Discounts on Major Xbox One Games Shows Microsoft Means Business

Hardcore Gamer: Microsoft is making sure consumers are buying games on Xbox One.

Consumers are creatures of savings and some of these deals Microsoft are offering are incredible. It worries me a bit that Xbox One will overtake the PS4 during Christmas simply because the brand is now cheaper.

Razuel3439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

I spent the week with an Xbox One, and honestly I was disappointed. The UI, and Store was awful. The only game we really enjoyed was Halo, but I will admit that Microsoft is destroying the PS4 in discounts at retailers, especially those online.

If they keep it up, they will catch up. $400 was not a sweet spot, it was more like $300-350.

badboyz093439d ago

So what if they catch up? They are losing Millions!

Svinya3439d ago

Badboyz - no they arent. They make a lot of revenue on games and subscriptions over the lifetime of each console. Discounting them a little more up front doesn't change that.

BitbyDeath3439d ago

UI will be overhauled early next year.

Arnon3439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

Good on Microsoft for competing heavily.

However, I'm still confused. Do those who state their beliefs that the XBOX One will catch up think that the PlayStation 4 no longer exists? It seems the logic being derived from such a statement only serves Microsoft if the XBOX One was in a vacuum with no competition, that is, the PlayStation 4 suddenly disappears for its sales to halt and allow the XBOX One to catch up.

And yet, it seems ignorant to state such a thing because the PlayStation 4 is in a far greater position to widen the gap, especially when they've hardly tried to create such a gap to begin with. Price cuts, bundles and exclusives (which we know will garner a lot of public attention) are still *heavily* inbound on Sony's side, while Microsoft has already performed all three of these things with heavy intention, and have only met succession with a single month towards its competition.

TheMeatPuppet0073439d ago

Upfront yes they are losing money, but as stated in a previous article, Microsoft are in it for the "marathon win" not the "sprint". Yes, they are playing a bit of early damage control by significantly having to drop the hardware price, but it had to be done to prevent a landslide loss to Sony. But remember, for every console Microsoft puts into a home, that equals an average of $1000 in revenue over the console's lifetime. Anything, and I mean anything they can do early on to put their console in your home helps them significantly in the future!

VINNIEPAZ3439d ago

" It worries me a bit that Xbox One will overtake the PS4 during Christmas simply because the brand is now cheaper"

I HATE these gamers with idiot ideas. WHY does it even matter to you, youre a complete moron for even caring so much. Play the games and STFU. We are supposed to be having fun, not competing.

End Rant lol

lfc_4eva3439d ago

No you weren't disappointed.

The xbox online and UI experience have always been high quality.
The best thing about MS is their ability to make changes to their systems and quickly too.

uptownsoul3439d ago

How long till the Xbox One hits the sweet spot of $249? 2months? 3? That's when I'll be picking one up

quenomamen3439d ago

Should of been the price at launch,

BenqMagician3439d ago

I own both consoles ps4 & x1 and the os for the ps4 is really simple and easy. But the x1 is in contrast too the ps4 os really complicated(it looks like the x1 os is using a lot more resources and I think the use of tiles makes it a better os. Also the ps4 os looks like a upgraded version of the ps3 that no a bad thing it just means it's simple too use.)

Death3438d ago

@Arnon,

If the Xbox One and PS4 were separated by a million units in North America prior to November and the Xbox One sold 400,000 more consoles in November, what would you call that? There are territories the Xbox One could catch up in. Globally it's another story.

UKmilitia3438d ago

how can they bundle £200-250 worth of games and pheperials to a console thats being sold for £349 in UK and make enough money to make shareholders happy?

Arnon3438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

@Death

I would call that an achievement. However, such a thing was met due to a heavy attempt at attaining it (Sony, on the other hand, has done virtually nothing to be in the position they're in). Microsoft isn't particularly in a position to continue dropping the price, releasing bundles and offering heavily discounted deals through specific retailers. At least, not if they want this generation to be lucrative for both themselves and shareholders.

They're also creating an image that the Xbox One will continue to have this sort of pricing and packaging, which it certainly cannot hold, and will stir an odd image in the consumer's eye as to whether or not they should buy it now, buy it later or not buy it at all when the bundles and discounts disappear, and the price fluctuates up and down.

