Blenszinski seems to be trying to shake off the whole "bigger, better, more bad-ass" phrase because during their visit to see Epic's design director in Seattle CVG didn't hear it once.

Instead of cheesy PR and marketing hyperbole Blenszinski just sat back and let the game do the talking. But he was more than happy to mull over why Gears' multiplayer wasn't quite what was intended and how its now been fixed. It's all interesting stuff.

DJ, they always say they are pushing the machine to the limit. They could always optimize their code and be able to add even more. I mean inefficiant code will push a machine to the limit, then come up with a better routine and then all of a sudden its doing things twice as fast.

Gears 2 looks great, hands-down. And hopefully other 360 devs can achieve what the team at Epic is doing. But when you start comparing to the high-end PS3 titles…it’s just a whole new playing field. And consumers naturally compare software between different platforms.

At some point in the near future, it’s going to be impossible for exclusive 360 devs to compete with exclusive PS3 devs. It’s not because of a lack of talent; it’s because of the hardware. When your direct competitors have about 3x the horsepower to work with, 5x the storage capacity to build their games with, and the ability to do HDD installations to increase graphical fidelity without increasing load times…what the hell do you do? Simple. You start working on their hardware (PS3) in order to eliminate that hardware advantage and prove how good you really are.

APIs get revised by the console maker... some of these revisions improve memory management and reduce the resources required to perform certain things... also new algorithm and techniques are discovered by developers that help developers do more with less...

and just so you know DJ... if the xbox 360 has any limitation that can prevent games from getting better and better it will be primarily because of Memory/Ram...

The xbox 360 CPU is currently better than most Computers CPUs... the xbox 360 GPU is also better than most PC GPUs... yet the xbox 360 can never run a game like Crysis...

I mean look at the recommended requirements for Crysis:

OS - Windows XP / Vista
Processor - Intel Core 2 DUO @ 2.2GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Memory - 2.0 GB RAM
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS/640 or similar

The xbox 360 beats the Processor and the GPU is somewhat similar in terms of horse power... but falls behind by 1.5 Gigs...

It is common knowledge of gamers... this is being the case for ever... the most important component on any game machines are the the following order:

GPU
Memory
CPU

and you seems to believe (because of your love for the PS3):

Disc Drive
CPU

and completely ignore the fact that you cannot put a 1GB texture on a 512MB machine...

PS2 games didn’t perform/look very good for the first few years because A). All graphics shaders had to be written by hand, B). Programmers had to learn Assembly code to make the machine run properly, C). Programmers had no experience with a streaming system before (everything was processed in small chunks), and D). It was a multi-core system.

Oh, and Sony gave almost no help to developers.

The Xbox 360 CPU within the context of its environment is about as powerful as a Core 2 Duo. Its L2 Cache (chip memory) and Frontside Bus (the only form of communication with system memory and the GPU) both run at half speed, which severely limits what the CPU can do. IBM did this because of heat issues, but Microsoft insisted on a triple core chip because they wanted to have the maximum number of hardware threads. Running the CPU off of GPU memory, which has high latency, didn’t help much either. Unified Memory Architecture saved them money, but cut down on performance.

You keep hating on Dedicated Memory Architecture, and you have no basis for doing so. Running CPU on CPU Memory and the GPU on GPU memory Makes Sense. It’s why PCs and Macs do it. It’s why PS3 does it. Switching that around, as in Microsoft’s case, is stupid. And the 360’s ED-RAM is worthless. If it could handle frames larger than standard definition when doing 4xAA, that’d be fantastic. Microsoft should have made the ED-RAM 32MB, because then they would’ve had free anti-aliasing for 1080p renders. Or even 14 MB for 720p renders. Instead, developers are forced to eat into GPU bandwidth and memory in order to chop the frames up, send them to ED-RAM, and then piece them back together. A lot of devs don’t even use the ED-RAM because they only get 2x anti-aliasing out of it anyway.

Gears of War 2, a third-generation 360 title, still only has 2x anti-aliasing because of the ED-RAM decision by Microsoft.

that there is another article that stems from this one that says "Cliffy loves MGS4." I'm pretty sure that's not what he said. He said they do an amazing job with the long cut scenes but he prefers quick cut scenes that get you right back into the action. I love how people spin other people's words around to help support their views. We already saw that he said he doesn't like "passive entertainment" so how could they then say he loves it? but to address people's 'hardware pushing ability.' he's not saying they aren't pushing it further than anyone has...he's just saying that there's going to be just that little bit more you can squeeze out of it once you tweak your programming tools. they are making big strides from last game to this game and as far as JUST visuals go, the first Gears is the best looking game on any console this generation. i know people will argue metal gear is, but it's really not. metal gear does a lot of blurr effects and has a good draw distance. but in terms of graphics it's up there, but not close to gears.

