My ‘Dark Souls II’ Redemption Has Been Ruined by ‘Bloodborne’

Vice: From Software's celebrated 2014 title has received the "definitive" treatment—but I'm too busy with its gothic successor.

llxKonanxll3310d ago

I more than likely won't get into DS2:SoFS. I've watched reviews, seen some walk-throughs, and in my opinion it's underwhelming in comparison to the other games.

nucky643310d ago

If I hadn't already played it, I'd have it for sure...but since I've beaten it couple of times, I'm going to stick with bloodborne and then witcher3.

rezzah3309d ago

My reasoning is the same. Bloodborne is a great game to play that will transition well into The Witcher 3.

Psychotica3309d ago

Maybe it's just not for you, but it is an awesome game. I almost never complete a game more than once but I completed this twice on my 360 and I am working at it again on my PC.

KwietStorm_BLM3309d ago

DS2 is certainly not a bad game, but it's not as good as Demon's Souls or the first Dark Souls..or Bloodborne.

Vegamyster3309d ago

Not the best game but it's still has its moments.

xabmol3309d ago

Definitely made by the "B-Team," but still a great game. Logged over 500 hours on the PC version and plan to platinum it on the PS4.

Really wish the souls games would make death a major gameplay mechanic like it was in Demon's. Made co-oping/invading a must and world tendency was awesome. All my chars in DS2 have 99 effigies in storage, just waaay to plentiful and BFascetics are a far cry from WT. BB just eliminated that all together, much to my dismay...

wsoutlaw873309d ago

World tendency was kind of stupid if you were playing online. There was almost no way to get it fully to one side or the other and needed to much to change it. Cool idea but not done right or balanced well. I miss the excitement of an invasion in bloodborne.

Lombax3309d ago

@wsoutlaw87

How so? I thought it was pretty straightforward and simple. Die repeatedly for BWT. Don't die and beat bosses For WWT.

And co-op definitely helps you get WWT.

GameSpawn3309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

@Lombax & wsoutlaw87
World tendencies while online in Demon's Souls were affected by EVERYONE and averaged across how everyone played, so 90% of the time while online most areas were "grey" never fully White or Black meaning the special events for those extremes never happened. However, the developer had the ability on special days to force the WT fully White (Winter Solstice) or Black (Halloween) regardless of what players did to shift the WT.

If you played completely offline, you had much more control over the world tendency shifts. It was easier to get them full white first, complete those events, die in human form a few times to get to full black, and complete those events last (usually killing ANY Pure Black WT event character shifts +3 to White but only once you leave and come back - hence why you want to finish all Black WT events in one go).

It's a great game, just not the best Souls game, as far as I've heard.

Clown_Syndr0me3309d ago

I probably wont get it, tried Bloodborne but had it for three days and havent beat first boss yet. So bored of running around the same little area for hours on end.
Really wish there was a casual mode so I could actually experience the game, but unfortunately Ill probably just give up as I feel Im wasting my time.

Sniperwithacause3309d ago

Same boat as you are. Not my type of game, but I bought it anyways. Hopefully I can progress enough to be at the game.

HammadTheBeast3309d ago

If you haven't gotten far, try and easier weapon. Learn the dodging system well enough and it gets to be easier. I'd put points into health and strength as well.

DragonKnight3309d ago

Seems like you're trying to go through it quickly. That's something you can't really do with these games until you're really familiar with them. Sure, it's not for everyone and I understand the tedium of having to continuously go through an area feeling like you're not getting anywhere, but these games are all about persistence, patience, and memory. If either of you need help with anything, you can always summon the help you need.

wakeNbake3309d ago

Maybe you just suck. This game is difficult but its never unfair, just learn from your mistakes and you'll be fine.

700p3309d ago

or maybe the game is too hard. pls

Revengeance3309d ago

This game is challenging but too hard? That's not a valid excuse IMO. I have 2 friends who have NEVER played a Souls game a day in their life and are progressing through Bloodborne just fine.

People are exaggerating its difficulty.

Agreed with you BTW wakeNbake

Maxor3309d ago

Calling people suck doesn't help. The Soul games are hard but that's not why some people can't get into them. It's the huge ramp in difficulty at the early stages in the game that just simply turn potential fans away.

