Unreal Engine 4 Achieves Photorealistic Graphics That Will Leave You Speechless

YouTube’s member ‘koooolalala’ has been experimenting with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, and has released a number of videos showing off the incredible IQ that can be achieved with this engine.

I wish they would show us what it's possible to do in a game with all the AI and environmental components of a game, rather than a beauty tech demo. Lots of tech demos leave you wanting they would transition into a game but nope.

Nitrowolf23538d ago

There's tons of projects already showing it off (ganmes)

PLASTICA-MAN3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Fable Legends, Dead Island 2, Hellbalde, Without a Memory on PS4 and Sony Cambridge secret game on PS4 all use UE4 hence the next-gen graphics. Many other games from indies use UE4 (full fledged games not 2D games).

Edit: there are many more impressive demos than the ones in the video, here is one (that you can download adn play with if you have a beefy PC): http://vimeo.com/93246664

BISHOP-BRASIL3538d ago

@Plastica-man

Nope... That's just as static and artificial/indoors stuff with a controlled camera as the video here. That's the easy stuff, the brain can be easily fooled into seeing that kind of 3D render (with plenty of simetry, patterns and regular shaped familiar yet never seen objects) as real or photorealistic. But try a 3D model of a person, the best you could take out there, you can still spot it's a 3D render (even hollywoodian 3D renders are perfectly identifiable for what they are when not mixed in real photos and tons os post-processing and that doesn't even have fully computional animation as they touch each frame 'till perfection, now imagine where the tech stands with real time rendering on something as interactive as a game).

PLASTICA-MAN3538d ago

@ BISHOP-BRASIL, Nope for what? About the games I mentionned they really use UE4 and they are very impressive.

About the demo I provided in vimeo link (which anyone can test by downloading it) it is just a render demo of a swedish house. No one was talking about charcters models.

I really don't know what you are talking about, if you think the swedish house and its objects are an illusion, you can download the PLAYABLE demo here: http://vimeo.com/98625270

There are two versions, one with high assets, the other with low ones. (BTW I am using UE4, so I know what is real and what is not in this UNREAL engine).

Llf @816Finger

This could be the tech demo to GG next game, they've already came out saying they've reached photo realistic environments js...

DevilOgreFish3538d ago

VaporCell -"I wish they would show us what it's possible to do in a game with all the AI and environmental components of a game, rather than a beauty tech demo. Lots of tech demos leave you wanting they would transition into a game but nope."

Games can take years to make. even longer if it's coming from a small indie team. this video was made by one person.

mixolydian_id3538d ago

Throw in several 60,000 polygon character models...

Frame rate drops to 15fps

UltimateMaster3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Now try having 30 enemies that combat each other in real time.

Timesplitter143538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

exactly, and it's also really really easy to make clean, empty indoor areas look realistic. Nature scenes, city streets, characters, etc are what I like to see from tech demos.

Lennoxb633538d ago

Beautiful. This just gets me pumped about what Gears 4 will look like.

solar3538d ago

same can be said of the UC4 demo. and i agree with you, you can show off any engine with absolutely nothing going on and it looks fantastic.

BallsEye3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

How is he able to achieve it on gtx 670 is beyond me. I got a Titan and yet some games like to choke up a bit (sh!tty coding) but then, it's just a very simple scene with nothing going on. Unity engine demo looks amazing too, doesn't work all that great in a ready game. Still, mind blowing job considering beautiful GI and such low end card.

THEDON82z13537d ago

@VaporCell: Right...although I don't see it hardly as much as back in the day (playstation 1,nintendo 64 era). It still annoys me sometimes because as good as these engine's are its easy to crank the visual's to the max, without running AI,physic's,etc.I think the standard for showcasing an engine should be made to show when all assets are running..then we can see what the engine is capable of. Hell I remember when some developers had put three PS3 together and ran a ray tracing demo (but you never saw that in games)!

BlackWolf123537d ago

Increasing the graphical fidelity of environments is nothing compared to character models.

