Valkyria Chronicles: Another PS3 Exclusive RPG on the Horizon

Consoleme.ca writes: A while back I posted an article about the upcoming PS3 exclusive game White Knight Chronicles. To my surprise, many PS3 gamers had no idea it was even under development, much less coming sometime soon. And now, another under the radar PS3 exclusive is about to get PS3 owners excited again: Valkyria Chronicles (VC) or if you prefer the full name, Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles. Developed by Sega and already released in Japan, VC is a tactical RPG that features a unique turn-based battle system called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones). Essentially, each turn you will begin with a "command view" of the battlefield. Players may then select individual units to issue commands in an "action mode". This mode functions in real time and you can even aim your weapons to take headshots, bodyshots etc. It is an interesting blend of strategy and rpg elements when you see the game in action.

Also, you get to use Aika and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia as playable characters too. Too bad that this game has gone with relatively little advertisement or hype outside of Japan.

It has gotten some above average review which is fine by me. If I can enjoy Guardian Crusade I can definitely see myself enjoying this.

Do know this isn't a "traditional" RPG. This is a tactical RPG. Something along the of Final Fantasy Tactics. This is a genre inside a genre if you will. I really like this type of RPG as well but this has even a smaller fan base than more "traditional" RPGs. So for this to be your first...don't be highly disappointed and not try out FF13 when it debuts. You'll see how drastically different these two RPGs are.

Correction: You are right Oblivion is out, Folklore I wouldn't call much of an RPG but OK fair enough. The other 2 are only out in Japan so unless you live there or can speak Japanese they are not out in NA.

There are a few RPGs coming like you said on PS3, but some of those games will never see the light of day in the west. Eternal Sonata is only on PS3 in Japan thanks to Namco-Bandai being supremely cheap. As well it's never been confirmed that X-Edge is coming over either, as much as I'd like to see it.

I'm not sure I agree with your comments towards SEGA.

Personally, I thought "Viking", "TheClub" and both "Condemned" titles were pretty cool and "Virtua Fighter V" and "Sega Rally" were half decent. I'm also personally interested in the FPSer SEGA is publishing based on the "Aliens" universe.

I remember seeing it on the 1up show a few months back. Shane and some other guy were talking about the Japanese version that they had been playing. It all sounded really positive. The game has a really pretty art style and the unorthodox approach to a JRPG looks refreshing.

1) "Folklore" was actually a fantastic fantasy action-RPG, and I quite enjoyed it.

2) I'd rather wait for quality RPGs than get stuck with rubbish like "Blue Dragon" and "Two Worlds".

3) "Oblivion", "Dark Kingdom", "Folklore", "Enchanted Arms", "Ultimate Alliance" and the Oblivion expansions was enough for me in the first few months to be quite honest.

4) "Fallout3", "Final Fantasy XIII", "Eternal Sonata", "Valkyria Chronicles", "Last Remnant" and "Disgaea 3" are all on their way.

5) What do you care? You 360 owners didn't even buy the RPGs available to your system, so why pretend you care about RPGs?

TRUST ME, us PlayStation3 owners will be just fine in the RPG department.

Wow, I had heard of this game before now but this is the first I've really read or seen anything of it. Seeing the art style and knowing you get to use some characters from Skies of Arcadia... this is going on my wishlist!

Completely dig the graphics too. Usually celshading tends to rub me the wrong way, but this looks really nice and some parts of the video even reminded me of something you'd see from Ghibli!

Even though they were showing this on a You Tube Video it still looks good only we are not quite getting the full experience yet when it comes to graphics but game play wise we got a lot to look forward to.
November is a while away but still a great game worth waiting for in my book.
Thank god it isn't coming to the 360 they would of f***ed up a really good RPG Title.