Griever3438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

The discounts only show that Microsoft is very desperate. They are dumping the Xbox One and are actually paying the customers to "buy" their console. They are just throwing money at the customers and they are gladly taking it.

blockcoc3438d ago

@VINNIEPAZ You clearly care a lot to even bother to comment on it. Why does their opinion even matter to you?

Shut down with your own logic.

LonDonE3438d ago

Lmao! U realise for ms to even come close to the PS4 total number of units sold they would have to consistantly sell numbers close to what they achieved in november through out 2015! No way is that happening! ms only sold well over november because of the insane bundles and price cuts! In the uk they had 5 free games bundles, which if do the math, it shows they were pretty much giving the console away for peanuts! Sony knows they dont need to do anything since the PS4 is still selling like hot cakes. Sony still out sold the X1 world wide even the insane X1 bundles and price cuts, PS4 has consistantly outsold the X1 in 2014 for every month! somtimes at a 2 to 1 ratio or more! Even in november they still sold very well, hence double the install base!

Muzikguy3438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

@Arnon
I like your thinking and completely agree with everything your posts are saying. I also believe that all this price gouging is hurting MS because nobody will buy it now when the price goes up. They'll just wait for more bundles. Everyone says the life of the console they make their money back and more BUT how are they when the games and services are getting discounts too? It's crazy how much they're discounting just to get systems out there. To me it doesn't show much confidence in your product. I guess we will see

i,m just glad to see that they are being a lot more competitive now.more of my friends have bought S0, Halo MCC and FH2 within the past 3weeks. great prices all around.

nitus103438d ago

Sure Microsoft have effectively purchased their November win in the US but the game bundles they have basically given away mean they will have to come up with "must-have" games over the course of life of the console that will entice those buyers to make more purchases.

Reducing the console is one thing and can usually be made up with two or three full price purchases but when you basically give away 5 to 7 AAA or very well received games as well then it may take sometime if ever to recoup the loss.

What Microsoft has done is a reasonable business gamble but it is a gamble that cannot continue for long before their shareholders start to get jumpy.

BattleAxe3439d ago

@ Valkilmer

Xbox wont take the holidays just because they are cheaper. Xbox One actually has games that people want to play.....true story. Titanfall, Dead Rising 3, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Forza 5, and The Master Chief Collection are all playing a huge role for Microsoft.

Not to mention that the vast majority of big budget releases are available on both Xbox One and PS4, and that's where the lower price comes into play. I have to say too, that the 1TB Advanced Warfare Limited Edition Xbox One is a very slick looking console, and coupled with the white Sunset Overdrive Xbox One bundle, Microsoft has some very compelling products to attract gamers this holiday season.

uptownsoul3439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

@BattleAxe

"Xbox wont take the holidays just because they are cheaper" -- Actually, that would be the only reason why Xbox would take the holidays…

From June 9, 2014 through October 31, 2014 both the Xbox One and PS4 were the same price ($399)…And the majority of Xbox One games were available (except Sunset and MCC)…PS4 was more preferred in all 5 months…True Story.

BattleAxe3439d ago

Ok, well lets not forget that the PS4 was the cheaper console for at least the first 6 months after launch by $100.00 USD.

Sony also released the PS4 in 48 countries, whereas Microsoft released the Xbox One in only 13 countries.

So this isn't a simple straight up comparison that you can make when talking about sales.

jznrpg3438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

I dont want to play any of those actually.

Thatguy-3103438d ago

Games that people want to play? That explains why they been selling a lot. Oh wait nvm. Selling average at best. Xbox is selling right now because of the cheaper price tags and the good AMOUNT of bundled games.

DoubleM703439d ago

Why does it worry you? It doesn't make your choice of consoles any less of a value.

Bigpappy3439d ago

LOL at PS4 gamers trying to tell others how bad this is for M$ too offer all of these discounts. Mean while said gamers are looking at their pockets and and that high quality game selection and going: Do I really care how much M$ is loosing?

rainslacker3439d ago

I think it's great for the consumer, not great for MS. I also think that MS has it's reasons beyond just beating Sony. Beating Sony this holiday is just way too short-sighted for MS...a company worth billions.

