Lords of the Fallen Is Better Than Dark Souls 2; Sorry, Fanboys

NoobFeed writes: "Game of the Year lists have rolled in and a fair few will have likely mentioned Dark Souls 2 in some sense. It is an easy top ten participant after all. Yet, Lords of the Fallen won’t be given the same credit, despite it essentially being a clone of the former. There’s a reason for that."

Lords of the fallen is my game of the year.

theshonen88993404d ago (Edited 3404d ago )

The author clearly doesn't get the point of the Souls series.

There is a subtlety to the Souls lore that makes it different from most games. Games like Diablo 2 that don't repeatedly hammer in the story via canned voice acting but rely on environments and atmosphere to show depth and detail. Dark Souls doesn't tell you who you are or what to know, you need to go out and discover it yourself.

mechlord3404d ago

@theshonen8899

Well, the story thing is just one part of it all.
What the OP said is actually true. The game doesn't tell you nothing and what you say proves that. Not saying nothing is very different from hand holding.

I feel DaSo 1/2 are unoriginal, don't improve much over DeSo, which is bad.
Lords of the fallen has its troubles but it actually adds something: now not only we die a lot, but we can manage it and use to a better advantage.

Now, i love the soul series, Demon's still is the best for me, but i can see these little nuances that make Lords Of the Fallen better than DaSo 2 (IMFHO)

joab7773405d ago

No offense and disrespect but the author just doesn't like or understand the souls formula. That doesn't make it a worse game. It makes it different than most other games, and why so many like myself love them.

It isn't needless death (most the time). You learn, you get better, you conquer. To be honest DS2 main campaign was too easy I thought. To be honest, they are all very manageable if you put in the time...and I'm no video game extrordinaire.

And I love the lack of info etc. There is much to learn and tons of lore but it's learned within the community. This is one of my favorite things about it.

doritos3405d ago

That's one thing I hate about the souls and destiny, you have to go to websites to learn anything. Should be in the game, period.

LAWSON723405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@Doritos

In other words if I don't like the way DkS2 tells it's lore, it is wrong and needs to be corrected.

You don't understand DkS just don't talk about it. This guy tells why he likes, and he has a great point. Imagination is the limit and creative people help make others picture the cryptic DkS world differently. It is it's charm, not some problem that ruins the game. Just play something else.

Dhampir3405d ago

Everything is in the game. Only reason you would have to go outside the game is if you need someone to explain it to you. Dark/Demon souls tells it's story more like a painting, with clues thrown in item descriptions.

Big_Game_Hunters3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

No one is talking about the story, they are talking about lack of information. as the author states people think not giving appropriate information makes the game hard, but in fact it just makes the game tedious. That is 70% of dark souls "difficulty" ,tedious artificial difficulty. I mean seriously no pause option even offline, that has to be one of the dumbest attempts to make a game difficult ive ever seen.

I want a game that is difficult because every enemy encounter is a challenge, not one that starves you of healing items and checkpoints in between. Good difficulty is good level design, dark souls "difficulty" is don't tell you where to go even though there is nothing truly difficult about the level design. I still like the souls games but their difficulty is greatly exagerated.

now does this make LOTF better? idk ive never played LOTF.

pompous3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Hey doritos, that's how games used to be, you find the lore and stuff through exploration, not this hand holding, incompetent gamer syndrome these new games have. Games should be about figuring stuff out on your own still, but I honestly think these newer gamers don't have the mental capacity nor the iq to handle games like that anymore since they get spoon feed from virtually everywhere in life.

DragonKnight3405d ago

LOTF absolutely sucks in comparison to any of the Souls games. It's clunky, slow, and with far more cheap deaths than can be counted.

Dark Souls 2 may not be the best in the series, but it eclipses LOTF in every way. But hey, if you need a game to hold your hand because you can't figure things out through the ancient and now seemingly forgotten practice known as Trial and Error, then LOTF is the perfect game for delicate flowers to play.

spacedelete3404d ago

troll bait article is troll bait. why even have the word fanboy in a article's title ? this is why gaming is seen as a childish hobby with people like that calling other people fanboys.

Although ive yet to play LOTF, the article is an excellent criticism to the souls franchise. everything mentioned was on point.

DragonKnight3405d ago

No it wasn't. This was an article written by a person who needs their hand held, who probably couldn't get passed the first boss, and is whining because he sucks. Saying "Prepare to Die" isn't an "anti-player" sentiment designed to keep people from playing the game, it's the motto of the game and the base element of the story. You HAVE to die because that's part of what's wrong with the whole game world.

This article is written by a terrible player who glosses over LOTF's worst flaws like absolutely atrocious hitboxes, weapons slower than a sloth, clunky controls, etc...

