Project CARS vs. DriveClub: frame rate vs. fidelity

VVV: "Comparing Project CARS to DriveClub seems like a futile exercise. Yes, both fall into the racing genre, but to most gamers the comparisons end there. Project CARS is a thoroughbred simulator, whereas DriveClub, well, isn't, to put it politely. Project CARS features one of the largest real world track rosters to ever grace a racing game, while DriveClub is set entirely in fantasy world tracks. The list goes on.

Both games do have one thing in common, however, and that's their outstanding visuals. Both look suitably sumptuous, and stand among the finest this generation has to offer. However, there is one crucial difference between the two that spawns never-ending debate: DriveClub is locked to 30 fps, whereas Slightly Mad Studios are striving to get Project CARS running at a stable 60fps; a feat that very few current-gen games are accomplishing, and it's even less common with multi-platform releases. It's an age-old debate, perhaps, but one well worth returning to. "

Wasn't Project Cars in development before the PS4 and XBox One were a visible twinkle in their corporate eyes? Long time coming...

NuggetsOfGod3337d ago

I rather both. Dx12 on pc hopefully will makes look even better than driveclub @ 60fps.

Drive club visuals ruin project cars environment for me a little.

It's like divorcing halle berry and marrying a t rex.

Ugh.

I have to remind myself gameplay is all that matters as I fall asleep lol

methegreatone3337d ago

On PC, pCars has advantages over Driveclub.
However, these advantages are only the typical ones that PC gives over console. Things like picture quality, resolution, ultra high res textures, lots of cars, etc etc. Is that going to make a difference ? Ofcourse it will !

However, the fact is the pCars rendering is simply not as advanced as DC. Environments are fine. You know what really is distracting in pCars ? Lighting and reflections. Especially reflections. Unlike in Driveclub, pCars does not have self reflections of a car. In other words, when looking at say, a BAC mono, it looks really odd from many angles, because it doesn't reflect itself.
Another huge inconsistency is that the entire interior reflects the environment, which is good for certain parts. But I'm talking about everything, the entire interior. It really looks ugly when you go over a curb and the inside of the car doors start reflecting a bit of red and white.
Night racing - opponents headlights from behind apply a flat, dull lighting to your ENTIRE interior, with no shadowing. It looks particularly ugly.

Daytime shadows are also way too hard.

Driveclub simply has more advanced lighting and rendering, and it gets many details right, where pCars doesn't.

In certain cases, will pCars end up looking better than DC ? You bet it will.
However, in sooo many situations, you start getting all these inconsistencies, and it looks ugly.

Dee_913337d ago

t rex? I'd say its more like divorcing halle and marrying my current gf.. not as good but I can live with it xD

@methegreatone
Alot of those issues sounds like alpha/beta issues.. which is the current state of the game, so its to be expected.Driveclub had similar lighting issues when it was in its testing stages. if I remember correctly.
These racing games, pcars assetto corsa, drive club are all just holding me over until GT7 comes out really, they are fun and beautiful, but I have a feeling we haven't seen anything until we see Gran Turismo on PS4.

wolf5813337d ago (Edited 3337d ago )

i ll wait to see gt7 at e3 until then back to driveclub...

sprinterboy3337d ago

Console wise dc is awesome compared to pcars but pc ultra setting for pcars do look great.

kstap333337d ago (Edited 3337d ago )

I used to firmly be in the camp that racing needs 60fps. Haven't played Driveclub, but after playing forza horizon 2, I'm convinced 30fps can work just fine with the proper techniques to keep input lag at a minimum. Still prefer 60, but won't automatically shun 30 like I used to.

Moldiver3337d ago (Edited 3337d ago )

Graphically DC is a beast no doubt. Its also an arcade racer so 60FPS is not THAT important (though preferable...burn out and daytona USA were better than most racers and 60FPs was part of that ). My only gripe with DC is the car handling. I hate it.And it stands how bad it is because the game looks close to photo realistic at times yet the handling breaks the immersion for me. But then this is why I prefer my arcade racers to be more..arcady..bright colours. Maybe some over the top, fantasy locations. Arcade racers should not pretend to be "real" imo, if they dont have realistic handling. As I said it breaks immersion. Im supposed to have trouble keeping a 700+ BHP pagani on the road, I am supposed to be cautious. the pagani is that kind of car. Yet in NEVER feels like that in DC..but in Pcars it will, as it does in forza or GT. A racer is judged by its car handling i my books. Much like in real life, when a car is judged by its handling on and off track. To a car enthusiast this stuff matters, even if the average gamer who likes arcade racers doesnt care about the subtle art of suspension tuning.

For a sim 60FPS is mandatory above all else. the physics engines in these games updates rapidy due to the speedy nature of racing. That is already going to test hardware, especially when your game is simulating the same things on every cars on track (suspension, tyres, weight transfer/G-force). 60FPs and the improved controller input response that it brings are important when you are trying to gauge how much grip you have and how the cars weight transfers under breaking.

Good graphics and framerate are preferable but as we have seen time and time again, you cant always have both on console. I accept that. Nothing I can do about it. The hardware in these consoles cant change. And with that said Forza and GT are still two of the finest racers on any platform. PC racers included. Pcars looks to be very much in the same vein as GT and forza..A sim racer that works on consoles. I hope that it turns out to be a good game, because I have beaten all the races in FM5 and need a sim to tied me over till FM6 (and eventually GT7) turn up. For xbox AND ps4 fans this game is the sime you play in btween your forzas and GTs. slightly mad probably know this too. As for me..I got room for all three.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85130d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972130d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim130d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno130d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183129d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Chocoburger130d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai130d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC130d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

Why did EA Kill Project CARS?

This video explains why we think Electronic Arts didn't see a future in the sim racing title Project CARS and promptly cancelled the fourth instalment.

Jin_Sakai557d ago

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox557d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade555d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole554d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow556d ago (Edited 556d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow555d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad555d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist555d ago (Edited 555d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace555d ago (Edited 555d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad554d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim555d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

Original Project CARS creator trying to re-hire EA team

Ian Bell, the founder of Slightly Mad Studios, is aiming to hire former Project CARS employees to work on his upcoming GTR Revival project.

Sgt_Slaughter558d ago

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.
