Retro Studios is Working on a Secret Wii U Game With a New Engine

Retro Studios, the Nintendo-owned Texas studio behind the Metroid Prime series and the last two Donkey Kong Country games, has been working on a new title since late 2013, but we know very little. It seems this is because Nintendo is doing their best to keep it under wraps. According to Tamaki from Unseen64, the team that specializes in uncovering the facts behind cancelled game projects, Retro's new game is on Wii U (as expected), and will use a new engine. What do you hope to see next from Retro?

It better be Metroid... it's been too long.

SteamPowered3331d ago

Ssssssh!! The title said it was a SECRET.

Activemessiah3331d ago

It better be..... Superman U.... >_>

Ck1x3331d ago

If it's not going to be Metroid I don't care for the small details! I also want them to work on something new, but only after they do the Metroid Prime series justice again...

deadfrag3331d ago

Metroid praise the sun;make it happen Nintendo !

Blues Cowboy3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

Metroid please.

Now, please be aware that I love new IPs. I'm all about creativity and development without limits. But Nintendo foolishly tasked Retro with a DK clone rather than a Metroid title, and they have to course-correct.

That said, Metroid could well make for an NX launch title.

Ark_3331d ago

Gotta love their DK, though.

marloc_x3331d ago

I do believe Retro consciously chose to make Tropical Freeze..

deadpoolio3163331d ago

Retro asked to make DK Country Returns also...Nintendo didn't force them to make anything, they wanted to make them

Spikeantestor3330d ago

If the theory that Zelda was moved to the NX proves true than I think Nintendo will have to do something to make people think they are still fully supporting the Wii U. It may get ugly if Nintendo doesn't release anything AAA for the Wii U from now till (when I assume the NX will launch) 2017.

Metroid Prime Dev "Let Down" As Original Credits Excluded From Remaster

Currently, the original developers are credited via a generic slate.

It's safe to say that it's the original developers who conceptualised and built these games in such a way that they're worthy of a remaster or remake today. Even if they had nothing to do with the new iteration, the dev team behind a remaster would be nowhere without the original vision – and so, the original dev team deserves a place in the credits of a remaster. That's exactly how former Retro studios engineer Zoid Kirsch feels.

Based on the work of the original development team.

That's pretty low..

Double_O_Revan457d ago

Depending on how long the credits are for the current team, I can see why it would be decided not to essentially double that.

Welshy457d ago (Edited 457d ago )

How long or short credits are is irrelevant. Every man or woman who put their time into the creation of anything (tv, movies, animation etc too) should have their names stamped on it, no excuses.

Noone realistically sits and reads every name and actually thanks them, but it's important to the people involved to have it there for what small validation or thanks it brings them. A little thing they can show their friends and family for years to come and feel proud to have contributed to. Kind of like seeing your face for 1 frame in the crowd on TV at a football match and having your own little stamp to show you were there.

Welshy457d ago

Without those original devs, there is no beloved game to remaster and put new names on. Disappointing Nintendo, do the right thing and patch it in.

Metroid Prime Remastered is Great, But a Trilogy Collection Would have Been Better

Players jumping into the series before Metroid Prime 4 releases need access to the entire trilogy on the Switch, not just Metroid Prime Remastered.

Imagine Metroid Prime using UE 5?, thank you Nintendo you are ossummm! :D

badz149459d ago

you want them to melt all the Switch worldwide?

PhillyDillyDee460d ago

Theyre gonna pull some BS, just watch. Im betting 1 and 2 will be sold individually then 3 will be a part of a trilogy pack.

Petebloodyonion460d ago

I don't know why everybody is praising Nintendo for remastering Prime1 when they became silent radio on Prime4.
As much as I can see the game looking better it's still played exactly like the Metroid prime 1 on Gamecube or the Trilogy version that I also own on Wiiu (It's the Wii version but it was made a Wiiu title)

--Onilink--460d ago

Because its a great remaster? And actually reasonably priced against all odds?

I dont need them to be telling me every six months that Prime 4 is still coming. They are developing the game and will show more details when its ready, simple as that.