I think an option to have real coop would bring a lot of people into the genre. Right now a lot of noobs are quitting at the Cleric Beast because they have no idea that they can summon a coop partner to help.

MysticStrummer3309d ago

Yeah it's so unfairly hard that people have finished the game without ever leveling up once.

xabmol3309d ago

I'm honestly baffled by people that have such a hard time with this game. I thought it funny at first that people couldn't make it to the cleric beast let lone kill it. Now I find it just plain sad. Especially for those who claim to have spent hours (5 or more!!) just to give up on the first boss.

MasterCornholio3309d ago

Getting to the cleric beast was harder than fighting it. Plus I had some problems with Father G but I managed to beat him with a broken controller. Then everyone scared me with the Blood Starved Beast. He was easy. Then there was the scary hunter with the machine gun. Well he did me a favor and rolled off the tower.

The game does have its difficult moments but I haven't raged yet with it.

Clown_Syndr0me3309d ago

I don't think it's sad at all, it's sad to put others down because they struggle at thimgs you might not.

I've never played a game like this and I work a lot. I have perhaps 1-2 hours a night to play and I just can't do this boss. I don't have the coordination, I tense up and panic. It's annoying. I know the methods I just can't physically get my hands to do what I want. It's really a shame as I love the theme and environment of the game.
I haven't given up yet though, hopefully soon things will click in place as I 2ant to experience the rest!

xabmol3309d ago

Not trying to put others down. I just find it hard to empathize with people who have working thumbs and no idea how to use them. This game is rated mature, you've had 17 years and more than a few thumb-wars to prepare...

Circle + R1 = win! C'mon!

Dir_en_grey3309d ago

if you actually played the game or "ran around" you would know that there are more than a couple of place you could go first before even fighting a boss, or the other boss whichever you were talking about, if you actually played it.

Vestten3309d ago

I don't understand how people find Bloodborne so hard. I'm scratching my head. It's not even close to Demon Souls or either Dark Souls on its level of difficulty. I have beat every boss I've come across. I have defeated 5 bosses so far. First one took me two tries, second bet in first try, third took me four, fourth on first try and fifth on my first try. All you have to do is up grade character and weapons which takes a little grinding, but the bosses are easy or easier than Dark Souls boss battles. I mean dodge hit, dodge hit, not difficult. I've played through two dungeons and beat the bosses in them as well. There are three boss battles pet dungeon at least the ones I played so that actually makes 11 boss battles and I beat all the dungeon bosses except one on my first try. If you can't beat the bosses you don't know how to play this kind of game and should go back to shooters or racers or whatever you are use to playing. I'm not trying to mean, but this isn't for you. But hard, not really. It just takes some work on the front end. Grind, level, and repeat til you are strong enough to take a hit, then dodge, hit repeat. if you have fought a boss a couple of times you should know how they move and their hit patterns. The best weapons to start with are the ax and pistol. In fact I still use the axe the most and I have about 8 different main weapons. I don't even use my secondary weapons, shield, pistol, rifle, torch, etc. if you are really struggling start over use the two weapons I suggested, use the first or second class, grind for a couple hours, level up weapon and character then try again. You're making harder than it is. I die more from just regular stuff than I ever do from bosses. That being said the third boss in the cathedral was my toughest battle but once you learn how she moves, she's not hard either. Good luck!

WellyUK3309d ago

Ye Bloodborne is a cake walk compared to the souls games. Only hard boss is Ebrietas, even he is an optional boss.

Although to be fair DS2 was more cheese than hard IMO.

thekhurg3309d ago

Dodge hit dodge hit is kind of boring gameplay don't you think?

Owvi3309d ago

WOW YOU'RE SO GOOD BRO. PLEASE GO ON ABOUT HOW GOOD AND TALENTED YOU ARE WOW

MysticStrummer3309d ago

Yeah this game is definitely easier than the Souls games, but still harder than most other games and that's where the problem is for people who are used to the Normal difficulty being so damn easy these days.

remixx1163309d ago

@khurg

Oh yeah dodge hit dodge hit is boring, but so is point shoot point shoot, gas break turn gas break turn, run jump run jump, and punch kick punch kick. Well that's if you wanna be an ass about it, any game can be summed up in a couple words but we all know that not how its actually played.

