Until cod gets onto gamepass day 1 it's really just theory that it will hurt the overall sales I guess we will find out.

Zeref7h ago

I think it will hurt physical sales a bit. But CoD makes the most money from microtransactions. I'm sure the amount of people that are gonna play it on gamepass will be offset by the amount of new people buying MTs

Einhander19725h ago

But that increase needs to offset the loss in physical sales. CoD has been a big seller that has retained it's price much better than the average game.

And just like any game with dlc and mtx the majority of players don't buy it, it's the big spenders that really generate revenue, so the idea that by adding it to Game Pass is going to increase spending on mtx will likely not pan out as well as people hope. On top of that Microsoft currently gives away content updates for most of their games so presumably no more selling things like zombie mode.

So far nothing has really gone the way Microsoft envisioned it would, I think this will continue going forward.

romulus234h ago

Those people who would have spent $70 to buy the game would still be the same ones spending more money on MT's so there is no offset, it will be a loss of sales that they would have acquired if the game was not on gamepass..

DarXyde4h ago

But the question then is what do consumer spending habits look like on rented games?

-Foxtrot6h ago

It’s rumored there’s going to be new tiers to Gamepass added when COD hits. So most likely the most pricey one will include newer COD titles.

Chevalier4h ago

How much you thinking? $25-30 a month is what Xbox will want for this new tier?

I actually think they pull something like Amazon Prime and you end up with Gamepass and buy a COD pass separately then they bundle both.

purple1014h ago

They will add modern warfare 3

But yeh gulf war, is going to incur a price rise, pretty sure

Name Last Name4h ago

It’s a gamble but I think they have to do it. Release COD on GP to see if it grows. Otherwise, GP will definitely not grow.

1Victor4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@prof: “Until cod gets onto gamepass day 1 it's really just theory that it will hurt the overall sales I guess we will find out.”
I wonder what the FTC have to say about that because that was part of the issue in the buyout suit.
If it goes D1 on game pass they’ll have to offer it on PlayStation as well unless the GP owners will have to buy it, ether way Microsoft screwed up badly

4h ago
Lightning774h ago

I think that's why they wanted Sony wanted to sign a deal to have COD on PS. PS will take most of those sales if we're being honest. Being on GP will generate the most players and possibly GP subs. Something Xbox desperately needs.

romulus234h ago

If they bring it to gamepass it will most assuredly be a day one offering as that is their hook for gp. If or when it does it will absolutely hurt overall sales.

gold_drake4h ago

not sure if its a theory, if something is made available for what, 14 money instead of 70?, then people will get it for that price im sure. most of them anyways

crazyCoconuts3h ago

I think if your average player would spend more on the MTs than the game cost, Activision would have gone F2P by now. The Activision CEO went on record saying he though putting COD on GamePass was "value destructive" or something like that. COD is like the only game out there that tons of people pay full price for EVERY YEAR, which is an amazing position to be in. If anyone can mess this gravy train up, it's MS though...

Kaii7h ago

Will this succeed or be a massive trainwreck, place ya bets people ^.^

CrashMania6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

It depends. Even on Xbox CoD still sold millions of copies, this will canabalise a large portion of those sales, potentially hundreds of millions in initial revenue. With the assumption being it'll get more players from GP buying MTs.

But with poor console sales, GP is hitting it's saturation point on console and stagnating, and with PC being very entrenched in steam with gamepass not being that popular there, without a bigger install base it's not really going to increase subs by very much even with CoD. Are people really going to jump ship to monthly to buy xbox's and sub to GP to play CoD especially when it'll probably sell 15+ million on PS5 anyway? I doubt it, but who knows I might be wrong, it'd certainly be a bit concerning if the sub count didn't move even slightly from the biggest FPS on the market being on there, it's a gamble though.

Releasing CoD on GP definitely make the service more attractive, but I question the impact based on what I mentioned above.

shinoff21836h ago

I don't think cod does this. You gotta sell your ps5, buy an Xbox subscribe, etc. I think most that want it on ps5 are just gonna buy it. I don't think it'll move many xboxes.

GamingSinceForever5h ago

GamePass is attractive for single player games that you are in and out of in short fashion. I do not see how it is beneficial for a game that you’d play for years.Better off just buying it outright.

Jingsing4h ago

If it makes more people use Game Pass that hurts everyone else trying to sell games on Xbox. So that is going to look selfish to other developers.

andy852h ago

I just don't see how it's getting more people on GP. COD is the game you buy to keep for a year or more. If someone's getting GP just for COD who doesn't already subscribe. Surely the only draw is COD or they would have GP anyway. It's costing them twice as much as buying the game outright

Few things:
1. Yes this is a good thing for subscribers as long as...
2. There is a rumor that the price will be going up and if this is true, a lot will be riding on what the upcharge winds up being.
3. A new GP tier may be coming as well. New COD may not be in every tier.
4. GP is still constrained by Xbox console sales. To mitigate this MS has a few options. Brining COD to Switch will definitely help future titles.
5. There is a huge chance that this also comes to PSPlus Premium. I assume this is the case because Microsoft stated that they wanted Sony to add it to Plus. The issue became the lost income Sony would incur in publisher fees. I assume this was the driving force behind the Plus price increase.
6. Doing this will obviously obliterate retail sales, but Microsoft and Sony both come out winning by building up their sub base (and then for MS they will feed off of PlayStation Plus). Sony could have also negotiated for MTX publisher fees.

