November 2014 NPD: Much Ado About Nothing

CraveOnline: "I’ve never seen or read Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, but thanks to a reasonably thorough high school education, I’m aware that it was written in the latter half of the Elizabethan Age, and is likely not a play about videogames. If somebody were to wipe my memory and erase this knowledge, though, I might guess instead that it’s a dramatic recounting of the November 2014 NPD Group sales results."

"Shakespeare-calibur drama"

A phrase and spelling actually used in this article.

novacav3448d ago

Haha, a reference to the article's title perhaps?

WeAreLegion3448d ago

The user doth protest too much, methinks.

Abash3448d ago

Much ado about nothing because Sony is actually making a profit this gen and are in very healthy worldwide lead. Sure, they may have lost November but they are focused on making a lot of profit from PS4 hardware, software, and subscriptions. And they are doing just that.

It was a big deal last gen because the PS3 was losing so much money with each sale for a good portion of it's first years on the market

venom063448d ago (Edited 3448d ago )

ok.. Craveonline is confusing THEMSELVES!! First, they put out a GREAT article titled "5 Things We can Learn from the NPD Report" (very accurate section talking about the failings of Call of Duty).. then, come back with a article titled, "Much ado about Nothing"??? Which is correct, Crave??

I would still like to see some confirmed official numbers. Everyone is talking like the 1200k vs 800k is official and yet the article that reports this is listed as a rumor still.

I'm not complaining, just make it official. The contract is there, just sign it. Then it's yours.

As a wiiu owner I'm loving the fact that nintendo has to work for their sales. I really am enjoying the games they have and are releasing. Nintendo is extremely old school. They truly are survivors. People will come around eventually and maybe a price drop could help. Yet a hardware revision and die shrink about two years from now should yield a pricedrop. What I'm seeing is gamers are really cash strapped this gen. Just look at all those broken games they bought on top of a $400 system.

This is showing nintendo what the current gen of gamers are willing to pay. While also keeping their type of gamers happy. It's true sony and Nintendo cater to different like minded gamers that differ slightly. Sony is right wii owners are buying ps4 possibly.

What is interesting is. If you collect amiibos you could actually sell a few to pay for a wiiu, a nice buisness deal huh?

"But the PS4’s dominance excited me. It excited me because finally, something unique was happening, and it looked as though a shift away from what will soon be a multi-decade stalemate might actually occur. Instead, we’ve already returned to an eternal heavyweight boxing match. Each fighter delivers a knockout punch every one to three years, but the receiving party, without fail, wills itself conscious just before the referee can count to ten."

So, to this writer, he prefers a monopolistic approach where there is only one winner. What is the fun in that. With everyone playing the same thing then nobody is special.

Honestly, people like an underdog. It's that come from behind spirit that makes sporting events so nail biting exciting. When one team is totally dominating the other...what's the point of even watching anymore (unless its your team winning).

Personally, i prefer to see the back and forth between combatants as it shows that neither is willing to concede and want to continue going for the sake of the fans and their own pride.

KwietStorm_BLM3448d ago

Well this ain't sports, and I really couldn't care less about an underdog or what sales numbers are. I really wish people could just enjoy their games, unite the community, and have meaningful discussions about issues that affect all of us as gamers, instead of babble about silicon and resolution and number of countries such and such sold XX units in.

CaptainObvious8783447d ago

Plus devs could focus on fewer platforms and therefore make their games better is a shorter amount of time.

SniperControl3448d ago

Congrats to MS for an incredible November, i was one of those 1.2 million gamers that bought a X1, however MS need to keep this up and not just until January.
The only reason MS has done this well is because of the huge discounts and free bundled games, i fear that the sales will stagnate once again come the return of full price.
Even with there deep pockets, i just dont see MS continuing the discount beyond Jan.
That's also when Sony's two big hitters are kicking in the Order and Bloodbourne.

Illusive_Man3448d ago (Edited 3448d ago )

I really need another Xbox One....maybe tax time.

Not really interested in a PS4. The Sony exclusives don't do it for me, the Indies are on Steam.

I'd probably get a Wii U for the kids before I got a PS4.

I may get a PS4 later down the road.

WeAreLegion3448d ago

Why not just get a PS4 to go alongside that XBO? I bought an XBO this month to sit next to the PS4 and Wii U. They're getting along famously. :)

Xaphy3448d ago

Lulz why do people disagree? Im also buying a xbox one to sit along my ps4. Its great to be a gamer.

Gemmol3447d ago

because ps4 and xbox play 90 percent of the same game, anyone who have this combination must really hate Nintendo because outside of both consoles first party, the 3rd party are the same, and none of the 1st party score well this year, in other words, the 3rd party games had a better year on Xbox One and PS4, while the Wii U have its 1st party games that out did the top 3rd party games on Metacritic......in other words....if you buy a ps4 first, your second system should be a Wii U if you really consider a gamer, then you can get xbox last......or xbox first, then wii u second, then ps4 last......either way no one should have both systems that share the same game

WeAreLegion3447d ago

So, I can't play both inFamous: Second Son and Sunset Overdrive?

LittleBigPlanet 3 and Project SPARK?

The Order: 1886 and Quantum Break?

Uncharted 4 and Halo 5?

Why shouldn't a gamer play both? I have a Wii U, as well, but there's no way I'm missing out on any of these epic exclusives. I even mentioned that I have a Wii U. What's your game here?

Letthewookiewin3448d ago

So coool bro I already have two PS4's so I dont need an X1 so there. I am picking an X1 for Quantnum though...

Gaming247allday3448d ago

Man what a NPD, what a win for MS, what a crazy read that was on neogaf, and what some of the fanboys said was ridiculous on both sides, all around just maddness

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H99h ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX4h ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H91h ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

banger889h ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk776h ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos4h ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris1h ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

Two trillion dollar company that just can't wait to put as many people possible out of work as fast as possible.

It feels like every single thing they do is making gaming worse and destroying the industry.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead7h ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan7h ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl7h ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.
