Project Morpheus for PS4: Check Out Sony's Official Pictures of the New Model & New Demo Screenshots

Sony Computer Entertainment just released lovely pictures of the new Project Morpheus model, and new screenshots of the games.

Brilliant news that it has a release date of half 1 2016. Now it's more than just a concept, it's a real tangible product that will be available to the mass market to buy. Sony have used their time since the GDC reveal last year to do what they did with the PS4, listen to developers, respond to their feedback and improve the specs. I've been dreaming of VR for a long time and I can't wait to use it in my home. Virtual Reality will have a big impact on gaming.

They are planning on this and are in initial talks with Hanes and Fruit of the Loom to include free underwear with VR versions of the game.

Color me excited, especially with sony's prowess in hardware ! I think this is going to turn out great actually. Wasn't really on board with vr at first but the more I think about it, the more I think it could be amazing!

The new htc vive from htc+valve supports 90fps to reduce jitter.

I see this as being better on pc.. why?

This will need real horse power and console well are consoles.

If you ever want high end horse power + dx12/Volkan(glNext) it's now.

Who will compete with sony making vr headsets? Noone.

Who will compete for the vr crown for pc?
Valve+htc, Razer, hololens & oculus rift.
Microsoft with hololens is not vr but still a virtual experience and has been clearly shown it has gaming potential.

Sony vs sony is lame for any market as well as consumers.

Pc is a great place for all new tech.

Open platforms win at innovation.

Plus ps4 might have to do 540p each eye lol. I expect odd resolutions.

I just don't see an apu that has to play games at 30fps and lower to get to 800p, 900p or 1080p running 1080p x 2 plus high frame rate?

Sony either has magic beans or kaz sold his soul to satan for extra power and angelic motion blur.

I just don't see games looking like uncharted at 1080p twice.

Especially as games get graphically more advanced over years.

How will ps4 handle 1080p twice in 2018?

Unless a low level api miracle pill helps them idk how this will happen with high end graphics.
But who knows.

given the ps4 will need to render for 2 separate displays 1080p for some games may be being a little ambitious. However, what is the native display resolution of the screens in the first place?

It is 960 x 1080 each eye. Read the specs, the 1920 x 1080 is total. So it will be like rendering any other 1080p 2D game to the GPU.

Especially if they've minimised the screen-door effect.

Even the Valve headset isn't an optimally high res. We'll have to wait for a couple of years for this stuff to be perfect - 1080p is more than playable tho, I love my (1080p) DK2..

Would be nice if they set up demos with it several weeks or months ahead of launch in stores like Gamestop, Best Buy and other electronic stores so people can try them out.

Will be interesting to see if the whole VR craze takes off. I recall a few years ago 3D was the supposed next big thing yet having to wear glasses put many consumers off. However, if they get the price right and back it up with some rich gaming experiences then it may well succeed.

Question still remains for me is whether or not the PS4 has the horsepower to run VR games without compromising visual quality. And I mean proper games and not EyeToy equivalent games.

VR is not gimmicky like 3D. I know because I own an Oculus rift dk2. Once you try a game with native VR support that runs smoithly, you will see the light. Its like going from shadow puppet entertainment to an hdtv. I'm a fan of morpheus and the rift, and I want VR to be experienced by all.

As much as I root for innovation, I have a feeling this will flop. Not just Morpheus but all general VR's. There has to be that killer app! And it looks like Micrsoft is bringing their A game with minecraft for Hololens

Hololens looks lame for gaming, my living room is a mess, I'd have to clean up every time I played Minecraft (not my idea of fun).
Truth is I don't want to see my surroundings when I game, I'd rather concentrate on a TV screen in the corner than have to see an augmented version of the reality I'm trying to escape.

All of this is irrelevant until we get a price. I cant imagine this sort of technology being cheap, but I don't think they can get away with charging more than the PS4 itself.

Also, does anyone else have concerns with the way it does tracking? The rift uses what I assume is a collection of accelerometers and electronic gyroscopes for tracking. Where morpheus uses 9 led lights. Essentially meaning you can only use it in front of a camera, and if the camera loses sight or orientation of the unit, it will cut out. I probably never would have thought this to be a problem if I didn't have to deal with it for the 3D glasses on my TV. I'm sure the reasoning behind it is to make it more affordable to the consumer, but still, I can see it getting old fast.

Never the less, I will be getting one. Can't wait for a true VR experience.

The DK2 actually has spacial tracking with a load of invisible LEDs and a camera that comes in the box. It also has gyros - the DK1 and the GearVR only have the gyros and no camera and kind of suck as a result. For good spacial tracking you need something to see where you are. :)