Stick to your auto heal and instant reload aim assist style games bro.

That's how I felt about Demons Souls when it came out. I probably finished it after about 6 months, I just kept at it. Almost done with Bloodborne, it will be the 3rd 'Souls' game I finished. You just have to get used to it, at some point something will click and you'll understand why these games are so great.

KevWriter3309d ago

Level up a lot at the beginning, and the first few bosses become pushovers.

reaperofsouls3309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

@ clownsyndrome

1st boss? you mean cleric beast or father gasoline!

cleric beast is optional so you do need to kill yet!

father gasoline can pretty difficult so i'd level up my weapon a character before trying to beat him

SpinalRemains1383309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

Try playing it with a turn based attitude.

Dont swing until you dodge the beasts swing. Repeat. Lure one atta time and learn the jump attack.

You'll be fine, man. You have to play Souls games in 2nd gear. You can only go into 4th gear when u have two guests, and even then your stamina drains and you have lulls.

DafunkyRebel3309d ago

you should trade it in, cause the worst is yet to come and if you can't take your time and get better in the first area then there is NO WAY in hell you're going to beat Father Gasciogne

robtion3309d ago

Just summon some help and play in co-op. Its easy mode and will help you progress.

SilentNegotiator3309d ago

You may as well just play an easy hack and slash game; the struggle/gameplay *IS* experiencing Bloodborne. It's very light and subtle on story.

nix3309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

You know everytime i feel like i can't finish a level, i think of millions of other people who have cleared it and tell myself to go and clear it. It's just a game where you need to be patience and press the right buttons at the right time. Clearing levels isn't like running a marathon or climbing Mount Everest.

Bloodborne isn't as hard as other Souls series. Just give yourself a couple of more hours, level up the character, level up health and stamina. Take a deep breath and finish that damn monster. That's how finished my first Souls game, Demon's Souls. Took me more than 3 months though.. Lol.

But then again.. It's Bloodborne. For some it really is like running a marathon or climbing Mount Everest.

rezzah3309d ago

I had trouble too, then I got a player to aid me in battle. While one distracted him the other attacked him from behind or the sides.

The battle was still very intense near the end, but we still managed to beat him. If you are aiming to soloing everything at first then you better adapt your skills quickly or the game (mainly the bosses) will destroy you.

nix3309d ago

wait until he meets the butchers and his brothers... hehehehe...

One swing. Dead.

I will get DS2 again as I never played any of the dlc. But yeah bloodborne is just awesome, the world is just unreal, love the art style.

xabmol3309d ago

The 3 DLC's are better than the rest of the game. I wish they put as much effort into the main games level design.

Nesflix3309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

I don't get why people say DS2 isn't a good game. It's a fantastic game! Granted, I actually never picked up the first Dark Souls during its initial release though I have played it. Had I played DS1 before DS2 I would probably say DS2 isn't as great but I can't agree that it's a bad game. It's an extremely punishing game with an incredible story just like all of the other souls games. The only thing I think I would have a problem with is the graphics downgrade. I saw a gameplay demo some time back that showed incredible graphics compared to the released version. Loved DS2's atmosphere as much as I loved DS1's, I love the soundtrack and story. I'm definitely getting it on PS4.

thehobbyist3309d ago

It's not a bad game. Just the weakest in a series of great games. It gets more flack than it deserves

legendkilla3309d ago

Yeah I've had a blast with all the souls and Bloodborne games! All top notch IMO

SCW19823309d ago (Edited 3309d ago )

The way your character fast walks around everywhere in this game really bugs me. Some of the animations just seem extremely lacking compared to bloodborne and demons and dark souls.

PurpHerbison3309d ago

Loose floaty movement. Has a terrible deadzone default. And yes, the animations do lack in comparison.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno25d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3325d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree25d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga25d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno25d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.

