Destiny Review: VGFirst

Excerpt from the review:

"There’s a tremendous weight on Bungie’s shoulders; inadvertently or otherwise Destiny is anticipated by many as the definitive first person shooter experience of this new generation. Indeed every so often a game launches that flips our expectations on their heads and provides consumers with an experience we never even conceived possible. This is something Bungie’s previous franchise, Halo can certainly be credited with, and in turn it seems natural that the same appears to be expected from Destiny."

Monstar3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

lol the game is NOT a 9 in anyway, shape or form... its like a reskinned Halo/borderlands but worse

SG1_dapunisherX3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

even though halo is better, destiny still a fun game to play with your friends.. trust me watchdog was a big letdown

PudgeyBurrito3531d ago

Destiny is way better. Halo got worse and worse.. it's an okay shooter at best.

KAEM73531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

The Halo glorification is getting rediculous. It was a great game that shaped and influenced many shooters that followed. But to say "Halo was better and therefore Destiny is sh!t" is too much. (@monstar) Any reviewer is allowed their opinion you cannot decide it for others. In my eyes Destiny deserves a nine. Tons of fun, great co-op, slick, addictive and very polished. Only downsides are the story and repetitive objectives. The harder strikes in the later game (im level 18 now) are challaging and fun with friends. Making and executing a stragegy that works feels rewarding and is fun.

So much negativity, i think people let themselves get overhyped too easily

Volkama3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

@KAEM7 It isn't really ridiculous. This game is widely considered to be a superficial successor to Halo. That heritage has been leveraged to build up enthusiasm and hype, so the comparison is inevitable.

And Destiny falls short of Halo in the areas that are directly comparible (campaign, PvP).

Unfortunately those are the areas that players are exposed to first. You have to push through those before getting to the strikes and things that positively differentiate Destiny.

nX3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

I'm level 22 now and I can assure you that the real fun only starts at max level. The story is pretty weak as a whole but the endgame is fun and addictive. I would give Destiny a 8.8/10 overall, my expectations were a bit higher than that but it's a very good game (and much, much better than any CoD, Halo or Battlefield I played so far) in any case.
But let me add that I'm more of a a RPG-kinda guy than a shooter fan so Destiny appeals to me more than typical shooters. Also I can't stress enough how well the servers of this game run, not only aren't there any connection issues but you'll also always find other players instantly regardless of level or game mode... that's something I have not even seen in CoD before.

KAEM73531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

@Volkama: I agree with you on your explenation. The comparisons are justified and indeed inevitable and I know that. I just think that some/most Halo defenders are not looking at things objectively and tend to resort to shortsighted, harsh comments.

@Bloodborn: Thanks for the info! I suspected it would be like that, but I don't want to talk about anything I have not experienced first hand.

@PudgeyBurrito How it got worse when halo 4 was a better overall game with top amazing story, Can't wait to play halo 5

sobotz3531d ago

Because you said it on this site.. just try saying Killzone sucks, everyone will losing their mind

RadioActiveTwinky3531d ago

Halo 4 was not "amazing" it took all the things that made Halo "amazing" away. No longer was the story about the survival of humanity. No longer was their the need to push the survival of the human race through the sacrifices of the Master Chief.

Instead we got a love story between the chief and cortana. Loosing all the lore of what made Halo Halo to begin with. The story of Halo is that of how the human race did tragic and unspeakable things to survive (Spartan program). In the books cortana is not this person that seems John as someone that she "loves" but as a human that will do whatever it takes to keep humanity alive. Halo 4 dropped the ball in that department. The only reason it was good is because they decided to make Dr. Halsey work side by side with the prometheans.

RadioActiveTwinky3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

I didn't know borderlands had PvP in a dedicated 6v6 form. I also didn't know borderlands and Halo had multiple planet /world exploration

I also didn't know borderlands and halo had PvE public events in all the different worlds.

Hell I didn't even know halo and borderlands had a separate dedicated event section of 6v6 where your gear and stats actually had and impact vs the regular multilayer where everything is balanced in terms of damage and armor protection.
So in other words I didn't know both those other games had 2 different PvP game modes. Bringing Destiny To A Total Of 3 Different game modes.

SoapShoes3531d ago

Dude get over it, people like the game. Don't be such a sourpuss...

Mutant-Spud3531d ago

Cool, I've got Borderlands 2 and Reach, If I alternate betwen the two I'm sure my imagination can fill in the the rest. Destiny here I come!

DeadRabbits3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

Who took a leak in your cornflakes? From what I can see Destiny has a lot of potential to be great! I#m looking forward to seeing what Bungie has up its sleeves!

mcarsehat3531d ago

If people like the game themselves, they will agree with whatever high review there is. It is the reason why they are so high in heat, it's a way of the users to tell themselves that they are ok to spend on Destiny, they are just trying to convince themselves that they made a good purchase. It's sad really.

Swiggins3531d ago

"Well that's like...your opinion man..."

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter349d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell348d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig349d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast348d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g348d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka348d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

Father__Merrin348d ago

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai499d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface498d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard496d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
