Oculus Creator: Sony ‘doing a good job’ with Project Morpheus

VRFocus- Since its reveal in March 2014 Sony Computer Entertainment's (SCE) Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 has shared a friendly relationship with the Oculus Rift VR HMD for PC. The companies behind the two kits have been largely eager to demonstrate a sense of cooperation over competition. That hasn't always been the case; Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has expressed concerns over Project Morpheus before, but now it seems as if the Oculus Rift creator is feeling a lot more positive about SCE's device.

It is important that VR makes a good first impression and it's great to see that the developers of oculus and Morpheusa are aware, understand and are working towards solving any issues.

I want VR to succeed, these are the first early steps into VR let them be good ones because realising the future potential of VR will depend on it.

I used oculus rift at Florida Supercon and it was amazing. I got crazy motion sickness though. I'm looking forward to these releasing.

Enigma that is my biggest concern, I am already not that great with motion sickness, IF VR doesn't solve the problem or at least limit it's affects, my dream of entering another world might fail before it starts.

It might not be an issue in the long run. I had the same problem when I first played mario 64 back in 96. I was my first time playing a 3d game like that. I fell these vr devices will just take some getting used to.

I got motion sickness to begin with but worked through it over a few days.. That might not be the same for everyone but definitely don't give up if your initial experiences are woozy.

Dev kit 2 of occulous rift pretty much got rid of the motion sickness.

I tried project Morpheus at psx and it was amazing!!!!!

Thing that a lot of ppl r not talking about, is that I and many almost everybody that has tritried project Morpheus did not get motion sickness!!

Sony has an amazing headset and I will be pre ordering it the second it is available.

They were careful only to demo certain types of games though.. The worst motion sickness I've got from my Dk2 was Halflife2.. I'm sure there are games they could display on it which would make people feel weird. :D

Just curious if you could see the edge of the screens when moving your eyes or out of the corner of your eyes when looking straight. I have yet to see the Rift and very excited for it.

When I played it I didn't see the edges. It's like you're in a big room. You won't know how good it is until you use it.

Yeah. You need a tremendous amount of resources that, sadly, are not possible to run that kind of performance on today's machines. It's a starting point years after VR on the Genesis and Super Nintendo (Mostly on Genesis) but will have to expand to the PS5 or PS6 for faster consoles with more resources.

The moral of the story has been that you just don't turn Sony down, or moreso, stab them in the back.

Go back a few years to when Sony was actually working with Nintendo. Sony developed their sound chip thusly angering SEGA a bit. Then Sony says: "Hey, Phillips are working with Toshiba on this new thing called a Compact-Disc. How about we use that and co-colaberate on a new console together. What do you think?" And Nintendo agreed. Not long after at an event, Sony announces a partnership with Nintendo on a CD based console and what does Nintendo do? They leave Sony at the alter.

Long story made short, Sony is furious, enters the game market with the PlayStation, which is what the colaborative project would have been called but, Sony kept PlayStation and Nintendo had the cartridge based console N64, afraid more of piracy. Guess what? Sony buries Nintendo not just once, but twice In a row destroying the Gamecube, and today, the PS4 has a strong hold on the Wii U. Sony says plenty of nice things about Nintendo through Yoshida, but Nintendo are still so arrogant and can't seem to give positive credit where credit is due. Instead, it's just sarcasm. But Sony presses on hoping to humble Nintendo as has happened with the completely untrusted Microsoft with the Xbox One.

Well, Sony approached Oculus. Yup. They approached Oculus and said: "How would you feel about working for us and making the Rift a part of the PlayStation family. Oculus told Sony "No". Remember, Sony won't take NO for an answer. Thusly, we have Project Morphious. Can it challenge Sony? It can try. Can it win? Well... They have a head start in the wild already and Sony are pacing themselves but, Microsoft are coming along soon. "OH YEAH! We've been working on VR too! Yeah! For a long time. Once we could get our hands on a beta kit from Oculus we had an employee buy, we dissected that thing to see how they did it to save on R&D and we're claiming we've been working on it for 5 years now. Well, we've been working on waiting for Oculus to release there's so we could take it apart and steal the idea".

No. This day, if Sony approaches you and asks you to work on something, you don't leave em high and dry. Oculus at least has the brains, so far, to tread lightly and not awaken a sleeping giant. Oh yes.

Oculus and Morpheus will appease two completely different audiences. We know where Sony are heading with their unit, but since Farcebook acquired Oculus its pretty much up in the air.

Oculus is committed to releasing new revisions to keep up to date with hardware improvements. There's NO way Sony, with a one-shot device are going to compete with that on a technical level.

Sony aren't magicians, they don't have some amazing VR secret sauce, hence the prototype being no better than the DK2 - which has already been surpassed by the latest OR prototypes.

Seriously, Morpheus will be great but it's not going to be earth shattering. They have a friendly relationship with the Oculus guys too. Of course Oculus didn't want to be tied to a single hardware platform.

the lack of updates regarding morpheus is concerning. suggests that they aren't yet confident enough in their product. I think the problem they will experience is the limited hardware. we have seen the requirements for pc games using oculus to be very high due the extra resource requirements. much higher than the ps4 spec

I hope Microsoft goes with AR and not VR. AR makes much more sense in enhancing a gaming experience instead of completely changing how you play.