It does have some negative consequences in the console wars perspective, but I'm sure for people getting a next gen console for $350(which is what I brought the Wii U for) plus 2-3 games have no problem with it at all.

There is some long term benefit to MS getting more consoles out there. Selling more games to get those licensing costs from 3rd party, and live subscriptions, and of course making the system more appealing to 3rd party publisher to keep support for the long haul.

Pogmathoin3439d ago

If that worries you Val, that is pathetic....

Kingdomcome2473439d ago

I'm not sure as to why that would worry you. Why do you always comment first on your submitted articles?

rainslacker3439d ago

Why would it worry you if the X1 overtakes the PS4 due to price?

That implies to me that you care more about if people play games on the PS4 rather than just play games.

I think sometimes people buy consoles for silly reasons, but price isn't one of those silly reasons...it's perfectly reasonable to consider price when purchasing a console.

Aceman183438d ago

I'm personally waiting for the system to be permanently priced at $250 with a much smaller redesign, and the release of Quantum Break before I pony up for the X1.

I have more than enough patience and time to wait for all 3 of these of these things.

geddesmond3438d ago

Everyone loves a good deal but overtake PS4 sales?? You mean overtake as in the US and UK only right?? As soon as January hits and X1 returns to 399 no informed consumer will buy an X1 especially with no exclusives to push the console in early 2015. People wanting an X1 will just wait until the next price reduction.

So there half a mil extra sales in the US will becaught up to by April of next year again by PS4.

beerzombie3438d ago

China too; but who gives a crap about tiny as nations that have small populations. USA and UK and now China rule the charts not even Japan matters stop with this global crap.

showtimefolks3438d ago

so the xbox one outsells ps4 once in a year and all of the sudden we should take notice, seriously. look at world wide sales.(oh i forgot world wide market isn't important,. no wonder why ps3 caught xbox360 by consistently outselling xbox36o in world wide market)

also please buy sunset overdrive its an awesome game. If this game doesn't end up selling well than it proves the point that people only buy shooters on xbox Brand

Aceman183438d ago

If sunset overdrive reaches a million in physical sales it will be a miracle in my book. It looks like a fun game, and love insomniac games but it's not enough for me to purchase the system.

Once quantum break drops this game will be a second purchase.

HeMan763438d ago

Worries you? Why? Are you a share holder of Sony or something?

Tapewurm3438d ago

What the title should read is "Microsoft's last ditch effort to pander this floundering system to masses shows that they are truly desperate." Kind of sad really.

MSBAUSTX3438d ago

How in any universe is it "Floundering"? It has sold nearly 10 million in it's first year! Whether it is winning the "Race" or not that is still an extremely successful launch for a video game console and it is picking up steam. Quit with your elitist PS4 Fanboyism and try to be happy for someone other than yourself for once.

Xb1ps43438d ago

Is it really that sad to you?

I just don't get some of you "gamers"

Tapewurm3437d ago

@MSBAUSTX & xb1ps4...The drastic price drops they have made for this console are all you need to look at to understand from a business standpoint that this machine is "floundering".

Please let me clarify for you guys why I posted what I did... This is Microsoft's worst performing console to date. It looks great on paper until you compare it to it's competition...just a weaker machine catering to a more TV/Casual Gamer community...seems to me like they tried to combine a Wii/xbox360 with the hopes of capturing "Wii-like" sales numbers... (and they have failed)... it is sad to me because Microsoft assumes people are uneducated and aren't capable of seeing through their BS... their machine is weaker and that should be important to ALL core gamers... graphics, performance, and gameplay DO MATTER and Sony seems to understand this....they have better first party studios that show this with each game launch....and the 3rd party studios that do not "dumb-down" their games to make them on par with the xbone version show this as well. It is just fact.... there is a reason the PS4 hasn't received the deep price cuts that their competitor is being forced to roll out.... the PS4 is the more powerful and better performing console and core gamers know it.

blackout3438d ago

Na. If and only if Microsoft catches up, everyone who makes phone for android will be paying for the cost. Microsoft makes Billions of business that manufacture android phones. It's be a while since Microsoft has reported a lost. Don't count on it now.

airsick73438d ago

Not unless they figure out how to sell 7 million units in one month.

