NEC Plans for 8X Blu-ray Recording

NEC has announced that they have begun shipping samples of their latest SoC (System on a Chip) for use in Blu-ray Disc applications. The chip, which has been named SCOMBO/UM2A, will support 8X reading and writing of Blu-ray disc media. Other improvements on the chip include a reduction in size of 20% and 33% less power consumption than the previous model.

They have also shipped the SCOMBO/UM2P, a read only version of the same chip has has 5X capability. Sample price for the UM2P is $14 and the UM2A is $19. Current plan is produce 300,000 units per month, increasing to 1,000,000 per month by the end of the year.
