DualShockers Review: Halo: The Master Chief Collection - All Hail the Chief

Joel Taveras writes, "Asking someone to pick their favorite Halo title is like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. It’s such a difficult task because each has its own unique identity that you love and cherish. Luckily with Halo: The Master Chief Collection you don’t have to pick. You can have them all. In any order you want. And then some.
I’m here to tell you that this landmark in fan service is not just a Halo fan’s dream come true, it is arguably one of the best and most feature packed compilations I have seen in a video game."

Great review, this means quite a bit coming from DS.

Dualshockers: "Asking someone to pick their favorite Halo title is like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. It’s such a difficult task because each has its own unique identity that you love and cherish."

Dat hyperbole!
I love gaming but sometimes it's best not to drink all the PR KoolAid else you sound a bit detached from reality and the review is undermined.

spicelicka3471d ago

No not really, what he's trying to say that everyone has certain memories and nostalgia attached to each game. I played halo 2 the most, but I'd have a difficult time too if i was asked which is my favourite.

This is how halo fans feel so I don't think its hyperbole.

Naga3471d ago

@ Pumblechook

Did it ever occur to you that the people might actually love this series, regardless of the PR?

dodgemoose3471d ago

@LogicStomper

It can be a simile and hyperbolic. They're not mutually exclusive.

Mr Pumblechook3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

@Naga. It's okay to love a game. But when you've had children it's sounds really silly to have someone compare the way you love a game to the way you love children. I love Halo. It's my favourite FPS. I don't think the reviewer is being dishonest, I think he is being honest. It's just that when you've had children you wouldn't equate the love of, say, Halo 2, to the love you feel when you first hold your child!

@LogicStomper. It's hyperbole. I have taught English in the past. Some people think that because you are black and they are white they can tell you how to speak and write English and that's not right.

XBLSkull3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

Anyone reviewing fairly is giving this collection 10/10. Best collection released since the Orange Box and IMO even better.

I'm interested to see the AC Unity scores and if pro-PlayStation sites knock points off because it shares the same CPU bottleneck as the X1.

mixelon3471d ago

He's not saying "people love Halo like they love their children" - he's only saying choosing between them is difficult - similarly to how it would be with children.

"Asking someone to pick their favorite Halo title is like asking a parent to pick their favorite child." - it doesn't equate the two.

breakpad3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

the only good halo is the very first Halo CE (which is stellar not simply good) all others (including remasters) are at best mediocrities

4Sh0w3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

Mixelon, exactly I have 3 kids I love very much but your explanation is exactly what I gathered from what he wrote. The feeling of trying to pick between them is what he expressed, not comparing your love for the game to the love you feel for your kids.

I think dualshockers is spot on here. Nice to see all around better balanced coverage from them lately.

Wow DS I am impressed. Several mags out there have been giving this a lower score then any of the 4 individual games got because they have an Axe to grind with MSFT.

Some of the reviewers are too young to remember how big of an impact Halo had on console shooters and online. It created the genere. Before that FPS was keyboard and mouse and online was PC only. To these kids comparing Halo vs Far Cry or Crysis, it looks and feels old.

Hope people aren't expecting the best gfx ever. This is about doing homage to the most ground breaking series of all time, warts and all.

snookiegamer3471d ago

Why are you impressed??

Dualshockers is NOT exclusively PS!

They cover Xbox & PS brands as well as others.

MCC is worth the scores it has so far received, but it is a remaster just like TLOU-R...regardless of 100 maps!

darthv723471d ago

its a remaster...yes. but not like TLOU. It would be more in line with the other remastered compilations like R&C, J&D, sly cooper...

Not just a facelift but a culmination of the series as a whole. in one nice and convenient cost effective package.

it would be difficult for me to pick my favorite. i have such respect for each game and the differences each one introduced. halo 2 though...driving the scorpion tank along that long highway and firing off rounds in the distance....classic.

MasterCornholio3471d ago

@Ninja

Was it because he mentioned the Last of Us?

I honestly don't see anything wrong with his comment. He didn't say that the MCC was bad or anything on the contrary he's saying that the game deserved the high reviews that it got.

KiwiViper853471d ago

If it was just Halo4 in 1080p/60, you would have a valid argument...

VforVideogames3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

Don't worry in another six months we're going to have tlou the ps4-anniversary-ultra-alpha-su per-remastered-half-a-year-edit ion.

Can I suggest BG3 as a 6th? It’s helping me pass the time quite well.

anast272d ago

I'm still trying to finish WotR.

DivineHand125272d ago

With the release date being just a little over a week away, it may not be a good idea to burn yourself out on mech games until then.