Thatguy-3103438d ago

Overall hardware sales are down from last year. Microsoft tactic shows why.

creeping judas3438d ago

Please explain how Microsoft's tactics has caused the overall hardware sales to drop from last year. I am interested to hear your quantitative analysis of the situation.

Thatguy-3103438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

@creepingjudas
Simple So Many Bundles and price reductions when you compare it to last year.

http://venturebeat.com/2014...

jb2273438d ago

Same here, Sony's only in trouble these days because consumers are becoming cheaper & cheaper, buying based on price instead of quality & durability. The more people buy into these cheap products w/ short lifespans, the fewer quality built products we will have access to. I personally would rather buy a quality tv that will remain in good working order for years as opposed to buying a cheaper one bound to break down w/in a year or two, and I'd like to keep the potential for doing so personally. Not saying the Xbox One is cheaply built or that it won't be durable, but last gen the 360 most definitely was poorly made, resulting in millions of broken & bricked consoles. The more people buy into cheap products, the more likely the same results are bound to proliferate.

fanboysmackdown3439d ago

It's good for everyone as gamers. Sony will be forced to follow suit and that's why the whole fanboy bull$hit is just that. Competition is the only way prices come down.

PrinceOfAllSaiyans3439d ago

Sony won't be forced to do anything. PlayStation will always be on top worldwide. Which is more important than 1 territory. And the XB1 is still far behind Sony's 15 million sold.

DoubleM703439d ago

You do know that one territory equals about 60 million in sales over the life span of a consoles. Competition is good and it pushes the other company to compete.

DoubleM703439d ago

Yup I'm hoping Sony answers the call and make it $350, so I can finally buy one. I love playing the Show.

rainslacker3439d ago

Sony would probably only feel forced if the sales of the PS4 were to decline due to the price cut. Even the PS3 hasn't seen a major price cut since the PS4's release. So far they are exceeding expectations. Price is generally relative to demand.

Otherwise, I expect next E3 or holiday that PS4 will see a price cut given historical trends.

ValKilmer3439d ago

Could we see a $300 PS4 in 2015?

bleedsoe9mm3439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

If we do we'll see a 20$-30$ cheaper xb1 until US numbers even up

BattleAxe3439d ago

No, Sony will keep the price as high as they can get away with for as long as they can get away with it. With Sony losing hundreds of millions of dollars each and every quarter for the last six or seven years, the Playstation division is essentially carrying the rest of the company.

Unlike Sony, Microsoft is making money, and just surpassed Exxon to take the title of the 2nd most valuable company in the word just behind Apple. On Sony's side of the equation, they are in such dire straits, that I believe that it was last quarter that they decided not to pay any dividends to shareholders(Google for confirmation).

http://www.techtimes.com/ar...

What this means is that Microsoft has far more flexibility and resources to play around with than Sony has.

One of the reasons why I switched over to Microsoft this generation, is that Sony is in survival mode. What we are witnessing is Sony's last stand if they can't manage to stop the bleeding. They've gone all out this time around, and fortunately for them, PS4 has been a hit, but they absolutely need to cash in on the success of the PS4 in a big way.

What this means is no price drop anytime soon, and a whole bunch of monthly and yearly paid subscription services, so they can bring in steady cash flow from their existing Sony Entertainment Network customers every month.

This also means that they will cut down budgets for their first party game studios, and they will further monetize and leverage their big game franchises with more DLC and micro-transaction offerings. What they will do, and have been doing, is relying heavily on indie developers to fill the void, but this will probably become more obvious after the next 2 years, after Uncharted and the next God of War games get released. They will follow the Vita formula, where they initially gave heavy support on release, and as time has gone along, they have let indie developers pick up the slack.

The Vita is a perfect example of how far Sony is willing to let their hardware coast without major first party intervention, and I believe that they will do the same thing with the PS4, once they've finished delivering their full shot with their next two big releases. I would also look to see them close down and/or merge some of their first party studios in order to cut budget costs and increase profits. Zipper Interactive was shut down towards the end of last generation, and now Evolution Studios in my opinion, will be the first to go in this generation.

