As beloved as it is, certain aspects of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee have aged about as well as a wet mummy. Clunky controls, unadjustable harsh difficulty, and graphics that are hideous when scaled up to HD resolutions mean high barriers to entry for newcomers, which make it harder to discover one of the most memorably imaginative games of the late '90s. Thankfully, it's a lot easier in Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty.
Starting today, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is free at Epic Games Store. The free game offer runs until December 19 at 11 AM Eastern. Once you claim it, it’s yours to keep.
"If you're a 2D puzzle adventure aficionado who doesn't already own Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty on one of the half dozen consoles that it's currently available for then it'll make for a worthy purchase but those who do have it will find little reason to get it again on Switch." - A.J. Maciejewski from Video Chums
WTMG's Heidi Hawes: "All Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty! managed to do was frustrate me. However, it did make me appreciate the controls in Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee more. Honestly, if you’re new to the franchise, it might even be better to just skip ahead to Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. At least those gameplay mechanics feel like something more from this era. That being said, if you’re a die hard fan of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee or perhaps just a glutton for punishment, then perhaps try your luck with Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty!."
Review was a little harsh IMO. The point of a remake is to give you an older game with a newer flare. So I feel it is a little unfair to take points off for what you feel are flaws in the original game. Remakes should be judged on how well they present an old game as new. The co-op complaint is a good one though. Taking turns is a little too outdated to be called co-op IMO.
"Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a beautiful remake that irons out nearly all of the problems and limitations of 1997’s Abe's Oddysee while bringing its best qualities to the fore. This ground-up remake looks and feels fresh enough to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any modern 2D platformer — evidence that Abe's Oddysee really was ahead of its time."
This is all I needed to know. Confirmed my expectations. Can NOT wait to play this!
Wow great remaster.
Day One when this bad boy hits the Xbox One.
I never played any Oddworld game, looks awesome, still want to play Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD.
