Mobile vs. Portable Gaming and the Future

The common sense is that mobile gaming is what we see on smartphones and tablets while portable gaming is what we see on dedicated gaming devices like the 3DS, Gameboy, Vita and our beloved PSP; but it actually goes a lot deeper.

The way 3DS, or Vita, or any other portable gaming console can defeat mobile is to attack the two areas where mobile is strongest, 1st, and most importantly, is to make it a social experience. Nintendo had a brilliant marketing plan for Smash Bros. on 3DS. The slogan was "Settle it in Smash", meaning settle the battle of who's best between your friends and family inside the game. As a result, in just a couple months, Smash Bros. 3DS has sold around 2 million copies in the US, as well as a ton of systems. You need that social aspect, ways that kids can compete with their friends and people around the world.

Then, 3DS and Vita need to develop a lot of free-to-play games with their iconic 1st Party characters that are easy to access online. These are not meant to replace the fully featured adventure games that make portable consoles great. But the new function for handheld devices is to be taken with you everywhere, every second. Fully featured adventure games are best experienced when you've got time to sit down and let yourself get absorbed. Sometimes kids just want to pick up their system and endlessly run and eat eggs with Yoshi or visit Peach's nail salon, or any other of a wide range of free-to-play games that they can download without a parent's help.

I lost my drive for collecting physical games due to many discs lacking the whole complete game. Instead, of collecting games I started collected figurines.

I am a collector have a room dedicated with a couple original arcade cabinets, physical game library, old and new consoles and controllers backlit with LED lighting. It’s very cool to have but with emulation being so strong and prevalent, I sometimes feel foolish because the hobby is expensive and like another said, the full game is not always on the disc. Could probably spend more wisely but I enjoy it.

Most games are usually on disc still. Of course you got you publishers that are hit and miss, Activision, ubisoft, ea, Microsoft, where the rest of the game needs downloaded.