Majin-vegeta3439d ago

I think my brain just died reading this...thanks alot.

OT:Who knows what it could mean

blackout3438d ago

Probable. But Microsoft is waiting to drop the diskless X1. Can you say 249.99. E3 2015.

Seafort3439d ago

Discounting the Xbox and games this early in the generation is cheapening the Xbox brand and people will expect it to stay at that price permanently.

When it doesn't MS will be in trouble.

This isn't Microsoft being generous to consumers but being desperate for market share as they are losing everything what they gained last generation within the first year.

They'll pay the price when it comes to profits of the Xbox division or lack there of.

hello123439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

Cheapening the brand how? Microsoft is ensuring more people buy the x box 1 and play games on that console.

Only on here is it considered bad. I guess because its not Sony doing it.

You realise hardware prices drop after a year and Microsoft and Sony can afford to cut the price. The difference is Sony doesn't want to or feel it needs to and thats fair enough. There is wiggle room after a year to drop price. And Microsoft first price drop was only in October for a few months- to 329

A shaving of 50 dollars is not unexpected a year after launch- companies can do it and not lose money.

Clarence3439d ago

A shaving of $50 dollars? Try $499 down to $329. That's not a $50 dollar drop. Plus the free games. The xbone was released Nov 22. The 1st price drop came on June 9. That's 7 months.

Death3438d ago

@Clarence,

In June where you say the first price drop occurred, the Xbox One with Kinect was still $499. That's the same as launch. With the "temporary" $50 price drop it is currently $449. http://www.microsoftstore.c...

A SKU was released in June without Kinect for $399. That's not the same as a price drop. If you buy a Kinectless SKU and decide later to get Kinect it's actually a $50 price increase since Kinect sold alone is $149.

The free games happen every holiday with Microsoft. They are called Holiday Bundles.

cleft53439d ago

If they don't make the price of the Xbox One permanently $350 they will see a backlash. In the form of consumers not buying the consoles anywhere near as much because they think a price cut or really good bundle is just around the corner.

The real test will be if, and when, they raise the price of the Xbox One back to $400 after the Holiday season is over. Honestly, I don't think its a good idea for them to do that and I believe Phil Spencer is going to use this boost in sales to try to get the Xbox One to stay at $350 permanently. If that announcement happens or the price remains discounted to this point for long enough, then and only then will the true battle begin.

Death3438d ago

It's pretty clear they will leave the price at $449/$349 after the Holidays. It was a marketing move to say this is a temporary drop. If people think the price may go back up they have incentive to buy one now. If they think the price is going to keep dropping they will wait. Expect an announcement after Christmas where they say due to overwhelming demand they have decided to keep the price at $449/$349 on non-bundles. I would imagine they will give a cut-off date on bundles Holiday before the price goes back up to clear old stock faster.

mediate-this3439d ago

Xb1 is a better deal at 350, at 500 its atrocious and insulting to me that micro would release a weaker console at that price, more expensive than the more powerful console.

At 350 its a sweet deal

DJustinUNCHAIND3439d ago

How very ignorant of you.

Any losses incurred upfront will be recovered with subs and software sales.

You call it desperate, the rest of the real world calls it business.

ger23963439d ago (Edited 3439d ago )

So why didn't they launch the Xbox 1 with a price of $299 or cheaper? If they're going to make up the difference in games and subscriptions, why not go that route?

Bigpappy3439d ago

You only drop the price when it make sense to so. They started out selling reasonably well at $500
Now with they have lost ground to PS4 by a sizable margin, it makes sense to have a lower price point.
Sony undercut them with a lower price point early as they announced their price after M$. That along with Gddr5 went a long way in getting PS4 to were it is at present. M$ choose to use price advantage now to help narrow the gap. Some ps4 fans don't like it, but that is expected. Some care more about how many PS4 s sell than if they get games for it

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

Christopher39d ago

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack39d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher39d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack39d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher39d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack39d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher39d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz14939d ago (Edited 39d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander197238d ago

Nobody cares about Sunset Overdrive, except all the xbox fanboys who didn't buy it but like to come into articles about the game and try to act like it's somehow Sony's fault for whatever reason.

there was supposed to be a sequel. IG had it all planned but MS said no. And Sony wont greenlight a sequel if they cant get the first one away from MS. Plus... IG has other projects they moved on to anyways so...... yeah.

fr0sty38d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref39d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher39d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman39d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood39d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

romulus2338d ago

What's it considered if it just sells 1.8 million copies like it did?.

