A New Era for Club Nintendo

From GamesReviews

"There seems to be a changing of philosophy at Nintendo with regards to their Club Nintendo program. As the company begins to offer up purchase incentives - free AAA with the purchase of Mario Kart and free Ganondorf DLC for the purchase of Hyrule Warriors - and more digital content, it would not be surprising to see Nintendo phase out physical rewards."

Hopefully it could save Nintendo

ShadowNextGen3578d ago

We are fortunate that Nintendo doesn't need to be saved.

DanManDantheMan3578d ago

We could be talking about tacos and, somehow, someone will still find a way to spin the topic into a "save Nintendo" topic.

Chrischi19883578d ago

A world of haters... they dont even understand how stupid this all is^^

admiralvic3578d ago (Edited 3578d ago )

I read articles like this and wonder if people do any research. For instance, is the author aware that Nintendo has been offering bonuses here / there for specific titles for years?

The first one I recall was the free OoT OST with OoT 3D (easily better than some stupid costume DLC) and over the years there were the Kirby cards (raffle prize if you registered Kirby Collection), complete set of Kid Icarus cards (raffle prize if you registered KI), double points with purchase of Luigi U digitally, plus a chance to win a Luigi pin and maybe a few more that I am forgetting.

The same is true with the free game promotion (I think calling Wii Party U a AAA title is REALLY pushing it), since back when the Pikachu 3DS XL (this was over a year ago) came out they did a buy a 3DS XL + Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and get a free game promotion, then a buy SMT + FE and get $30 in eShop credit promotion, then a buy a 3DS / 2DS / XL and select game for a free game promotion. Sure Mario Kart 8 was a simpler promotion, though one could argue that it wasn't a change in planning, but actually a calculated plan to drive sales of Mario Kart 8 (something that totally worked).

So right now the only difference between Club Nintendo from a year or two ago is that they're offering twice as many digital games, costs have inflated (some games cost 100 more coins than they did in the past) and this years elite rewards were all digital (some suspect this wasn't part of a plan to move to digital, but simply to reduce program costs). Either or, nothing they're doing here is unique to things they've done in the past.

DanManDantheMan3578d ago

Yeah, nothing has really changed.

AdamRoffel3578d ago

Of course there have been past promotions. I'm can also think of the 2DS + select game registration and get Pokemon X or Y free (again a recent, fairly huge, promotion). But, what was happening before was that there still was plenty of physical reward options available. Now, we have but a few.

The new philosophy is going primarily digital. So while the K.I. and Kirby cards were bonuses, they weren't digital incentives like Pokemon X/Y,free triple A title, or Ganondorf DLC. I'm not saying they've never done purchase incentives, and I'm not saying they have never done digital purchase incentives. I'm saying you are going to see a trend away from physical rewards, and an emphasis on digital. You will also see numerous digital purchase incentive rewards going forward as well, to keep Club Nintendo worth it for most fans.

"But, what was happening before was that there still was plenty of physical reward options available. Now, we have but a few. "

This has ALSO happened in the past. Since coins expire on June 30th, most physical items tend to sell out and have sold out years before. Club Nintendo has also been historically slow to restock, so it's hard to say if they're phasing out physical items or just a repeat of previous events.

" I'm not saying they've never done purchase incentives, and I'm not saying they have never done digital purchase incentives. You missed my point ENTIRELY. I'm saying for something to be a trend, it has to be part of a pattern, which we haven't quite seen here.

Nintendo has been offering digital games for at least a year.
Nintendo has been doing GWP deals for at least a year.
Nintendo has offered different takes on early buyer / day 1 incentives (physical items, raffles, double points and now DLC).
Elite Rewards have declined in quality over the years and they offered a digital game as one of the original platinum rewards and games the past 2 years as gold rewards.

Then on the other hand we have reasonable explanations for what we're seeing.

Nintendo rarely adds physical items (been true since day 1).
Nintendo rarely restocks items and it can take months to happen (been true since day 1).
Last year we got a fair number (probably more than last last last year) of new physical items added to the store (5 different colored 3DS XL cradles, that Yoshi carry case thing, 2 different 3DS card cases, Yoshi shirt, Pikmin 3 tote bag, Yoshi cleaning cloth, Animal Crossing posters, Zelda posters, 2 different Animal Crossing bags, Luigi figure).

Like I mentioned above, nothing here falls outside of already established patterns. The lack of physical items can easily be explained by points expiring, Nintendo's woeful history of adding new items and historically taking months to restock previous rewards. Elite rewards could be a result of too many people hitting platinum to justify the cost of physical items or some sort of logic like the back office seeing how many people liked the games being offered and decided to offer them instead of costly physical items. The DLC promotion could be linked to past promotions like I mentioned and more Koei's influence than NIntendo's (I can't think of a single Nintendo game that had preorder DLC, yet Hyrule Musou does and retailer exclusive ones at that) and so forth. Considering its only been a little over a month since this year started, it's way to soon to say this is 100% the new direction of Club Nintendo or a new era.

PS3Freak3578d ago (Edited 3578d ago )

Good, I would prefer games or dlc over some physical thing like a blanket or towel or hat that takes up space.

RosweeSon3578d ago

This would be awful yeah let's spend our hard earned coins/stars on games that we can purchase with proper money anyway, uh no thanks I'll stick to buying the games I want and getting the Cool physical items might not be to everyone's tastes but a Wii classic controller in shape of a Snes controller, golden nunchucks, mario kart trophies and a Ball Game and watch remake, uh yeah I think I'll stick to the proper collectable stuff thanks not just digital offerings that can be bought here there and everywhere what's wrong with the collectable items?

MNGamer-N3578d ago

I agree, I like some of the collectible items. I hope they keep some sort of offering. I like free games though too, just meke them good games, the ones worth getting. Not the bottom barrel. Or give us eShop credit. I'd be happy with that.

MSBAUSTX3578d ago

I love how some people are acting like they are entitled to the FREE GOT DAM STUFF that Nintendo is offering. Anyone remember when you bought a game and the perk was that you got to play THAT GAME. Most of you now act like a developer owes you something because you chose to buy from them. Guess what, THEY DONT OWE YOU SHIT. You chose to purchase it because it was what you wanted. Just be happy with the fact they give you anything extra because there was a time when we all made less money and paid the same amount for the games and got nothing in return except the game we bought. No one is happy with anything anymore it is just give me more and give me more attitude from everyone. So they are giving DLC or digital games away. Who fu**ing cares. It is free games for something you were going to buy anyways! Idiots. Talk about looking the gift horse in the mouth. I swear you guys would complain about a free lap dance giving you too huge of a boner.

AdamRoffel3578d ago

Not sure if you are referencing the article or the commenters, but as the author...this article isn't a complaint at all. Thanks for reading.

I am targeting the commenters and their BS entitlement complexes. Article is cool.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot346d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr345d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt346d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
