Being named IGN's Sports Game of the Year is tough for a series. It puts a lot of pressure on the next title to live up to its now celebrated name. To do that developers must think of new ideas that push gameplay beyond something that was considered to be at the top of its class. Such is the case with NHL 09, a hockey title that must surpass a game that saw a complete redesign to its more than ten-year old shooting mechanic as well as a host of other series-changing features. Judging from IGN's limited hands-on time, it appears that it's well on the way to living up to heightened expectations. More after the jump...
Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "With all this hockey hype in the air, we figured, what better time to look back at the best hockey video games to ever hit the ice."

Mark from GamersFTW asks what's the worst experience you've had playing video games?
Brings back memories of uni days :) Did once punch a wall I got so frustrated. Was either that or destroy a controller. Fortunately I didn't break anything, but unfortunately it was a solid brick wall and my knuckles hurt like s*** afterwards!
Everyone has felt a little bit furious when they were hit by a blue shell in Mario Kart.
Never injured myself but I do remember crying once because the video game character wouldnt do what I wanted it too... Arrrgghhh the frustration!
I actually threw a controller at my brother once for constantly button bashing and not giving me a chance to fight back during a Tekken match. God I was such a bad loser.
Mario Kart is a big culprit. Never thrown anything in anger, but caused massive arguments between my best friend and I. I also hurt myself spinning around on a computer chair in victory and falling backwards.
Natalya in Goldeneye I never wanted to hurt someone so much.
And for pure, unbridled fury... CALL OF DUTY being verbally abused by 11 year olds is not my idea of gaming bliss.
am not a fan of sports. Growing up as a “hardcore” gamer, sports never really appealed to me, especially watching them. While I understand the rules and regulations of a large majority of sports, they just don’t have the same draw to me as they do to others. Why would I freak out about the achievements of other people? So when it comes to playing a game based on activities that I don’t really watch? No thank you. Why write an article about a sports game that is five years old? Because, this small game has lead to me to becoming a screaming fanatic, if only for a short while.
I hope they'll change the resolution... The 08 was terribly bad on my HDTV. Looked like 480p or something like that.
This game is going to be so awesome. Wonder what that new online game mode will be. Maybe something to do with your own player. An online league where you play your own player or something like that.
i still get 2k over EA, but they have been improving.
i wonder if EA will ever buy the nhl rights?
i hope not
