From GamesReviews:
"Tomb Raider was a heavy hitter once, a long time ago. The first three games are almost synonymous with PlayStation nostalgia, but that was years ago and the time since has been filled with mediocre sequels and disappointing attempts of modernizing the franchise. Tomb Raider, the second reboot for the first lady of gaming, was a step in the right direction, but today's announcement that its sequel will be "100% exclusive" to Xbox One might just kill off the franchise completely."
Tomb Raider I, II, III Remastered is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Lara Croft is back in a classic remaster of the original PlayStation 1 hit title. Is the remaster any good though?
We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.
For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.
I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.
Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
Like the film or television industry, the world of gaming has seen its fair share of reboots over the years. While some of these video game reboots have had
MS must have paid some real good money for this, this decision for square does not make any sense, MS must have made a deal too good to refuse for them not keep this "exclusive"
It is baffling that square went through with this after seeing how weak sales were for games on the XB1.To ignore the largest next gen user base is just stupid.
On the upside, Microsoft is gonna try to buy their way out of this hole and eventually crash and burn Xbox.
Square are known for poor decisions - but yes, I fail to see the logic in this as well. You have a game, released on 3 platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) that sells a LOT, but still fails to meet the expected sales quota. So with that, you release the game again on current platforms (PS4 and Xbox One) and the results come in and you discover the PS4 outsold the Xbox version 7:3. You finally make your sales quota and get the greenlight for a sequel. You then decide to release said sequel on only one platform, and not only that - the platform which is being outsold by its competitor 3:1 and bought you the fewest sales. On top of this, you alienate an exceptionally large part of your fanbase, you piss off fans of the franchise who have been around since it's original Saturn/Playstation release in 1996-1997, as well as run the risk of causing further financial damage to your company by limiting yourself to one platform.
User base aside, why would you reboot a beloved franchise, release a game that receives a very positive reception from critics and non-critics alike - only to have the sequel be exclusive? It just doesn't make any sense. It BEGS an explanation. Especially when the option to preorder the game on all platforms was available this time yesterday. If Microsoft ARE co-developing the game with Crystal Dynamics - this should have been disclosed from the very beginning.
I wouldn't wish anyone out of a job, but I would be pressed to feel any sympathy should the worst happen. It's not even because I'm unable to play the game, it's just the principle of it all. The backlash this news has received is far bigger than I was expecting. I don't even think a later (inevitable?) PC/PS4 release would make things better at this point, either. The damage has been done.
Very disappointed by this shady, underhanded business practice. The only people that benefit from this are Microsoft. They'll no doubt shift a few units for this game - but the long lasting damage will always be there.
Exclusivity is one thing, but taking an already established franchise from a promising reboot series and making it exclusive to just one system is just plain bad business practice and leaves a very sour taste in the mouths of the mouths of the biggest user base your previous game had. Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, etc - that's fine! I'm sure they're going to be fantastic games. The difference is, they're original IP's with no history on any other platforms. It'll be like making Batman: Arkham Knight a PS4 exclusive. It'd be a dick move, to say the least.
That's about as eloquently as I can put it.
Money numbs the brain
Wonder if they want it to fail so they can do another reboot...I mean these guys were disappointed with the first games "low" sales. Greed at it's finest.
