The Golf Club: 1080p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One, "Couldn't Get FPS We Wanted At Higher Resolution"

GP: PS4 vs Xbox One Resolution-gate ghost re-appears and this time around via HB Studio's upcoming golf golf simulator, The Golf Club. The game will run at 1080p on Playstation 4 and 720p on Xbox One, as per the details we received from HB Studios' LorinB.

For those of you wondering, this is actually a very good golf game. I played the PS4 version at E3 and immediately bought the early access version on Steam. It's great! I highly recommend it to any fan of golf or really just anyone looking for a fun game to play around with. We will be able to create our own courses on the console version, as well. This guy is trolling.

It does look good. The draw distance is very nice. That trailer doesn't do it justice though.

I'm going to take a little bit of high ground and say I'm sure both parties will enjoy this game, but I will add that I hope those stupid 'looks like we're getting closer to parity, hur dur' articles will stop.

Just because a cross-gen game has the same resolution (ignoring the huge list of other potential graphical enhancements the PS4 version could have) doesn't magically mean both consoles are now on the same footing performance wise.

The PS4 is more powerful than the xbone. I would like it if everyone can just accept that (and none of this "only slightly more powerful" nonsense) so we can go back to the games. Please.

Wolfenstein is cross gen. You'll note that a large percentage of 1080p games on Xbone are.

PS. Wolfenstein has a highly variable resolution, getting as low as 960x1080 on Xbone, so...not even really a good example.

With the exception of one game (i.e. Wolfenstein) all the games haven't been released yet.

So, pay attention to this:
- BF Hard-line 1080p 60fps
They said they are targeting... However, currently the BETA game plays on PS4 at 900p. So it is a long run for Xbox to achieve 1080p.

- Wolfenstein 1080p 60fps
It has dynamic resolution and the Xbox One can drop it to an extreme of 960x1080 in some scenes (this is equivalent of 720p). The PS4 can fall as low as 1760x1080 (it is a big difference)

- Destiny 1080p 30fps
BETA was played in 900p. They announced that the final version will be 1080p but we don't know whether the frames will be stable.

- Diablo 3
Currently the resolution is 900p. They indeed announced that will be patched at 1080p but again we do not know whether the frame rate will be stable.

- FH2 and The Crew
They will run at 1080p but it is very important the performance!

Did you see the performance of Xbone in Sniper Elite 3? Even if the game ran at 1080p it had: inconsistent frame rate; screen tearing; missing ambient occlusion etc.

I could also say that my laptop play all the games in 1080p. However, after I will say that the majority of them are running below 20fps it will not matter anymore, right?

So I would suggest to wait until the games are out and only after we should discuss.

Lol, to be fair i am a programmer, although still in the learning phase. I already launched a game on Android (Courage ball), point is i know how to code. The reason i called these guys lazy is because, there are plenty of devs whom are smaller and yet can get better results than HB got. Considering the fact that this game is definitely not graphically demanding. They got the minimum result of 720p and 60fps, instead of going the extra mile they decided to let it be, probably because they were aware of the Resolution gate. Does not mean the games gonna be bad, though for me personally it seemed a little lazy.

You can make a single tree in a forest from 3 terabillion triangles so that if you have nothing but that single tree on your screen with 1080p your setup will choke, crash and burn.

The fact that it's a golf game means nothing. Draw distance alone is a good power consumer unless the game looks like crap which it clearly does not.

It's got something to do with 60fps
Any game(more so an action game) that tries 60fps on XBone comes crashing down on the resolution

The 900p games you talk about are mostly 30 FPS games
With the new SDK however as seen in destiny
XBone is finally capable of doing 1080p at 30fps on new games

But 60fps is still a test that it hasn't passed & will pass with games like Advanced Warfare ,BF:Hardline or MGS5 TPP

Wolfenstine is the only game that did 1080p@60fps on XBone
But resolution there wasn't native & used some sort of frame buffer technology where resolution dropped in frames to keep up with frame rate

Wolfenstine doesn't hold that resolution. But Forza 5 is a true example of 1080p60.

Forza uses forward rendering though, which is a lot kinder on the frame buffer. Most modern engines use deferred rendering (or a hybrid method that leans towards it), which bloats the frame buffer above the capacity of ESRAM.

If a game is using deferred rendering and the dev is trying to stick the full frame buffer in the ESRAM then the result is going to be something like we're seeing with The Golf Club.

But hardcore action games where frames are much more dynamic is where Xbox fails the test

Obviously if a skilled developer was handling this golf game it would hv done at least 900p@60

I'm trying to see the part in the interview the developer directly states that the Xbox One is running 720p. The only mention of performance is in relation in the framerate being trageted at 50 frames instead of 60 frames because he believes that the human mind can't tell the difference between 50 and 60. They are shooting for 1080p on both - it will propably be more in the area of 900p on XB1 when it releases. I highly doubt it will be 720p - if it is then that is a dev issue as there are many other games pushing more with higher rez counts.

When you can get a 1080 battlefield hardline running on the X1 but only 720 for this game, you know it's on the devs. But I will say it was probably almost effortless to get it at 1080 for the PS4 as opposed to the Xbone.

I am more bothered by the notion that a console which can, does and will hit 1080p 60FPS on games has developers which have a tough time doing it.
