem is...

how they can say its just another first person shooter with the new first person cover system that has never been done before in a fps game, the hit response system, this game has a lot more to offer than just graphics.

Topshelfcheese5778d ago

I have to say, I wasn't thinking the game was looking that great graphically, until I saw it yesterday in that hands-on demo. I can't pinpoint what exactly change, but it really got me excited to play it now, and the online stuff sounds great.

Fishy Fingers5778d ago (Edited 5778d ago )

Your wait maybe shorter than you think. Watch this > http://www.n4g.com/events_e...

About 3/4 in the Sony guy said and I quote "public beta". Funny though the interviewer completely skips over it and it isnt mentioned again. But its there. I'm keeping my ear to the ground (eye on n4g o_O) for this one. beta beta beta....

Oh also mentions one more Killzone related secret to be released during E3, did he let that secret slip?

Kleptic5778d ago

yeah great point...I caught that too about details being dropped each day on KZ2's MP...my guess is that by the end of it there will be sign-ups online for the beta...

that will be a tough one to get into for sure though...

everytime I see this game I get more impressed by it...no offense to Insomniac...I liked Resistance 1...and resistance 2 is looking great so far as well...but this is easily at the top of my list for most anticipated game...

RealityCheck5778d ago

I would rather play "just another FPS" than pretend to play music with Wii Music. It takes many genre to please everyone, don't take our FPS away.

klashawnd5778d ago

What do you want? Was Halo 3 just another FPS? All it was was Halo 2.5 with Forge.

Did he preview Gears 2? Is that just another TPS?

And what was so "innovative" about GTA4? That game wasn't even as good as San Andreas if you ask me.

These people drive me crazy when they place and project their own expectations for what a game should be into their reviews/previews and not take a game for what it is.

Killzone 2 doesn't have to be the FPS to end all FPSs. It just needs to be fun in all aspects. Gears is fun as hell. Halo is fun as hell. Warhawk is fun as hell. That's all that really matters in the end.

Kleptic5778d ago

GTA peaked at Vice City imo...and yeah GTAIV was only better than GTAIII...

gimping features that were loved in the past, and giving the lamest gun lineup of any GTA game to date...and have a somewhat broken camera/driving mechanic...yeah, it might be the most overrated game of this generation imo...right up there with Halo 3...

vasilisk5778d ago

Let's not forget COD4. Where's the innovation in it? Who can name a truly innovative FPS the last couple of yeras. Where's the innovation in Battlefield? But when it comes to killzone everyone goes "just another FPS", "not innovative", "polished but just an FPS".
What did they expect, the second coming? It's an FPS for God's shake and it looks like no other out there...

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro63d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7263d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_63d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga63d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2363d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200064d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin64d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole64d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix64d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198964d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Michiel198964d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor368d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar368d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg367d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149367d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138368d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim368d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC368d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138368d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle368d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76368d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM367d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger367d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca368d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

potatoseal367d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright367d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Top 20 Best PlayStation 3 Games (20-11)

Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Is the PlayStation 3 retro? This is a surprisingly hard question to answer as the system definitely has the age to be considered retro, having launched in 2006, over 15 years ago now. But with it being home to so many massive games, many of which still hold up today and in fact were released for the PlayStation 4 when that console was released, make the PS3 a retro console that doesn’t feel retro."

shinoff2183739d ago

No ps3 is not retro. I dont even consider ps2 era retro. All imo.

shinoff2183739d ago

Typically, the term retro is given to items which are at least 20 years old (but not yet 40 years old).

Quick google search

badz149739d ago

No the PS3 is not yet a retro console. But if you're gonna put 1 game from a series in this list, then LBP2 should be there instead of the original, Motorstorm PR is also an overall better game than the 1st game and to put Tools of Destruction over A Crack in Time is a blasphemy when ACiT is the best game in the series.
