Rise of the Tomb Raider's Exclusivity will Kill the Franchise

From GamesReviews:

"Tomb Raider was a heavy hitter once, a long time ago. The first three games are almost synonymous with PlayStation nostalgia, but that was years ago and the time since has been filled with mediocre sequels and disappointing attempts of modernizing the franchise. Tomb Raider, the second reboot for the first lady of gaming, was a step in the right direction, but today's announcement that its sequel will be "100% exclusive" to Xbox One might just kill off the franchise completely."

MS must have paid some real good money for this, this decision for square does not make any sense, MS must have made a deal too good to refuse for them not keep this "exclusive"

matgrowcott3548d ago

Tomb Raider struggled at launch because of how much money Square put into marketing. I'm wondering if Microsoft has offered to cover the advertising on top of a basic fee. That'd make the at least 50% drop in sales worthwhile to them, because they wouldn't need such a long tail of sales to make the game profitable.

That makes sense to me, but it'll still kill the franchise long term.

iamnsuperman3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

I understand Square Enix not wanting to pay the marketing cost and get a small bonus fee but the ramifications of making it Xbox one only is huge. It barely made even across multiple platforms and the current gen version sold a lot more on the PS4 than One (just looked it up it was double). This could not be just a simple 50% loss. It could be a lot more. Maybe square Enix thinks they do not want to take the risk but they have anyway

matgrowcott3548d ago

@iamnsuperman

Oh yeah, I don't really see how it works out in terms of the future. It's just the only way this decision actually makes sense to me.

The reboot did well over 5 platforms and, what, a year and a half? Square are banking a lot on day one sales and that shiny feeling of being an exclusive.

CrippleH3548d ago

SE is doing a great job in burying TR's popularity with this move.

It'll be over a 50% drop in sales.

GiggMan3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

Like I said before they are setting themselves up to compete directly with Uncharted and the fanboys are going to go wild.

That in my opinion is not wise. Dante's Inferno did it against God of War 3 and Prototype did it against iNfamous. Those didn't turn out too well.

Gazondaily3548d ago

Well if its timed then it'll be a quick cash injection that will benefit them the following year. I would have made that deal if I were struggling financially.

tbone5673548d ago

I hope this becomes an exclusives MS franchise. Tomb raider 3 4 5 6 7 all on Xbox one and Two.

nunley333548d ago

Maybe SE didn't wanna go head-to-head against Uncharted 4. This will give SE another 6 months to polish up the superior PS4 version. SE was already making the ps3,PS4,360 versions. In the original announcement for this game PS3,PS4,360 were versions were announced too. They'll sit on these and maybe polish them up hopefully in the mean time.

NatureOfLogic_3548d ago

Why release exclusively on your worst performing platform? PC and PS4 had better sales. That's the majority of your fanbase gone for a quick buck.

Baccra173548d ago

You're absolutely right. SE thought the first Tomb Raider didn't sell enough so you're going to make an exclusive, which game companies always tell us sell less than multi-plats, on a system that is being outsold by a large margin?

Enemy3548d ago

Square-Enix was already having financial troubles. This will only make things worse for them. They're burying their own franchises. The reboot even sold better on PS3 globally.

DualWielding3548d ago

well that may be the reason they may have been in desperate need for cash NOW which Microsoft offered

Anon19743548d ago

Makes no sense at all to me. Like Enemy mentioned, the reboot of the franchise sold much better on the PS3 than the 360. Surely the money Microsoft paid isn't worth what they'll lose by ignoring the biggest current gen install base.

I guess time will tell. Wonder if investors are going to punish the stock once it starts trading in Tokyo again. Certainly on the surface this fails to make any financial sense whatsoever.

lsujester3548d ago

Makes it worse when you look at where the games sold. A huge portion was in Europe, where X1 isn't doing very well at all in many parts.

truefan13548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

Business is about balancing risk with profit. They barely made any money by selling across multiple platforms, now they have minimized their risk and already secured some guaranteed income by offering it as an exclusive to MSFT. For example DR3 sold 2.2 million at a time when there were only 4.5 million XB1's that is almost a 50% attach rate, that's a darn good number. Now TR will be given more exposure for the Holiday 2015, instead of battling uncharted on the same console. Halo and TR are good compliments to each other.

Muzikguy3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

I'm struggling to see how PS gamers rent and resell their games more. Every video store I walk in has almost double the wall space for 360 rentals. Also any time I go to Gamestop, their used games section for Xbox has just as many games as Sony's side. The gamefly comparison might just mean there are more PS systems out there? Just my thought

ThatOneGuyThere3548d ago

Your second paragraph is pulled straight from your butt. If Tomb Raider was released on XB1 and PS4, the PS4 would outsell the XB1 version, just like every other multi-plat this gen.

Testfire3548d ago Show
Magicite3548d ago

DR3 sold so poor, it will be ported to PC, same goes for Ryse and upcoming X1 exclusives.