9 Years Later, Does Bloodborne Deserve All The Praise It Gets?

Saad from eXputer: "Almost a decade later, it's time to take the nostalgia goggles off and accept that Bloodborne has long been surpassed by its successors."

jznrpg27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Yes, yes it does. It’s still a great game. Elden Ring isn’t better just different and a bit easier . I like that you have to be aggressive but smart in Bloodborne

thorstein27d ago

I literally replayed it recently and it's better than I remember. I think it's like going back to a beloved book and noticing things I hadn't before.

raWfodog27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Yo! I was getting ready to reply with the exact same four words you started with lol. Yes, I think Bloodborne has withstood the test of time and remains a great game. That’s why all the fans are hoping for a sequel someday. Hoping that we can catch that magic again with a new storyline.

Leeroyw27d ago

Yes. Just replayed it a few days ago. My first Platinum. And yes. I rage quitted so many times and called it BS too when I started. It's tight. The combat is amazing and the lore is rich.

GamingSinceForever27d ago

Elden Ring was easier? I don’t know about that at all. I remember leveling up in Bloodborne and breezing through it. In Elden Ring no matter how powerful I got I was still catching a beat down from every boss.

thorstein26d ago

That's due to scaling enemies. I remember not doing Haligtree untill near the end and having enemies withstand almost a full blast from Azur's Glintstone Staff Comet Azure. My level was quite high.

Melee characters are not fun in that game, especially for the Elden Beast.

Bloodborne's Potential Remaster Continues To Be Sony's Biggest Missed Opportunity

"Sony is missing out on a hugely profitable opportunity by ignoring fan demands for a Bloodborne remaster and PC port," says Ahmed from eXputer.

thorstein55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software. What missed opportunity? I am sure the people at From Software know what they are doing. Especially since they are hiring devs instead of laying them off.

Maybe do an article about that instead of writing a hit piece on them acting like they don't know how to run their business.

55d ago
-Foxtrot55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

To be fair Hidetaka Miyazaki said in an interview

“Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware.”

So the ball kind of is in Sonys court, it feels like a missed opportunity because it’s something people really want and Sony just hasn’t really been bothered to get it off the ground. There was rumours it was at one point but it all went silent.

Cacabunga54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Sony has been missing nothing but opportunities for a few years now.. since GOW release, it’s worrying silence we’ve been getting..

As for Bloodborne, imo it would be too soon to release it because PS4 game still looks phenomenal..

Bloodborne REMAKE I think will be PS6 launch title by Bluepoint. I truly hope so! 2 gens later we can get the same wow effect as Demons Souls.

Eonjay54d ago

He is right because it is Sonys IP but a little further back he also explained that they only work on one game at a time. This means that From must also be available. In other words it could already be in the pipeline. Ecen if that is the case, it's still up to Sony to reveal it when they are ready. As ever, I prefer not to hear about it until it's about 3 to 6 months from releasing.

CrashMania55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

'Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software'

Actually Sony owns the IP, same with Demon's Souls. I think they'd prefer if From did the work on any future of both of those though, but if Sony wanted to they could have those off to anyone else to work on them, like the DS remake.

thorstein55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Yeah. Thanks for the info.

But I still think that remasters should wait a generation. And Blue Point did Demon's Souls which was superb.

It can be a huge risk. And I think Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted that it would be a PS6 title. I don't he has no say in what happens, it's a partnership.

--Onilink--54d ago

To be honest, if there is a remake/remaster (not that it needs one) I would prefer someone else to handle it, like they did with Demon Souls

From many perspectives From Soft is an amazing developer, BUT, on a technical level they are far from impressive, both in terms of dated visuals (again, on a technical level, not art/design) and usually poor performance.

And what is the point of a remake/remaster if not to provide a visual and performance enhancement to a game that already nailed the rest?

Michiel198954d ago

@thorstein what huge risk? Part of one of the most well known ip's in gaming nowadays, there's not much risk there when it comes to a remake.

thorstein53d ago

@Michiel

I meant remasters in general are a huge risk, not Bloodborne.

Bloodborne isn't, but I think it's going to be on PS6, like how Demon's Souls went from PS3 to PS5.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thorstein,

Wow, your post seems angry..relax it's an opinion.

And btw, it is on Sony, they have the exclusive right to the game, on top of that, they could have easily, at bare minimum, offered an official 60fps patch, with a few extras and charged people $10 to upgrade or $30-40 for new buyers.

I believe I saw an interview where , FromSoft said it was all up to Sony on a sequel and other dealing with the game.

A "hit peice", that serious huh?..relax lol.