I have no problems with Nintendo not showing it yet if they still don’t want to

jambola460d ago

it's 40
I've seen better remastered trilogies for roughly the same, hell I've seen collections 5 times bigger for half the price

Petebloodyonion459d ago

and they released the COMPLETE trilogy on Wii-u for 20$
https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

--Onilink--459d ago

@pete

And that was still the Wii version, with literally no WiiU enhancements whatsoever…

I 100% prefer a remaster of the level we got at $40 than just a simple upres port of the trilogy at $60 like it has happened with basically every other Nintendo remaster so far, or even worse for them to release a Wii port for $20 with no enhancements

Not to mention this is clearly part of the work Retro is doing graphically for Prime 4

Tacoboto460d ago

That's not accurate on either part. The Wii U "title" is only just the Wii version - motion controls and 480p only. This version is the first version with dual-stick controls so that alone makes the feel of this different than either version 10 or 20 years ago.

Petebloodyonion459d ago

Yes like I said the Wii u is the Wii version but was billed as a Wiiu game the point it appears straight into the Wii-u Menu and not the Wii one like the Wii game but it is essentially the Wii Trilogy offered at a discount price at the time with remote controls.

PhillyDillyDee460d ago

As much as you can see? Guess you missed the part about modernized controls. I also saw a video that showed off an updated soundtrack.

Petebloodyonion459d ago

Ok they modernized control... update the music basically exactly what they did with the Wii trilogy (that supported motion control-like corruption)
My point isn't that the game is fined tune but the fact that ppl celebrate Nintendo for not delivering something that was a major announcement in 2017.
How would ppl feel if Sony was announcing Uncharted 5 and after 6 years they would release a remaster of the 1st Uncharted or if the upcoming Perfect Dark by MS is ... the remaster of the 1st one so you can still wait.

Heck I can already see the Xbox has no game or can't make a game comment flooding in

And also you know that they didn't made the trilogy so they can release the others game later on.

Neonridr459d ago

and TLOU on PS5 plays exactly the same as it does on PS4. What's your point? A great game deserves to be enjoyed by a larger audience.

Petebloodyonion459d ago (Edited 459d ago )

and the majority of the crowd dissed Sony for basically remastering a Ps4 titles
how many reviews gave it a great score but mentioned that the price was too high?
Heck, go see Angry joe review it's the perfect satire where he basically goes fetch the review of the Ps4 changes some filters, renames the file name to Tlou part 1, and press play.
Also, did NaughtyDog announce Tlou3 Part 5 years ago?

Again my issue isn't that they remaster a great game it's the fact that they are giving a middle finger to fans of the actual trilogy (ppl like me who basically own all previous versions) while saying get ready for parts 2 and 3 before the damn part 4.

And let's be clear if Microsoft would have put that crappy move with a 40$ Remake of Halo1 instead of Infinite
the negative comments would have flooded this thread.
Heck just wonder what would happen if MS release a Perfect Dark remaster instead of the new one?

Tacoboto459d ago

What are you on, Pete?

Halo CE already got remade, in 2011. Then it got re-released again as part of MCC in 2014. It's still getting updated. Nintendo hasn't said anything about remakes of Prime 2 or 3. The only TLOU being officially worked on is Factions and Part 1 PC.

What you're saying here is wrong, your initial post is wrong, and all of your follow ups have been wrong.

but that would be expected to cost less and nintendo doesn't like things costing less
especially when people keep supporting that anyway

Profchaos460d ago

Metroid fans for years: "we want prime remastered."

Metroid fans after getting what they want: "yeah.... It's ok but where's the rest"

Rage77460d ago

Notice that the people bitchin aren't the "Nintendo Fans".
That age old myth of "Crazed, Zealot acting Nintendo fans" is a construct from years of trolling coming from
"opposite camp fans".
Most of the people you see complaining here arent true Nintendo fans, they are low key "imposters" that fake
"concern", because "they care" when in reality you only see praising only what others do but Nintendo in teir eyes can only do wrong...its gotten old and it didnt work against the Switch's success and it probably never will.
In the meantime, i prefer to enjoy stuff instead of being day in and day out "disapointed" in the stuff i dont care about. Would it had been nice to have all 3? Sure, does it make this one less great? Abso-F&^in-lutely NOT. :)

jambola460d ago

Lol
"Not true Nintendo fans" ok

jambola460d ago

It's almost like there are a variety of people on the internet with varying opinions
Crazy

Rage77459d ago

Ah yes, There are in fact many with varied opinions and that in itself is a great thing to have, what is not so great is the people who either try to either force their opinions on to you, or try to guilt you into either feeling bad or dumb for not conforming to their opinion. Or as an alternative those who dont have a valid argument and resort to either belittling others or going for low petty insults to puff their egos online.
I personally care for none of the examples above, but have seen a lot of it happen for many years now.
I stick to being around peeps who enjoy the medium (video games) and dont feel the need to crap over somebody else's enjoyment.