G20WLY3548d ago

DR3 only achieved that attach rate due to there being only a handful of games available at launch.

Do you really think it would achieve a 50% attach rate if/when Xbox reached, say 20m sales?! Tomb Raider certainly isn't going to, I'd wager...

SmielmaN3548d ago

Don't even respond to this trufan guy. He makes a idiotic, ignorant comment, gets torn in the first few responses, then stealth edits his comment so he doesn't look incredibly fanboyish and ignorant. He's wasting our bubbles guys. Not worth it. Last bubble I ever waste on this mega troll

GiggMan3547d ago

DR3 might have sold 2.2 million but it was one of only a few games to choose from at the time. When tomb raider comes out it will be buried amongst other games.

I think its simple. PlayStation has Uncharted. What does MS Have? .... Well, they've got Tomb Raider now. Definitely paid a pretty penny for it too. Its sad that it won't sell too great on that system. (everyone will be busy with halo for the next 5 years)

AceBlazer133548d ago

It is baffling that square went through with this after seeing how weak sales were for games on the XB1.To ignore the largest next gen user base is just stupid.

On the upside, Microsoft is gonna try to buy their way out of this hole and eventually crash and burn Xbox.

gazgriff2k123548d ago

square need money double fast like now. Would nintendo or sony give millions of $$$ to square for tomb raider exclusivity HELL NO! that only leaves desperate ms and the failing xbone. (the game will only be timed exclusive)

TheFallenAngel3548d ago

For real. Most of the sales came from playstation. But let the Xbox guys enjoy the game. I'm pretty sure it will be a good one.

ThatEnglishDude3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

Square are known for poor decisions - but yes, I fail to see the logic in this as well. You have a game, released on 3 platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) that sells a LOT, but still fails to meet the expected sales quota. So with that, you release the game again on current platforms (PS4 and Xbox One) and the results come in and you discover the PS4 outsold the Xbox version 7:3. You finally make your sales quota and get the greenlight for a sequel. You then decide to release said sequel on only one platform, and not only that - the platform which is being outsold by its competitor 3:1 and bought you the fewest sales. On top of this, you alienate an exceptionally large part of your fanbase, you piss off fans of the franchise who have been around since it's original Saturn/Playstation release in 1996-1997, as well as run the risk of causing further financial damage to your company by limiting yourself to one platform.

User base aside, why would you reboot a beloved franchise, release a game that receives a very positive reception from critics and non-critics alike - only to have the sequel be exclusive? It just doesn't make any sense. It BEGS an explanation. Especially when the option to preorder the game on all platforms was available this time yesterday. If Microsoft ARE co-developing the game with Crystal Dynamics - this should have been disclosed from the very beginning.

I wouldn't wish anyone out of a job, but I would be pressed to feel any sympathy should the worst happen. It's not even because I'm unable to play the game, it's just the principle of it all. The backlash this news has received is far bigger than I was expecting. I don't even think a later (inevitable?) PC/PS4 release would make things better at this point, either. The damage has been done.

Very disappointed by this shady, underhanded business practice. The only people that benefit from this are Microsoft. They'll no doubt shift a few units for this game - but the long lasting damage will always be there.

Exclusivity is one thing, but taking an already established franchise from a promising reboot series and making it exclusive to just one system is just plain bad business practice and leaves a very sour taste in the mouths of the mouths of the biggest user base your previous game had. Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, etc - that's fine! I'm sure they're going to be fantastic games. The difference is, they're original IP's with no history on any other platforms. It'll be like making Batman: Arkham Knight a PS4 exclusive. It'd be a dick move, to say the least.

That's about as eloquently as I can put it.

jimjam34423548d ago

as far as my money is concerned theyve destroyed their own franchise, ill never buy another crystal dynamics or square enix game again new. i say let the company burn like thq, give the rights to someone whos head isnt up their own ass.

ThatOneGuyThere3548d ago

It sounds like Square is run by liberals. haha

-Foxtrot3548d ago

Wonder if they want it to fail so they can do another reboot...I mean these guys were disappointed with the first games "low" sales. Greed at it's finest.

XStation3548d ago

The money MS probably paid them probably completely offset the money they didn't earn.

KonsoruMasuta3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

No company would spend millions developing and marketing a game if they wanted it to fail.

-Foxtrot3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

The money Microsoft is giving them might cover that or most of it...who knows

Baccra173548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

Probably want to fail so they have an excuse to make Tomb Raider free to play.

@konsorumasuta - Fuse says hello, DmC says hello, and Resident Evil 6 says HELLO.

KonsoruMasuta3548d ago

Those games are different. The companies didn't want them to fail.

The companies thought those game were going to succeed but they just ended up sucking.

No conspiracy behind it. Just a bunch of companies not knowing what their fans actually wanted.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9564d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro64d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot64d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist64d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx64d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188164d ago (Edited 64d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9564d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist64d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp64d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg64d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion64d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
