Why don't today's kids love Sonic?

If you're a video game fan born sometime between 1970 and the early 1990s, there's a fair chance you played Sonic games when you were a kid or a young adult.

Sonic was a 1990s superstar, an icon in an age of rapid progress and speed.

But today's kids couldn't give a stuff about Sega's most famous mascot, as evidenced by the company's most recent financial results, announced earlier today. Sonic Boom for 3DS and Wii U sold fewer than half a million units, combined.

DarkOcelet3398d ago

Today's kids and adult fans of Sonic hate him right now because his games suck. Poor guy. He and Spyro are being handled improperly. Sonic games in the past were damn amazing.

FriedGoat3398d ago

Isn't spyro part of skylanders? I thought that was selling like hotcakes to the kids.

Sonic really does suck these days though.

DarkOcelet3398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

So does Spyro my friend. He is now a former shell of himself. Sales doesnt mean the game is good.

OrangePowerz3398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

I don't think of the kids would know that Spyro had his own games before. He is a side character now. I actually enjoy the games, but it's not about Spyro.

Get sonic away from Nintendo and things can start to get better. It almost seems like sonic is exclusive to Nintendo platforms. They need to sit and plan proper sonic games and make it high production value and release it on the new generation consoles.

Reibooi3398d ago

Kinda makes me sad. I mean Sega have come close over the years to making a good Sonic game and instead of taking what they get in feedback they just throw out everything and start over and the result is crap.

I mean Generations is a good example. The game certainly had it's problems but it was pretty good. Instead of building on that and fixing the mistakes they just threw the entire concept out the window.

Makes me sad.

Metallox3398d ago

@Cindy-rella

Remember Sonic 06? That was a horrible PS3/360 game.

Remember Sonic Colors? That was a decent Wii game.

The fact is, it doesn't matter what are the platforms where Sonic is, is Sonic Team who needs to get better.

XisThatKid3397d ago

Because Sonic can't stay out of some bad games. I'm also just ganna come out and say it.....Sonic is better off without Nintendo. The novelty is gone just do you Sonic....just do you...

I've never liked sonic, and I was born in '88. It's more against Platformers in general, just not my thing. I was more of an MK guy in the 2d era and never played games much until I discovered ps1 and FF7, RE and MGS1

shaw983398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

Because many of his games nowadays suck. This new generation won't like sonic because there are no good games for them to look back on. If sonic does not start putting out good games constantly then his fanbase will die off. For Mario, the kids of the older generation had Mario bros 3, the new generation has the galaxy games and 3d world which are amazing games. What does sonic have that will bring in new fans?

PygmelionHunter3398d ago

Because of no more chili dog jokes... What?! I liked those!

On a serious note, it shouldn't even be a question, there's too many good games out there for all ages that justify a child's fondness or dedication to them. Recent Sonic games are not within those. Besides, he doesn't seem to have as much of an "attitude" nowadays... I think that's part of the charm that got other generations into Sonic games.

rawrock3398d ago

The only Sonic game I really enjoyed was Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast, that was a fun game...

yewles13398d ago

"Why can't Sega recapture Sonic's old magic?" should be the question.

Top 10 Worst Sonic Games

Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "I’m a huge fan of the series and love to talk about its best games… but its hard to argue that it’s all been great for the blue blur. From games that were loaded with glitches, slow-paced gameplay, and visuals that look more like a blue blur of… pixels and polygons. So, take this as a warning to avoid these 10 worst Sonic games of all time."

Never played any of these on this list, surprised Sonic R isn't there, but then i played that on my first PC and didn't think it was that bad, got some mild enjoyment out of it at least.

-Hermit-1001d ago

Lost World, Black Knight, Forces and Chronicles should not be on that list, I can easily think of worse.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Eraser, Sonic R, these are all way worse than the games on this list. Knuckles Chaotix was terrible as well, I hated the way you had to control the players, it was a pain in the ass. Even games like Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball and Rivals 1 and 2 which I thought were decent were worse than some of the games on this list.

To be brutally honest, most of the Game Gear and Master System Sonic games are pretty awful too. Sonic Chaos on the Game Gear for example, you can't even see what you are doing because the field of view is so bad.

I would rather play Sonic 06 than any of the games I listed above, and that game is classed as the worst Sonic game of the lot.

People have nostalgia glasses on when they think about old 2D Sonic games. Outside of the mainline games on the Mega Drive, most of them were worse than the modern day 3D games.

Rebel_Scum1000d ago

Sonic 1 & 2 on the MS2 and GG were great games. Perfect blend of speed, secrets and challenge.

Sonic Chaos was shite. Too easy and gross looking sprites and backgrounds.

imo 1-10 for worst Sonic games would just be all the 3D one's and Sonic Fighters.

lellkay1000d ago (Edited 1000d ago )

There is definitely some worse games than Lost World,

The guy who wrote this definitely didn't dig enough into the franchise history haha

Pyrofire951000d ago

General question.
Is your favorite Sonic game the first one you played?
If not, is you favorite the same style as your first? (3D, 2D, some other distinction?)

lellkay1000d ago

My favorite game is not the first one I played. (First one I played was Sonic The Hedgehog on Megadrive/Genesis)

My favorite one is probably 3&K or Mania, so yes it is in the same style as the first game I played.

-Hermit-1000d ago

My favourite Sonic game is not the first one I played or same style.

The first Sonic game I played was Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive, my favourite is Sonic Adventure 2.

DFresh1000d ago

I disagree with Sonic Forces on that list but the others are correct.
Sonic Forces is hella under rated.

Article says it's about third party Wii U games, yet Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival & Pokemon Rumble U are on this list.

lptmg2453d ago

maybe they were made by third parties? I dunno much about those games

PhoenixUp2453d ago

Doesn't matter who they were made by, they're still first party titles

lptmg2453d ago

one of the worst Wii U games I've ever played was Deus Ex. It's not by any means a terrible game, but the Wii U port was a massive disappointment with a weird control scheme and an abysmal framerate of like 20fps at best.

derkasan2453d ago

It's crazy how hard Devil's Third tanked. Don't think Itagaki's going to really recover from that one.