FTC look so stupid right now

LOGICWINS6h ago

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they don't put COD Day 1, it would mean they were dishonest about Day 1 1st party games on GP. If they DO put COD Day 1 on GP, they'll lose a ton of sales.

I wouldn't want to be in Sarah Bond's shoes right now.

Eonjay5h ago

Losing sales wouldn't matter to them so much if they could build their sub numbers up. I still think they have a deal with Sony to bring it to Plus as well as proposed by Phil Spencer awhile ago.

Sciurus_vulgaris5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

COD mainly generates money from MTs and season passes.

Hofstaderman2h ago

This is the most accurate description of their situation.

Petebloodyonion4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I fully expect to see COD released this year on Xbox just to give a win for Xbox owners and in the hope of seeing a substantial increase in Gamepass users.
Actually, I expect COD to be MS's make-or-break game regarding GAMEPASS future for if this game fail to drive membership well nothing will.

As for pricing, I think the base game will be on Gamepass Ultimate but a new tier could see the light of day to include all Battle passes and some free skins.

Please, can Call of Duty leave awful Netflix-style menus behind

Call of Duty games used to be streamlined experiences, but COD 2024’s UI could be another nightmarish clutter of streaming tabs.

Let's just leave Call Of Duty behind.

anast18d ago

The isn't for you anymore.

BlackCountryBob18d ago

If we’re beating that drum, can we also stop forcing anyone who wants to play only the single player to download Warzone and all updates BEFORE they are then able to do another download from the menu of the single player campaign. I don’t see why I need 150gb of downloads in several ways to play the single player mode only from a bloomin disk which should have that campaign on it already.

DefenderOfDoom218d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The UI is confusing to me because I have not purchased a Call of Duty iin like 8 years .Only bought CoD MW3 because 3 of my friends I have known since to 70s are playing zombies . But I am used it now .

smolinsk18d ago

The UI is the least of the franchise many problems these days. But yes the UI is also terrible.

Players claim Fortnite ruined Call of Duty by letting in more corporate greed

Do you remember what gaming was like before Fortnite entered the gaming space? One of the biggest arguments was about loot boxes. Now we have conversations about crossovers, battle passes, and community outreach.

Idk. Loot boxes did disappear and battle passes and in game purchases are all cosmetic. We get free weapons and maps post launch, any gameplay affecting content. I could care less about all the cosmetics.
I absolutely hated the days where weapons were locked behind a less than 1% chance lootbox pull where it'd take 5+ hours to have enough tokens to do a single pull and lazy remastered/remake maps cost you $15 each wave or $50 for the season pass that you didn't know what you'd get and these maps were only available to those that bought it so you get a smaller pool of players match with.

Tacoboto28d ago

The "good ole days" are actually what drove me away from COD and Halo 3/Reach. Halo 4 becoming a COD-like drove me away from that only a week or so after it launched and I beat its campaign.

It sucked way back then, going a month or two without playing online-shooter-of-the-moment, and then needing to buy a $15 map pack to play with the majority of the population or your favorite playlist. The "community" rejecting Spartan Points in MCC killed that game's support, too. No revenue = no support, plain and simple.

Cacabunga28d ago

That headline could easily be something Spencer could have said 😅 I had to check if it was really an opinion piece

KyRo28d ago

As times gone on, the COD battle pass has got ALOT worse so they can push people to buy the more premium battle pass which itself is a huge rip off and nearly half the price of the base game.

The cosmetics can be fine but they've taken it to far to the point of no return. Why make a military themed game then have rabbits, dinosaurs, cats, rats & z list rappers as skins? You wouldn't add a Lamborghini to a fantasy RPG to replace a horse and you would never see Mario have limb dismemberment because they know what they are. COD is having identity crisis but kids and streamer but then all

franwex29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Call of duty can simply not copy the bad aspects of Fortnite? Or is that too out of this world? Like COD, a realistic shooter-just HAD to have Nicki Minaj running around? Or super heroes?

Inverno28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Exactly! Trends don't all need to be followed. Plus where Fortnite got somewhat better with it's monetization, Acti got worse. Or at least Fortnite has lended itself more to the wacky stuff, and has put more effort and quality into that stuff.

jjb198128d ago

I prefer the battle passes with free maps than the $50 season pass that divided the community. I definitely feel that Fortnite had some influence on CoD having loot boxes with Blackout being introduced in 2018 with Black Ops 4.

PRIMORDUS28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Actually Fortnite bullshit ruined Unreal Tournament. Epic are sellouts and I will never have that shitty store on my PC, fuck them and that shit bag Tim Sweeney. At least the community keeps the games alive, I still play UT2004.

StoneTitan28d ago

I mean cant really blame them for supporting the game that made them the most money and the most people player...ever?

Psychonaut8528d ago

Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance.

Ra303028d ago

100% correct! The makers of Call of Duty ran out of ideas long, long ago so they take ideas from other games like Ghost Recon, Fortnite and any other FPS game hat had success hell CoD remasters maps that they've remastered several times already then charge you again for it. Call of Duty is simply a cut, copy and paste and then put the $70 price on it every year. Activision and now Microsoft has been essentially remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare every year since it was released in 2007 its to the point it's worse than the sports game like the Madden, NBA and others yearly sports franchises.
@Psychonaut85 is spot on "Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance"!