RavenWolfx272d ago

i want a Chromehounds sequel so bad...

raWfodog272d ago (Edited 272d ago )

Surprised that the article didn’t mention Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries if we’re talking about mech-related games.

ZeekQuattro272d ago

It was an odd article imo. Like why are games that feature a handful of mech themed levels in there. When I think of mech games I don't think Halo and Wolfenstein no matter how fun those levels were.

Best Xbox Game Studios Franchises

These are some of the best and most popular video game franchises now owned by Xbox Game Studios and Microsoft.

Sciurus_vulgaris281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Microsoft was involved with Halo, Gears, Forza, Ori, Flight Simulator and Fable from early development, I will give them credit for those franchises. Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Doom were established franchise before being acquired by MS.

Crows90281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Exactly. They had nothing to do with their most popular franchises now.

Their old franchises are dwindling and pretty much non-existent.

They've had perfect dark in the chamber this whole time and haven't done squat...that tells you the kind of company they are. Fable is another franchise that's been destroyed and ignored...let's see how the new game turns out.

Profchaos280d ago

Yeah perfect dark, banjo conquer ms seems to kill more franchises then they like to admit while pretending to care about others like hexen

Sitdown281d ago

Given the article specifically says "now owned", what made you feel the need to do a break down?

thesoftware730280d ago

Sit-down,

Because it's N4G and any opportunity to shit on MS is never missed.

Rude-ro280d ago

Gears is not.
It was the same as mass effect:
Just contracted.

closed_account281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Ah yes, feels like forever ago since Microsoft created Skyrim. So much so, I had actually forgotten they had created it and the other Elder Scrolls games! 🤔

*They really shaped my preteen years w the original Doom too!

ocelot07281d ago

Don't forget the original Elder Scrolls way back in 1994 or fallout in 1997.

Sitdown278d ago

So you don't understand the combination of "now owned"?

Crows90281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

I fully expect all these popular franchises to be killed off by Microsoft. Just a matter of time.

Unless they take a huge distance approach which pretty much means they don't ba e anything to do with the games being made ...in that case the franchises should be fine. But then...they shouldn't really get credit.

DOMination-281d ago

"I fully expect all these popular franchises to be killed off by Microsoft. Just a matter of time."

Based on what?? Microsoft usually gets stick for releasing too MANY games in their franchises, to the point where it's quite a long-running joke - one I'm sure you've partaken in before.

Pretty much all of their major IP has had releases in the last five years or have upcoming releases scheduled so I see no evidence whatsoever for this claim.

"Unless they take a huge distance approach which pretty much means they don't ba e anything to do with the games being made"

But.. They HAVE been very hands-off for a long time and have drawn lots of criticism for it?

fr0sty280d ago

See: All of Rare's games

DOMination-280d ago

I really wouldn't say that MS have let Rare franchises die. They've just had the freedom to create new IP in Sea of Thieves and Everwild. MS are currently developing a Perfect Dark game, licensed Killer Instinct out, Rare themselves released several compilations and several Banjo games as well as PDZ in the past.

I'm not sure what else you could want. They can only make one game at a time. You can't say MS let all their franchises die but also be annoyed that they allow their studios to make new IP.

Profchaos280d ago

If that's the case where my banjo or conquer sequel why didn't I get sunset overdrive 2 oh yeah not enough bro in those games

ChasterMies281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

EA is a good example of what can happen to a franchise when a larger corporation buys up studios from a smaller corporation. Quarterly earnings should never matter more than quality.

wiz7191280d ago

@Crows that is the case , Zenimax is operating independently of MS and have full creative freedom to do what they want. Zenimax games aren’t being published under XGS ,

ravens52281d ago

Soon Microsoft will be known for making Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Candy Crush, Call of Duty etc. Lmao they know what they're doing. Especially with the archiving issue the gaming industry has.

closed_account281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Microsoft built the game industry. Microsoft invented games. Didn't you know? ;)

**What a bizzaro world we live in where the losers can become the winners overnight.

Hypertension140281d ago

@ravens52

What are those franchises you're talking about?
Activision/Blizzard only makes Call of Duty and Bethesda has Elder Scrolls and Starfield only, stop making it seen that is much more anti competitive/consumer than it actually is.......

Profchaos280d ago

Zero creative vision and the ability to bankroll it by purchasing everything that everyone else had success with even Halo wasn't technically theirs Bungie had to sell it to them to become independent

Atari6052B281d ago

You mean any studio Microsoft could acquire to flog last gen games on game pass ... What happened to HD-DVD that Microsoft pushed so hard ...

Games with the dumbest NPCs

Non-playable characters in certain games are meme material, thanks to their foolish behavior. These are the big-budget games with the dumbest NPCs.