FinalFantasyFanatic38d ago

It was okay when I played it on PC, idk if I'd consider it one of the more beloved games of that generation.

I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game - but, I loved it. It was one of my favorite games of it's time and that generation. Replayability could have been better, but I still managed to play it several times. I would have greatly appreciated a sequel and definitely would have been in line to pick it up..

Things happen.

Christopher38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

romulus2338d ago

Your comment literally contradicts itself but troll statements typically do. If Sony is so greedy for money as you proclaim than wouldn't it behoove them to not only release the first game on their console but a sequel as well, as that would be a way for them to make profit and that's apparently their focus according to you? Speaking of profit and greed, I suppose Microsoft bought all those Developers and Publishers in hopes that they wouldn't make any money from it, right? Your ability to troll on this site with impunity is whats sad, but it is what it is.

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

PrinceOfAnger39d ago

Very fun game that need a sequel.

-Foxtrot39d ago

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

Tacoboto39d ago

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Christopher39d ago

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

darthv7239d ago

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

badz14938d ago

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv7239d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.

babadivad39d ago

This game was so fun. Me and my brother put many hours into this one.

Insomniac Games Has Made Just $567 off Sunset Overdrive

Gamingbolt writes: "Insomniac Games has enjoyed commercial success on a level it had never seen before with its Marvel’s Spider-Man games, but not all of its titles in the last decade or so have seen eye-watering sales. In fact, specifically where Sunset Overdrive is concerned, the money the studio has made off it is quite negligible, to say the least."

Not gonna lie... looking at the IG roadmap I was fully hoping to see SSOD2 and Resistance reboot on there. The first SSOD was fun. It definitely needed the benefits of a 60fps mode and I was expecting there to be some sort of patch or FPS boost support when played on SX. Sadly... that ship sailed, but Sony gave me hope they would do the game justice. It really is a fun game that deserves to be played.

Gazondaily147d ago

At least it made some money. Ratchet and Clank lost Sony about $8m.

Eonjay147d ago (Edited 147d ago )

And yet they were happy to join PlayStation and since then they have made that back many, many times over. And clearly, it wasn't enough to keep them from releasing another Rachet per leaks.

Einhander1972147d ago

Wanna talk about the profitability of Forza or Redfall?

8m is a number that will easily be made back when iR&C has been on the market as long as SO has, R&C will make more profit that SO ever will.

mkis007147d ago

Nah that was later updated to say it made sony money but maybe not insomniac

maniacmayhem147d ago (Edited 147d ago )

It's probably why Insomniac is going the Marvel route for a while and then later bring out their next R&C game.

It's not a bad way to do business honestly. They develope something for a while that will guarantee some money and then in between being out something of their own.

Unfortunately, with the way the industry is, this is how things are going to be mostly.

@Eonjay

Of course they were happy, I remember when they were happy they were independent, but they saw how tough it was being that and without first party support and came running back to Sony.

Einhander1972146d ago

I just want to add that $8m is only 265,000 copies at $30. The game will easily cross that.

outsider1624146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

That money can be spent buying a PS5 with Ratchet and Clank.

IRetrouk146d ago

No it didn't septic, you read projections and thought you read actual money made, calm down 🤣

Outside_ofthe_Box146d ago

"No it didn't septic, you read projections and thought you read actual money made, calm down"

So you saying he got excited and jumped the gun like a typical overzealous fanatic?

itsmebryan146d ago

@Gazo
R&C lost $8 million. So after all the pride PS5 owners took in the game they didn't buy it? That's crazy. Some said before Sony 1st party games don't sell well. I guess it's true

CobraKai146d ago

@Maniac
Marvel came to Sony with the pitch to do a Marvel game after MS turned them down. Sony gave the job to Insomniac who got to choose any Marvel character to do a game for, and the rest is history

DivineHand125146d ago

If there is one game they should have made money on it's Ratchet and Clank. That game was fun from start to finish. I hope this doesn't discourage them from making more games in the future.

