10 Games That Spent the Longest Time in Development

8CN: Delayed games are pretty commonplace, and can happen for any number of reasons. Sometimes game-breaking bugs crop up late in development, maybe the team is having trouble adjusting to new hardware, or maybe the studio simply wants to change the timing of the release for commercial reasons. In any case, most times it just means we'll have to wait a few months longer to get our hands on the game... unlike these ten games, which left fans waiting for a half a decade or more.

The only reason why Shenmue II struggled was because that asshat Peter Moore not only sold out Shenmue, but SEGA/Shenmue fans in general just to get a job at Microsoft. I mean seriously making a deal to have Shenmue II as an exclusive on the Xbox in america sealed the fate of that franchise. If shenmue would have came out on all consoles (including the Dreamcast, the damn mandatory platform it should've been released on) then we would probably already have a Shenmue III by now.

Hoffmann3494d ago

Shenmue 2 was at least released here in Europe for the Dreamcast. Always wondered me why they did not release it in the USA too at the time. Thanks for your comment with that clarification!

MrSwankSinatra3493d ago

Yeah Europe was lucky they got both versions of Shenmue, while the U.S. only got the Xbox verison & Japan got the Dreamcast Version. The Dreamcast version of Shenmue II is superior than than the Xbox version. The way Shenmue was designed was in similar way in how Mass Effect was designed. Where your actions in one game will effect the next game when you transfer your save over. That's what makes the Dreamcast version so much superior, you can't take advantage of that feature in the Xbox version.

That List clearly misses Mother 3 :-)

The development for it started back in 1994 already when it was planned as a SNES game first, shifted later to the Nintendo 64 and while the development of it was pretty advanced they cancelled it and finally released Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance in 2006.

But for "reasons" only in Japan till today. Am glad fans translated this awesome game.

Well guess Final Fantasy XV will be on the top 10 list when it finally comes out.

GearsOfWar3493d ago

Too Human was such a letdown for me. I had a lot of hope in it being a great game only to be presented with a mediocre experience at best. Still, I played it, only to be reminded of the lost potential.

I'm not sure if we'll ever get a sequel but I really hope time is better spent than on the original.

Where are we at on that silly half life 3 or episode 3 game.

Let's see Half Life 2 was 2004
Episode 2 was 2007

Seven years and not a single peep polygon or pixel. Looking forward to Day of Defeat 2 and Ricochet 2 before we see a 3 from Valve Time. Lol

L.A. Noire And Bully — Rockstar's Lost Gems That Deserve A Sequel As Much As GTA

Hanzala from eXputer: "I do appreciate GTA 6, Rockstar, but if I could trade it for a new L.A. Noire or a Bully game, I'd do so in a heartbeat."

Skuletor44d ago

How are they lost? You can get L.A. Noire on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch and Bully is on the PS5 and Xbox Series too.

Psychonaut8544d ago

I want a new Manhunt game. But that will never happen.

Mfs are too sensitive nowadays and would cry instead of being concerned bout real world problems

Demetrius44d ago

Whenever gta 6 launch we won't be getting another rockstar title for another 10 years lol but on the positive side they bou to come back n show how open world supposed to be done 🔥

Skuletor44d ago

I won't expect any singleplayer DLC like IV's The Lost & Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony after it launches either

One I never finished. I've been looking at the ps4 version off Amazon the last few months just never bit

Knightofelemia149d ago

It's worth playing LA Noire is one of my favorite Rockstar games. But I would also check out pawnshops or thrift stores if you want the game dirt cheap. Someone may have been dumb enough to dump the game.

Baffles me when people have these opinions about acclaimed games 😂

RhinoGamer88149d ago

100% agree... not perfect, but an engaging/refreshing experience.

sagapo149d ago

Agree, at time of release those facial expressions were amazing! They still hold strong even today imo.
The game on its own was good. Something fresh, but sidequests were a bit meh after a while.

Nacho_Z149d ago

I picked it up on sale recently, going to play it next summer. I'll get more out of it this time, first time around I treated the open world like it was GTA and goofed about, whereas now I'll play it with more respect. RDR2 has trained me well.

I also hadn't read Raymond Chandler at the time so presumably that'll add another layer of enjoyment too.

1nsomniac149d ago (Edited 149d ago )

Absolutely stunning game. So underrated. Played through it again last year and it still stands up so well. Like many of rockstars games it’s actually a far better experience on PC. I didn’t enjoy it as much on console. Completed it at least 3 times on pc.

The rumours of a sequel are awesome news despite the fact I think Rockstar are now the shell of the company they once were.

SyntheticForm149d ago

Team Bondi made a hell of a game.