Technically speaking. And ONLY technically speaking WHAT makes the Unreal engine superior to:

MGS4
Killzone2
Uncharted

Outside of your opinion, I doubt seriously that you can back up what you are saying with Screenshots, videos, or even a technical explination about why Unreals Lighting engine is 100% terrible. Why there is no object motion blur as well as camera motion blur, why there is no way to blend animations, why there is no advanced particle engine, why there is no advanced HDRi lighting, why there is no advanced water shaders as well as deformation, etc. I doubt you have even played MGS4 to come to your conclusion that it is just Blur and draw distance.

Do you have any clue as to how taxing it is for a game engine to render OBJECT MOTION BLUR on top of the level of geometry/shaders/animation/dra wdistance/particles & Camera motion blur? Its not a simple button that you jsut cut on, else you'd see more amazing 360 titles with it. And not just PC and PS3 titles.

Gears is an unreal engine game. I know a ton of xbox fans think that its a good engine, it is not. It can be controlled easily, and there is a TON of documentation. I respect it for what it does for certain developers that use it to help them with a great gaming vision. Others just use it to rehash games over and over to turn a profit.

There is no way on earth, literally. That the Unreal Engine is technically more advanced than the Uncharted Engine, GTA4's engine, MGS4's engine, COD4's engine, Just Causes engine, and the list can go on. Its old and out dated without any of the newer developments that have been made since 2004. As far as the show piece for the Unreal engine goes, it is not Gears Normal Maps of War. Its Bioshock. Which shows developers can use tricks with it to get it looking good, like the water details that Gears1 and Gears2 still lack.

So I am very excited to see how you come to the conclusion, that Gears 1 is a technically superior title to MGS4.

You think uncharted looks good? it's one of the worst looking games i've seen. the character models and animations are all the same. the game has no textures. the only thing that game does well is the lighting. and the only fun moment in that game was the car chase. the explosions were absolutely atrocious, the physics were almost non existent, and the game play was so basic and boring that i could play the game with one hand. and YES, i do own it. cuz people like you made it seem like it was something great, and it's barely even something. a 4 hour game with NOTHING to offer in terms of groundbreaking graphics or game play. and if you think uncharted deserves any credit, put it in the lighting or their ability to recreate, scene by scene, every live action Disney movie i've ever seen. I can't believe you'd even compare the two games, that's sad.

as for metal gear, they use camera tricks, blur effects, etc to make the game look better. also notice there is virtually no color in the game (though i could complain about that in gears as well). they use tricks to make it look better. and don't get me wrong, i think it looks great, and i think the presentation in metal gear is top notch. but in terms of just straight graphics and textures, Gears is leaps and bounds beyond Uncharted and still better than metal gear. as for killzone 2, i can't compare because that game isn't out yet. but in the videos i've seen i think it looks great. but i also think the characters and the environments look like they don't belong together. it's hard to describe but it looks like the people are in an empty room and then they super impose them into the environment later. but that could just be because it's not finished. you can't compare games that aren't out yet.

There, i used my last bubble just for you. I hope i addressed all of your concerns. but i know you are set in your opinion so i don't expect i'll sway it. but nobody can be serious when they say uncharted is a good looking game or even a fun game. it belongs in the last generation and i really regret buying it.

OH! and for the record, i'm not even that big of a fan of gears of war nor do i like that every developer out there is using the unreal engine to make their games, i want more diversity and that's why i like games outta japan, cuz they build their own engines for their games. Condemned 2, for example, is a great looking game (it's made by sega, i think it was made in japan...could be wrong about that one; but they did use their own engine for it).

EDIT: I missed where you mentioned COD engine. umm...that is a last gen engine and they've admitted it. i think the COD games look and play terrible. It's one step above a rail shooter. but that's my opinion too, and people don't like to hear that their garbage game (COD) is crap. though it very much is. but i'd still prefer to play it over Uncharted.

and one more thing. i am NOT an xbox fan. personally i think all 3 systems fell short this generation. I am a gamer. I owned EVERY nintendo including virtual boy and i still refused to get the Wii because i want to play games that make progress. I've owned every playstation and i've had both xboxes. i like games, not systems. the fact that gears is on xbox doesn't make me like xbox more or less. but i think gamers should go where the games are, and so far it really has been the 360 this time around. but i do own both systems and look forward to games on both systems. I don't choose favorites based on the system, unlike most of the people on N4G who will say things like "Uncharted looks amazing." that's such a blind statement. Unreal engine has 1 good thing going for it and its tectures, none of the other engines mentioned by CV. You might dislike uncharted gmeplay to each his own (i felt it was gears + speed), however negating some graphical achievements of that game is like saying Gears graphics were awfull for its time. Uncharted draw distance, water physics and look were benchmark achievements, however the overanimated art style taken by naughty dog did more harm than good since the characters moved too fast or in a nonaplied physics impulse loop but the physics were there and most of your complains seem to be based more on the cup of tea syndrome than factual engine shortcomings.

