Super Smash Bros. Then and Now: Pikachu

Bryan Dawson (Prima Games): At first glance, many Smash players wrote off Pikachu because it's small and doesn't have many traditional attacks, so it obviously couldn't be good. Of course, they were all wrong... at least when it came to the original Smash Bros. 64. Pikachu went from being the number one character in the original Smash to a more grounded mid-tier character in Melee, and then got a slight bump in Brawl. There have been some changes in the upcoming Smash Bros. title, but overall Pikachu looks to be on par with where it was during the Brawl era. Let's take a look at its evolution throughout the series.

I feel bad for Smash fans. Those guys have been trying to maintain the scene active for 20+ years and get nothing but hate from Nintendo.

RoseSapphire382d ago

Sakurai explains how he and Nintendo still don't understand how the internet works.

FTFY

Snookies12382d ago

Exactly, online play would be wonderful on Smash if Nintendo gave a crap about their online services. To be fair though, Nintendo's online offerings would be great if it were 15-20 years ago lol.

jambola382d ago

I've always said that Nintendo is either innovative and ahead of the curve
or 20 years behind, no in between

CrimsonWing69382d ago

I’m sorry, but if a game is MP then there’s no f*cking argument that can justify no online MP. What he says about competition being different from just playing with friends shows me how out of touch these people are.

It’s not until a new generation that understands things steps in to clean-house that we’ll see some evolution here.

Vanfernal382d ago

His argument is nonsensical. "You'd be limited to just playing people from your region". As opposed to being limited to playing people FROM YOUR COUCH!

CrimsonWing69382d ago

What I don’t get is how do you not have competition and experience the same issue if you have a friend that’s way better than you?

GoodGuy09382d ago

It's a big fighting game so online multiplayer is a must. Competitive smash is the only thing I see fun in these games anymore asides from the big character reveals, singleplayer is laughable and you ain't gunna have people over for couch gaming much.

If Nintendo makes a new smash, it needs a huge evolution for singleplayer/couch play to be enjoyable for me any more. But we all know they'll just do a deluxe edition for their next console lol. They really need to up their servers as well.

NotoriousWhiz382d ago (Edited 382d ago )

I can't imagine Nintendo producing a better smash game than ultimate. Roll it forward with a deluxe edition maybe with an extra character or two and call it a day.

Some other developers can try pushing platform fighters to the next level, because I don't think Nintendo is up to the task.

DarthZoolu382d ago

They already created a better smash brothers game than ultimate when they created melee

masterfox382d ago

he sounds more like is trying to justify Nintendo ineptitude to create a proper network infrastructure in order to Smash Brothers work properly online.

Don't care what anyone says, Smash isn't a traditional fighting game. May as well call Powerstone and Playstation All Stars fighting games. They're more of an arena fighter /party game.

NotoriousWhiz384d ago

You don't have to care what anyone says. It's not a traditional fighting game. But it is a fighting game.

gerbintosh383d ago

Not according to the creator, Sakurai. Link below

CrimsonWing69383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

I mean what makes them an arena fighter than say something like Tekken? Because there’s platforms?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21383d ago

because theres a bunch of pokeballs and other random stupid stuff on stage that you can use at your advantage and flying ultra super power ball that you got to chase on the stage to get your ougi LMAO.

CrimsonWing69383d ago

@NatsuXTheMaxspeed21

I mean what it sounds like is they took a fighting game and “added” unique mechanics to it to me.

When I think arena game I think of things like Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand or Virtual-On.

Smash to me is a fighting game, they have fighting game tournaments for it. It just doesn’t jive with me to call it “not a fighting game” because you have poke-balls and platforms or because it has 4 players at once duking it out.

Power Stone I’d consider a fighting game as well. Hell, if you google what it is everyone calls these games “fighting games”. So yea, they’re fighting games…

Immagaiden383d ago

What’s next, you gonna say Mario Kart isn’t a racing game?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21383d ago

oh its a racer but its not a realistic one like GT or Forza. only kids check for mario kart and smash .