I am actually sick of all these engine renders, CryEngine 3 versions of this, Unreal 4 versions of that.

Who cares.

frostypants3537d ago

Plus to even run this demo at a good framerate you'd need an absolute beast of a rig. Typical dsogaming article though.

unreal engine just amazes me (when it's used right) like in gears of war, bioshock, batman etc....

the latest Unreal engine 3.5 is gorgeous, gears of war 3 looks amazing and colorful and so is bioshock infinite (especially on PC)

cannot imagine how awesome UE4 us going to be

imtheman20133538d ago

The Batman Arkham Knight gameplay is testament to that. Easily one of the most gorgeous looking games I've seen...

PLASTICA-MAN3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Look how Batman Arkham Knight could have been if they used UE4: http://vimeo.com/76320449 (made by a fan not a dev in one week-end).

BlackWolf123537d ago

Unreal 3 looked too plastic.

XtraTrstrL3538d ago

Pretty cool. Fox Engine isn't that bad either, the P.T. teaser game is pretty damn photorealistic for realtime gameplay.

imtheman20133538d ago

I seriously just stood in P.T. and looked at the cigarettes and knickknacks on the dresser because it looked like I was just staring at a picture lol

PLASTICA-MAN3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

The Fox Engine has many features the UE4 lacks at this point but tries to add with each update or finds other ways to make sth similar to one feature.

PsylentKiller3538d ago

I was just about to say the same thing. Pretty soon these bull shots will become an actual playable reality.

frostypants3537d ago

Absolutely. It'll be a few more years though.

ape0073538d ago

the bananas, the meds, the cockroaches, all look very real

RevXM3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yeah PT looks good, a great amount of work went in to it but it is appearantly not same level as a release game. some lower res textures, its jerking a little at times and aliasing.

BUT the lighting, and the details as you said... amazing!
I stood around looking at that banana thinking it was too real for like 5 minutes because lets be honest its the most lifelike banana in a game we have ever seen!

starchild3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yeah, it really is a great engine. The P.T. demo looks amazing, except for a bit of aliasing that takes me out of it somewhat. With some really good anti-aliasing such as SSAA or TXAA that demo could look almost photo realistic or like a movie.

pwnsause_returns3538d ago

Yea...that was done on purpose apparently, to make it look like it was a "indie game" according to kojima apparently.

XtraTrstrL3538d ago

The aliasing in it is weird though. Some things from far have aliasing that's a little noticeable. It's not at all visible when you're close to things, and that slight blur that happens when you hit R3 to zoom in on stuff is really nice. Cuz it doesn't make things all muddily blurred, it's like a half blur like your character is a little dazed or something.

I've yet to play for more than a few minutes, shit was too scary. I gotta play again, I played for the first time last night with the Gold Wireless Stereo Headset and downloaded the 'Horror' preset from the headphone app for it. I didn't even play long enough for that bathroom door to fully open, just a little crack. The story of the family is jacked up.

WeAreLegion3538d ago

I can still talk, but it looks great!

MariaN4G3538d ago

I think the engine in call of duty looks quite better than this in my opinion.

cj1pate1013537d ago

"Call of Duty has been using the same game engine for over a decade-- in fact, it's been using the Quake 3 engine since before the current round of consoles even existed. Activision insists that if they used a new engine it would potentially cause them to miss a year, and since Activision doesn't want to explain to their investors why there is no Call of Duty for one year, that means not a whole lot changes in the franchise anymore, especially the engine."

Wow! That is badass. WB needs to make this happen now.

Right? Thanks for checking it out!

Fans??? This is done by one person

WoodsRatesGames1088d ago

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Gaming4Life19811088d ago

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

1109d ago Replies(2)
waverider1109d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1108d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1108d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1108d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1108d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1108d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Tghood851109d ago

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1108d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Amplitude1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Edit: i misread this.
N4G really needs a delete comment button lol

Einhander19711107d ago

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
