The Last of US PS4 vs PS3 Comparison Animated GIF Shows Vast Visual Improvement

Today Sony Computer Entertainment published a new video of The Last of Us Remastered and of course it prompted comparisons with the PS3 version of the game.

That's the kind of differences you usually see when you increase resolution. I'm used to seeing these differences on multiplats when going from console to PC with higher native resolutions.

Still, the game is gorgeous and will look a lot better at native 1080p and running at 60fps.

Everything overall is better. Sharper textures everywhere; The tree trunks, rocks, leaves on the floor, Ellie's clothes, face and hair. Snow and physics on her hoodie appears to be flowing smoother as well. I can also tell the draw distance is clearer and sharper in the PS4 version. All that and yes, 60 FPS.

The entire ps3 version is quite blurry, looks like its being viewed through plastic film. It's possible to see quite a lot more finer details on the ps4 version as such.

No. You are just trolling. ND was very clear about this even before the PS4 announcement when they dropped hints about everything being built at higher polys and then downrezzed for the PS3. Add to this ND has been clear TLOU engine is the same one they use for the PS4. So, you now have failed doubly over.

There's a big difference... The rocks to the right on the PS4 look more dense with deeper darks and more texture detail, you can see the dampness and dew coating them from the snow, The leaves have more shape and you can make it out. The leather on Ellie's Jacket has more snow particles and its more apparent, along with her hair follicles, The background doesn't look so blurry, you can see farther. They've really done plenty with the game. and things look 2x as fast. in comparison.

I'm a PS4 owner and I think it's sad that the most important and over-hyped game to release for the PS4 in 2014 is a remastered edition of a game previously released on the PS3. Don't get me wrong, the Last of Us is a very good game but something is definitely wrong with this picture. Just proves that the PS4 exclusives released until now in 2014 weren't that great and that Sony has little confidence in the rest of PS4's exclusives to be released on 2014. I hope my PS4 has a better year in 2015.

I dont have ps4 yet but I had this game on ps3. I like it more than uncharted and will probably buy this game again on sale. I never played the DLC and also there is a harder mode for me to beat on ps4.

TLoU was a great game, it had it's faults but which games don't? However this is why great games are so few and far between. People go mad for remastered ones. Seriously, if the companies know they can sell old games at better resolutions for full price over and over again, is it any wonder why things like COD and Battlefield get released practically every year with very little difference in the previous version.
Come on people I thought gamers were supposed to be smart, and against this sort of repackaging.
If visuals are all you care about then what's the point? you may as well go watch a movie...games are supposed to be about gameplay and interaction - and as far as I'm aware this hasn't been changed in the remastered version. I can understand those who didn't have a PS3 or just didn't buy the game the first time around, but for those who did - why spend full price on another copy of a game you've owned previously. That's just wasting your money, and sending the wrong message to the developers.
If they had changed more like; improved AI, new chapters, improved mechanics, additional weapon options, more features then maybe I could see why buying it again might be worth it - although at full price it's still a stretch (I would be expecting a significant discount as those new features could have been implemented with DLC).

It's driving me nuts how most people(obviously not you) seem to not realize all they've shown is cutscenes. The cutscenes were pretty significantly better, graphically, than the gameplay.

Naughty Dog has said that the gameplay matches the cutscenes. If people don't remember how the gameplay actually looked, they need to go back and play it to appreciate what the change will be.

I don't understand why they have not shown legit gameplay, however I've had my digital preorder since the day after it was put up on the store. I don't need gameplay, but if I hadn't already played it I would be very skeptical and unhappy with their decision to not show the game.

Anyway, I can tell that there is more detail on the right-hand side. And that's at that size of image. If it was a native resolution, you could tell right away.

But, those expecting to see something completely different are going to be sorely disappointed. This is about porting the game with higher resolution graphics, not reworked graphics and effects to take full advantage of the PS4.

Actually that's not true. Textures and other assets have been upgraded. It in fact is more than just a resolution upgrade.

I don't think we've seen a good indication of the improvements yet. Supposedly the gameplay is now cutscene quality, and we haven't seen gameplay yet.

You can see the differences with these gifs but it's all from cutscenes so the improvement won't be as dramatic as the gameplay, assuming they're being honest about that.

Ok The graphics have not been vastly improved? The resolution (video output) and Frame Rate is what has been vastly improved... not Graphics, and before you say "That's Graphics!", NO, it's not. Graphics are Textures, lighting, objects, shadows, draw distance, particle effects, etc.
The game already looks amazing, all it needed to really stand out is 1080p and 60fps, that is what makes it really shine now :)

Youtube has a dual purpose for some people. It seems to show there is little difference between 1080p and 720p and it seems to show that certain games haven't improved. Think about that for a few moments just to get a handle on why these two are not good bedfellows.

The issue with gifs and images, is you can't really see how big a difference the game is when in motion uncompressed on a 1080p screen. I think that's always been an issue it trying to explain and show just how big the difference is between 720p and 1080p.

Gif isn't the best way to show it either. 1st they scaled it down- so differences in resolution are lost completely, and you can't fully appreciate the differences in texture.

also gif only supports 256 colors, so that alone massively cuts down the image quality.

We have a low resolution gif here, how can you judge what the game looks like from this? No one has any grounds at all to doubt the talent, love and passion that Naughty Dog put into their games, they are not the kind of company to just bung a title out of the door willy nilly.

There is only one reason people can have for justifying their negativity for this title and it has everything to do with there own irrational dislike for Sony.

Those that argue that remasters are a bad thing in general are also misguided in my opinion, if a game doesnt interest you then dont buy it, but there is no way more games to choose from can ever be seen as a bad thing.

Here's the thing...yes the upgrade is noticeable, but these are cutscenes. I'm thinking we really want to see how the upgrade has impacted the gameplay visual element. That's the type of video everyone craves.
Many have stated "jaggies" or "blurred" for the PS3 version...sorry but my PS3 version is mint, and those descriptors are non-exsistant for me. Don't know why gamers start unnecessarily panning a game for the sake of hype.

Playing this on PS4 is the same as playing a last gen game on PC... it's not going to look much different other than some higher resolution textures and frame rate. Everything else will still look about the same as the PS3 version.
