IGN: Alone in the Dark Review & Video Review

Alone in the Dark has some good ideas, but it fails at most because it tries them all. Nice visuals, great fire effects and valiant efforts at innovation don't make up for boring combat, frustrating controls, poorly designed levels and a hackneyed story. There's a certain amount of old-school adventure charm in Alone in the Dark, but it shines only as the dimmest of lights, hemmed in by the darkness of its many failures.

Presentation - 4.5
Graphics - 6.0
Sound - 6.5
Gameplay - 3.0
Lasting Appeal - 3.0

Well that does it for me. I'll only be getting a rental. It's too bad because I had high hopes for this game.

Qbanboi5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

Ouch indeed.

Well, aleast Haze wont feel "Alone" this year. Ha, get it? ^^

SolidSnake935793d ago

Ha ha lolz bubs for you with the alone joke.

Superfragilistic5793d ago

Now I know why Phil Harrison doesn't want to make any more single player games! lol

barom5793d ago

dang, I really thought it would be something. Ahh well let it go down in price. I'll buy it for 5$

OMG
That's worse than HAZE!!!

Condoleezza Rice5793d ago

In my honest opinion;Haze is a 6.5,nothing more,nothing less.

A 6.5 in my book,is a game that is alright, but ultimately fails in delivering a great experience.I should also mention that after playing NG 2 I awarded it the same score.

On topic;Yowza,I didn't expect IGN to give this game a 3.5

dragunrising5793d ago

You have an Xbox 360 to play Ninja Gaiden 2? Did you borrow one and play the game all the way through? Someone brings up Haze and YOU promptly dish out some Xbox hate...sounds odd. Good grief, I can't take anything you say seriously, except your lies.

On topic: 3.5 is a little harsh but is only one review. A single review shouldn't change your opinion of any game. If you don't believe the review, rent the game first before you decide to buy.

Superfragilistic5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

Who said "I should also mention that after playing NG 2 I awarded it the same score."

What has that got to do with Alone in the Dark? I understand the Haze reference because SUPER already raised it as did others and it's got a similar Metacritic. But NG2 has nothing to do with it other than making your motives completely transparent! lol

For reference:

Chalk
Alone in the Dark - 61 Metacritic
Haze - 55 Metacritic

Cheese
Ninja Gaiden 2 - 81 Metacritic

BIoodmask5793d ago

this game would be good. I really liked the first one. I should have know what to expect from Atari.

TheExecutive5793d ago

yeah they are kinda like sierra

MK_Red5793d ago

I'm with you Bloodmask but Atari's TimeShift wasn't too bad IMO. I kinda liked it and it got decent scores.

Still, after reading the review I got a feeling that reviewer didn't fully understand the game. It won't be the 8 we were expecting but also, not a 3.5.
Atari is going downhill and with the decision to stop making singleplayer games... lol. Goodbye Atari :)

HeroOfCows5793d ago

Sorry dude, TimeShift was Sierra, not Atari =(

MK_Red5793d ago

Dammit, my bad. Sierra's TimeShift :)

Thanks for the info HeroOfCows. Bubbles for you.

SolidSnake935793d ago

Yeah Atari makes a good game occasionally. When the planets align, a polar bear visits you in your dreams, and you find a penny on the streets and that is exactly what happened right before they released Neverwinter Nights 2.

ElementX5793d ago

Sierra used to be good. They made awesome games like Quest for Glory and King's Quest. Also Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers.

That genuinely, genuinely sucks. The reboot has clear flaws, but it really felt like a solid first step for this team to receive *greater* investment.

Alone in the dark is a fun game so that's unfortunate

CrimsonWing6910d ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the norm after a project is done?

Terry_B10d ago

That's standard. Teams are together for a Project, after its done some..and sometimes most devs are fired until the next Project is in the works and people are needed again. Only the core members stay in the time between the hot phase of the game development.

CrimsonWing699d ago

What’s annoying is people don’t understand how contractors work, either. All of this is uninformed knee-jerk reactions without any understanding of how employment works in this industry. There are key developers and staff that stay with a studio/publisher, but often times it’s a hire per project and then seeking new employment for a project. That’s how it’s always been…

coolbeans9d ago

That's a fair point too. I would say that in light of its tepid critical/commercial response and ongoing mass layoffs across the industry I think it's understandable for fans to worry about the longer-term implications. We'll see how it plays out in the future.

Alone in the Dark (XS) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "In one sense, it feels strange to even think Pieces Interactive had big shoes to fill with this series' legacy. Given what's come before, did it really? And yet, even when considering the last two flops over a two-decade span, there's still something about Alone in the Dark emblazoned on a title screen that carries a sense of revered history. In that respect, perhaps this reboot's best accomplishment is in honoring that spirit through its inventive world. It's also fair to emphasize knocks against its survival-horror design, some puzzle-solving, and so on; it certainly won't be considered a trendsetter like the 1992 classic. Still, the amount of goodwill wedded to its brighter qualities makes for something that dawdles the line between unfortunately-flawed and impressively-enticing."

Alone in the Dark review [SideQuesting]

The new Alone in the Dark remake doesn't do anything especially noteworthy, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's just... cromulent.
