Nobody seems to understand what it actually is. This does not install anything to the console. It is nothing like what Sony does. It was not designed to decrease load times. This was made for multi disc games and people complaining about the drive being loud. There is no installation, it copies the entire disc to the drive. That way you don't have to hear the drive ever and if it asks you to switch discs you don't need to do it since all the discs are on the HDD. The only bad thing here is that you still must keep the first disc of the game in the drive to ensure that you are the real owner. This is like nothing in the console world yet (except for a modded original xbox), and definitely not like what some Sony games require.

WTF! What about all the millions and millions who own 20 GB HDD or actually 13 GB HDD. If game installs start taking up 3 or 4 gbs on the harddrive then us 20gbs are all screwed and have to upgrade to 60 or 120. 13 gb will only be able to fit about 4 or 5 games max and I plan on owning more then that in the xbox lifetime. On the plus side if the disc doesn't have to spin at all or as much maybe this can definetly eliminate the problem of disc scratching or possibly reduce RROD! Looks like I am buying all the multiplatforms for PS3 now and only exclusives for 360 when the installs hit. These installs are a joke too. So you can EITHER play it from the HDD (that you have to insert a disc anyway) OR play it from the disc. It is still streamlining info from only one source and the only slight improvement that it might get is from faster reads from a HDD.

Why doesn't everyone take off their fanboy hats for a second and REALLY see what's happening (from a stance of a multi console owner).

-Added functionality to completely fill your HDD w/ only a handful of games. Even a 120GB HDD will only hold 20 games and then you don't have any room for DLC, arcade, etc...

-A highly anticipated exclusive just became multi which isn't even an announcement if you already own both consoles. Hell, FF7 remake being a 360 exclusive would have gotten me far more excited than an announcement that a game I have been waiting for is now even further away from my hands.

-A new dashboard and possibly the only thing worthwhile that was announced, the netflix deal. Sounds intriguing, but I think more details still need to be released before I get really excited.

No new titles, no real innovation, just disapointment from a gamer that is sick of the console 'wars' and wish that they would keep focus where it was when they started, a gaming machine. The FF13 announcement makes me want to sell my 360.

no...the PS3's advantage has always been from a development perspective...as in developers can rely on every console having a HDD...streaming off a HDD is much faster than any form of optical disc...

this option for the 360 has no effects other than minor loading time advantages...it doesn't allow more expansive environments, greater levels of customization, etc., that all occur when a developer is able to tailor the game to being used with an HDD...faster loading times?...how about zero loading times (caching in the background to and from an HDD is much more efficient than from optical disc, aside from the fact that you can only pull from ROM in the first place)

Sony hurt the industry last generation by not including an HDD with every PS2 (they had an original sku plan like that of the 360)...last generation though, MS did include an HDD with every Xbox...now its reversed...and I am not saying this in a fanboy sense...pretty much every 360 owner on this site most likely has a HDD attatched to their machine...wouldn't you rather have MS allowing devs to take advantage of that?...until the HDD'less sku is dropped, that will only rarely happen...

this is all well and great...some quick math reveals that @ $179/120gb of HDD space, MS is charging you ~$1.50 USD per gig...figure an average 360 game install would be roughly ~7-8gb...its over 10 dollars every time you want to do this...

considering how loud and ghetto'like the DVD drive can be from a 360, this most likely will be a very usefull feature to some...

also, why not just state that a standard HDD will be included with every 360 sold now?...wouldn't that get rid of the pressure that a lot of devs complain about?...wouldn't that make MS stop recieving the unsightly criticism of removing features from their last console?...this isn't a feature that developers will take advantage of; as long as their are still 360's being sold without HDDs...

First. Will this mean that new games will have partial installs? or that you can just download whole games to your HD, like Gears?

Partial installs still remain faster then whole HD installs. Reason being that if the programmer sets the game up correct it can load from the drive and disk at the same time making it even faster then just the HD alone. Hence Uncharted.

Last I was thinking that this may be a big hole is security. I can already see the 360 bootup disk making it even more easy to pirate games.

How is the HD supposed to not spin? Unless everything is loaded into the ram (impossible) or the game is being read off the game disc (the opposite of what they're describing) the HD has to spin. That's how an HD works. It's like a record only instead of a needle it has a magnetic attachment on the arm that reads data from it as it spins. I don't get how this is supposed to work unless they are releasing a new flash memory based HD for the 360.

