It is always written about space 4X games, and it always makes me cringe in the ultimate cringe fashion. I was a fan of the first 2. Really want to play this but f*** spending $100 on it.

You don't have to spend $100 on it. Only if you want to have your own solar system, plus other perks, with Alpha and Beta access. When the game is released, you will get it like any other game. Its good though!