Lol look at everyone here jumping to reply based only on other comment here

The claim that R&C made $73m while costing $81m was based on leaked 2020 presentation slide, and on the same leak you can also find Insomniac’s own claim that it already made $145m on R&C Rift Apart..

outsider1624146d ago

As you can see they dont read much.

Zhipp146d ago

I didn't know Insomniac earned money from games. As a first party studio I figured all profits/losses were absorbed my the parent company.

Vits146d ago

Unless Sony coughs up the cash to buy the publishing rights from Microsoft, or the wild scenario of Microsoft snagging the IP from Sony happens, talking about sequels, ports, or even DLC is pretty much wishful thinking.

Source: https://gamevro.com/microso...

Jin_Sakai147d ago

If it were on PlayStation it would’ve sold better. Being a Microsoft exclusive was a mistake.

CrashMania147d ago

Zeref running around calling everything a flop, bet he won't call this a flop, can't begin to imagine why.

darthv72147d ago

well..... it did make IG some kind of $ unlike R&C which lost $8m in the process.

Does that count?

TheKingKratos146d ago

Well darth ... You went full fanboy and pretty much acting stupid or possibly can't read

As a user above said

They claim that R&C made $73m while costing $81m was based on leaked 2020 presentation slide, and on the same leak you can also find Insomniac’s own claim that it already made $145m on R&C Rift Apart..

Kribwalker147d ago

Yeah 😂😂😂 That’s why the newest ratchet game lost $8 million

purple101147d ago

Had a bigger budget
+ console shortage
+ is was ps5 only.

God if war and gt7 were made crossgen and made money in the same time period

Jin_Sakai146d ago

“Yeah 😂😂😂 That’s why the newest ratchet game lost $8 million“

Sunset Overdrive budget $42.6 million
Ratchet & Clank budget $81 million

You do the math. 😉

Eonjay147d ago

Rachet and Clank sold more than Sunset Overdrive so yes.

CrashMania147d ago

You'd have a point if the numbers weren't from 2022, and before the PC port, and before the thread, mkis. Might not have made a huge profit, but it didn't lose money.

notachance146d ago

Before 2022 and before PC Port, yes

Be honest, you jumped to reply this only by looking at some other comment mentioning that while completely skipping the following replies aren’t you?

Jin_Sakai146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

Sunset Overdrive budget $42.6 million
Ratchet & Clank budget $81 million

And R&C was profitable. Even with nearly twice the budget.

“Update to the previous Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sales thread: It was profitable. Sold 2,7m(as of roughly February 2022)”

I mean, maybe because of market reach. But it wouldn't sell better than R&C or SM games. It was a fun game, but not as enjoyable as the others, IMHO.

ChasterMies146d ago

Dead Rising 3, Rise Son or Rome, the Titanfall franchise, and the Tomb Raider franchise were all hurt by Xbox exclusivity.

cammers1995146d ago

Exactly. Fuze and sunset overdrive. Both came to Xbox. Both failed. Hmm.

Knightofelemia146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

It was an exclusive because during that time Insomniac was not owned by Sony. Sony has to honor that contract or they will be forced to pay it out or go to court. No different then a Microsoft title being an Sony exclusive they have to honor the contract.

I'm sure that big platform jump had nothing to do with it right? Pull a Rare, win Rare Prizes.

P_Bomb147d ago (Edited 147d ago )

Re. R&C and the 8 million, I wonder if hitting PS+ Extra hurt its legs? Good get for the service, but did it eat some sales?

FIELDMARSHALL_P147d ago

More than likely, but it could also make new fans that wouldn't have normally played the game buy the new one.

Hofstaderman147d ago

Same excuse XBOX fans use and look at whats happening to them and their preferred console...

Hofstaderman147d ago

I think it did. This highlights the pitfall of day one releases on sub services. I know R and C was not day one but it would have benefited from having more time to garner sales on its own steam.