There are specific aspects of Sony's hardware that were blatantly copied later on by Microsoft. (HDMI, larger hard drive size, installations, HD Drive...just to name a few)

Microsoft is, in response to Home, releasing their own little social networking thing with the "avatars".

Microsoft loves buying games that were once Sony exclusives.

How can anyone, from either side deny those things? That's fact, and I'm just stating what Microsoft is doing!

Oh and not to mention that the PS2 had a standard optical audio port....and then the 360 suddenly magically appeared with one.

Microsoft thought the standard hard drive was stupid so they ripped it out for the 360...PS3 retained that. (Yeah ok so Sony copied the Xbox's move with that one, putting a standard HDD in all PS3s)

Also, you can't say Microsoft was the first to invent an online gaming community, because community gaming on PC has been around for ages.

Microsoft also copied DVD usage in the original Xbox, PS2 being the pioneer of that. PS2 had an available bay for a hard drive, Microsoft said OOH OOH lets one-up them and make the HDD a standard!

You could hook up the ps2 to ethernet also, and again Microsoft saw an opportunity to take that and run with it, making it a standard on the Xbox.

But of course they fell on their face this time around and made it optional.

As you can see, there are so many things that Microsoft has just taken from around the industry, tweaked a little, and called their own just to seem "original".

Microsoft is too little, too late when it comes to this, and with the added hardware failure issues, made the 360 a complete and total disaster, in my eyes.

The PS3 does installs, but they are mandatory, and that's only so the game can run half decent. I don't really care b/c i put a 160gb in my PS3 but honestly, I REALLY think Sony needs to offer this too now, not just partial installs.

the PC MODEL have hit the Consoles and there is no going back, HDD's have more benefits when it comes to DATA READS and it's here to stay.

Now only if MS didn't funk up with them gimped HDD-less 360's everything would have been good, we'll see how this pans out.

Lost Odyssey? Will I need to buy a freaking 120GB HDD? How about making it an open platform, that would actually work better. Or better yet, just release a 2TB HDD for 360 for a decent price and I am all for it.

Anyway, if that is the agreement that Square Enix reached with Microsoft in order to put FFXIII on 360 then I am all for it since installing it would reduce the fears of it being a gimped game as there would be no need to switch discs.

That would be at least $2000, not even kidding. 360 installs would be a fail with a 20gb hdd. you could put maybe 1 game on it. Plus its not even a full 20gb its 12gb.

Sony is not only experementing with downloading full games at a cheaper price than the disc based version, but also has all the original PS1 games that you can download and run directly from the PS3, and hopefully will allow the same of PS2 games.

And that would be if we could install the game to an external hard drive so those of us that only has the 20gig drive (13gig available after deleting all the "free" junk that comes on it) can install more than just one (1) game. I am sure MS will put some sort of DRM encoding to the ripped DVD so hopefully they will think past selling a tonne of the 120gig hard drives and allow us to use our own external drives connected.

you will still need to have your original disc in the drive to show you have the game, it will just ignor the dvd and run off the hdd.

I can't see this helping very many of the 360's games since they already run smooth and great, but there are a couple (Bioshock and Mass Effect) that come to mind that could realy use installing to a hard drive to just make them more enjoyable (Bioshock) and downright playable (Mass Effect).

I for one will really enjoy this, as I'm sure people with the same problem as me, for some reason when ever I play COD4 I sometimes get disc error...

so having the game install on the drive will not only take away CD spinning noise but also no more reading error... this is really sweet.

Wow I didn't think Microsoft would do a move like this.. This is going to be a really cool feature for the system. I like having stuff on the hard drive, the game will load quicker, making it a sweeter playing experience.

The biggest problem with this is that its going to be really difficult for MS (and developers) to pull off when you think of it.

Not all 360's have a Harddisk, and I can honestly say I've never seen the HD drives for sale in any of the computer stores, MS also have the monopoly of the drives that you can use, where is you can purchase just about any SATA II 2.5" drive and plop it into your PS3.

So does this mean that games could be potentially sold with the requirement that it needs a HDD?

You also have to consider that your still likely going to have games on multiple disk, possibly more now that this has been announced.

Not sure if this good idea on paper but a possible logistics nightmare.

If you don't want to switch DVDs, you copy the DVDs to Hdd. It probably means you will need a lot more space than for PS3 installs...

Not a bad idea. I was wondering why they (as in Microsoft or Sony) hadn't done this earlier. Would be nice to install my old PS2 games, but requiring the original disc is a hassle.