Nothing this guy said was on point, and bitching about the lack of Pause? Really? QQ

Big_Game_Hunters3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@Dragon knight
and there you go reinforcing the stereotype mentioned in the article. Anyone with a valid complaint of the souls series gets shot down by over defensive people saying things like"he probably hasn't beaten the first boss" "he wants landholding".

having an option to go to the bathroom during gameplay is "hand holding"? unless your game is some kind of maze puzzle game, there is nothing wrong with being told where to go. Sorry if i prefer actual hard game play over over being lost in awful level design.

I like the souls games, they aren't bad games. But too many people hype them up to be the most difficult game on the planet. Here is the truth of it for me. I don't play single player games for difficulty. I do enjoy and prefer a fun challenge and trophy hunting/unlocking extras ect, but no game will ever challenge me like a good match of SC2 or DOTA2, or even Smash bros online. Its hard to take all this "prepare to die" nonsense seriously when the real challenges are online vs people who aren't on a pattern, who aren't coded and predictable. I know DaS has pvp we both know that isn't what people are referring to when they say how "hard" the game is.

Also like i said, i haven't played LOTF so understand when i say his points are good i only mean his criticism of DaS not his accusation of LOTF being better.

"and there you go reinforcing the stereotype mentioned in the article. Anyone with a valid complaint of the souls series gets shot down by over defensive people saying things like"he probably hasn't beaten the first boss" "he wants landholding"

There are no valid arguments in the article at all.

"having an option to go to the bathroom during gameplay is "hand holding"? unless your game is some kind of maze puzzle game, there is nothing wrong with being told where to go. Sorry if i prefer actual hard game play over over being lost in awful level design. "

Right, because there are no places in the game where you can rest and then go to the bathroom in real life. Oh wait, the game has a plethora of bonfires. Gee, it must be so hard to use a homeward bone isn't it? Being told where to go is for people who can't figure anything out for themselves. Dark Souls 2 is a semi-open world game, meaning there is no "correct" path to take. You go where you want to go and the areas themselves are fairly linear. Needing so much help is a sign that you suck at the game, that's just a fact. It's also a sign that you've never played games before they were immensely casualized. I mean there is only 1 place in all of Dark Souls 2 where you'd have an excuse, and that's The Gutter. And if you think Dark Souls 2 is "hard" because of getting lost in the levels, then you're really terrible at games.

"I like the souls games, they aren't bad games. I know DaS has pvp we both know that isn't what people are referring to when they say how "hard" the game is."

So because you play single player games to have the game tell you where to go and how to play, Dark Souls is a "bad" and "overhyped" game because... why? You just said the game is hard and the same time not hard and then you try to remove the PvP from the series to further b**** about the nothing issues you have with the game. "Oh I like a challenge so I play online, but I don't play online in Dark Souls 2 so the game is hard because I don't know where to go." That's just pitiful.

"Also like i said, i haven't played LOTF so understand when i say his points are good i only mean his criticism of DaS not his accusation of LOTF being better."

Never mentioned anything about your opinion of his opinion on LOTF. His opinion on Dark Souls 2 is that of someone who can't play the game well and wants to cry about it. It's painfully obvious given his reasons for why the game is bad. There are much more legitimate and actual reasons why DkS2 is "bad" and none of them are in his article.

I liked Lords of the Fallen. A lot! But I can't give it higher praise than Dark Souls 2. It was incredibly short, way too easy, and doesn't have that lonely and melancholy feel to the world that Souls has..

If I wanted an easier and prettier version of Dark Souls this game is it. Its fun, easier, MUCH better looking, and has a more detailed story without having to look for clues to backstory.

I guess I could see why some people would prefer it. But for me Souls wins hands down.

TheXgamerLive3405d ago

I agree it's better while i disagree with the comparison. Similarities yes but 2 different games.

Back-to-Back3404d ago

Why does the author say sorry Sony fanboys, when the game is multiplat. Looks like a typical click bate trash website

stone cold voice what! ds2 got better review by sites and by gamers

Roccetarius3405d ago

As much as people want to defend Dark Souls 2, it does feel like an arcade version of Souls games. It's a bad mix of Demon Souls and Dark Souls, throwing out proper level design that Dark Souls did. Not to mention it has cheaper moments than previous games.

Lords of the Fallen is not a shining example either. I don't think the story was that entertaining, nor the slow feel to the game.

sin72793405d ago

is not sorry journalist fanboys!

Hellsvacancy3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Well, it'd decided then, just based on this one opinion, may we never discuss this topic again

"As it is written, so shall it be done"

I've not actually played Lords Of The Fallen yet, and as Dark Souls 2 is easily the lesser game in the Souls series I don't personally think DS2 is hard to trump