Immagaiden383d ago

I didn’t say it was realistic. I said racing game. Does Burnout not being realistic make it not a racing game?

What does a demographic have to do with a genre? Do kids playing CoD make it any less an FPS? You see how ridiculous bringing up that subject is?

repsahj383d ago

"Only kids and kids at heart check for mario kart and smash".

-fixed!

FallenAngel1984383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

Nobody said it was a traditional fighter. Everyone acknowledges it as a platform fighter

PSASBR & Power Stone are fighting games, the former being a platform fighter and the latter an arena fighter

gleepot383d ago

You're correct, it isn't traditional. It's a fighting game though.

repsahj383d ago

Because if cute and lovable characters are fighting it's not a fighting game? XD As long there's a versus fighting, it is a fighting game.

MrNinosan384d ago

Including Smash Bros in a list of fighting games, is like including GTA in Racing games.

NotoriousWhiz384d ago

I hate to break it to you but smash bros has fighting game tournaments so it qualifies.

MrNinosan383d ago

"and here's how it competes against other fighters"

No, Mortal Kombat doesn't compete with games like Smash Bros? It's a different genre for a different audience.

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21383d ago

Anybody can host a tournament in their garage it doesnt mean it qualifies.

NotoriousWhiz383d ago

I'm going to assume you're not part of the FGC. However, I am, and I can tell you that there is a ton of overlap between people who play smash competitively and those who play other fighting games competitively.

Now for casuals, there is a lot less overlap between the two for sure.

PapaBop383d ago

While technically true, Leffen comes to mind, FGC and Smash community have always had a rocky relationship.

Thundercat77383d ago

And yet, If Smash Bros was over 80 million, you wouldn't be complaining. On the contrary, you would be bragging about it.

Immagaiden383d ago

Bad comparison. You do a LOT of things in GTA outside of a car while fighting is what you’re mainly doing in SSB

Ezio2048383d ago

Given the volume of games released, I would say Tekken has sold the best.

lodossrage383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

Yeah, that's a good point. Most of these games have parts to the franchise outside of traditional fighting games.

Like for example, with Mortal Kombat, do Special Forces, Mythologies: Sub: zero, and the Kollection count?

With Tekken does death by degrees or the tag tournament games count?

With Street Fighter, are we counting all the iterations of 2, 3, and 4? how about the ex series or alpha series?

There are a lot of variables at play here

Ezio2048383d ago

Even after including Tekken Tag, they have less titles compared to all MK and SF games.

CS7383d ago

Yeah, i realized that too. Very interesting.

Xenoblade Chronicles X needs a remake when Switch 2 comes out! The game was fantastic, and it looked great! Better than most Switch games.

It isn't going to happen though. Monolith soft said "it is way too big", and would be too costly. I would absolutely buy that again, especially a remake or even a remaster.

Xenoblade Chronicles X should have sold better.

Sgt_Slaughter544d ago

One of the games I'm grateful that I found in-stock at GameStop before they quickly cleared nearly all pre-PS4/One/Switch games from their stores.

Nyxus544d ago

Perhaps if the series sold a little more on Switch, it would be worth it to do a port. If only some of those Pokemon numbers went to Xenoblade...

Sirk7x543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

I don't see how it would be too costly for them, when even a 1:1 Switch port would sell far better than the Wii U version ever did. It'd sell a million copies easy. Also, it is kinda crazy how good that game still looks.

GotGame818541d ago

X looks better than the Switch Xenoblade games.

Profchaos544d ago (Edited 544d ago )

Thank you homebrew community for breathing life into the system Nintendo spent years trying to forget.

One of my favourite systems for homebrew along with the Xbox, vita and ps2

Sirk7x543d ago

Huge library of great games with a modded Wii U. Virtual console, including injections, emulation, Wii U, Wii and Gamecube games with Nintendont on vWii.

FinalFantasyFanatic543d ago

Please port Xenoblade Chronicles X, I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet since everything else pretty much got ported to the Switch.