As for MGS4 again it doesnt have the texturework of Unreal but the shaders, particle effects and physics are vastly more complex and better looking than most engines outthere, mgs4 lies whithin the draw range which is cleverly hidden by buildings or other sort of obstruction (much like gears). The other grapchical shortcoming of the game comes in the oposite side of uncharted animation problem so it makes things look stiffer than they are. Killzones only problem is its texturework but in all other areas it trumps the unreal engine.

Every engine has its pros and cons none is absolutely better than any other the only reason for downplaying unreal so much is its overuse that has made thousands of game that look and feel the same.

The PS3 is a lot better than the 360 in terms of hardware (a lots more powerful and reliable) I agree; but Sony said the PS3 will have a life span of at least 10 years.
Which means that in 2-3 years time, when the new xbox will be out, the PS3 is going to look like a PS2 in comparison.

Well, this is my opinion, Cliffy B can push console limits further than Gears 2 on the Playstation 3, but I don't think that there's much more that he'll be able to get out of the 360 after Gears 2. There will most likely be a little more untapped potential left in the 360 after Gears 2, but there's a lot more you can do with the PS3 in a game than a 360 and that's just plain facts.

all this talk about graphical power and this, at the end of the day gears 2 is going to be a fun game, yh the ps3 has more power in terms of graphics but that will not stop the 360 from compteting with it..i could not care less about all this comparsion about ps3 exlusive vs 360 exlusive. if the game is fun and it appels to me i will by it no matter what console its on..oh wait apart from the WII =D

Well i think gears2 looks fantastic.

PS3 multi platform isn't quite with the 360, but it's very close. Depends how good the port is.

Exclusives look brilliant on ps3. Because they use the spu's.

I'd like to see gears on PS3. But i doubt it'll ever happen.

And you guys with 360's, rrod is so easy to fix, it's comical. Replacing the drive is a doodle.

Do what my m8 is doing atm. Modding the 360. adding fans, heatsink on ram. once u cool it down. u no longer have the problem, also if your drive is not always loading games, the eye is dirty and must be cleaned.

Gears 1 was good, and 2 will be great also. MGS4 was good, I still play it every now and then, graphically it looks amazing, but I just dont really think its polished, it looks good, but not great. Will Gears ever come to tha Playstation? No, I really dont think so, so for everyone saying that he hints at working on a different console to get more power... youre wrong! To me, MGS4 and Gears are both GREAT looking games, gears to me just has much better gameplay.... but to be honest, I think CoD4 looks better than both of those titles! Its polished and runs so smooth, it actually set the bar for graphics in a videogame.... so just ponder that thought.

I think we are all starting to get tired of the console war BS. Its just been a little fun to stick it to 360 fans who keep on/kept on spouting things like: PS3 has no games!! $600 foreman grill! Fony fans! etc. etc.

Fact is I would love to see Gears franchise on PS3, but it wouldnt be out for a very long time if ever SO.. if MS announces a new slim, QUIET 360 for cheap (arcade prices)I might just have to get it to play Gears 2 come november.

I think it is easily conceivable that 360 is reaching its limit SOONER than PS3, given that its been out for double the time, which without a doubt is a factor. Also, from developer comments it seems that coding for 360 is very much like a PC, so devs would likely be better equipped at maxing out the hardware versus PS3, which is notoriously difficult: They can just jump straight in with a lot of the tools they already know for 360 wheras for PS3 they gotta think about multiple SPE's etc. (and doesnt 360 even use DirectX?)
And judging solely from videos there doesnt seem to be very much difference between Gears 1 +2 (both look very good). so it doesnt seem to me to be bad to assume that they have started to hit a ceiling on 360.

On the other hand we have devs like Insomniac stating they were barely maxing out the PS3 for games like Ratchet which Im sorry looks Amazing.. Very, very smooth, great animation and effects, about a Billion things going on at once, HUGE worlds, TONS of Weapons. Even if you think its Pixar-ish (a good thing IMO) and aimed at a universal audience, it is an awesome game to behold and control. SO what can we expect for the future? Big things. Uncharted 2 is gonna be off the charts, not sure bout the story but the graphics will be immense.

Far as MGS4, Every reviewer has hailed it as a technical masterpiece, including reviewers who didnt like it that much like Eurogamer, so I dont think theres any point denying it.

In fact if you consider length of time on the market, and the vast differences between the 360 and PS3 hardware, and how much more complex it apparently is to code for PS3, it just shows how powerful the PS3 is to be able to get games like Burnout, COD4 to look as good as on 360, when the devs dont really know what theyre doing (so to speak!). Its gotta only be working at like 60% max, in terms of optimisation and total resources, and thats on the best ports..

It all comes down to several things.
1.) As long as developers keep making new engines and expanding on the ones they use now expect to see dramatic improvements when it comes to games.
2.) Format space the more space you have the more you can apply to making a bigger more realistic game.
3.) What console can handle more and as the opportunity to improve can lead to better games in the long run.
Funny this all sounds like the PS3.
