PS3 MGS4 80gb Bundle sells thousands in Minutes, Kills Amazon in the process

Well, good job folks. We told you that amazon.com would sell the Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB bundle today. And you all listened. Thousands of you swarmed the site, got rid of their inventory in seven minutes, and best of all -- you killed amazon.com.

Demand for the Metal Gear bundle was so high, that the popular online retailer simply couldn't handle the traffic. If this is the fervor in just one store, imagine how well the bundles are going to sell when they release nationwide next Thursday.

Where is this articles references and sources? They list nothing. Amazon.com hasn't said anything (okay, so I guess that will give you a slimmer of hope that this is true). Reputable news sources (PC World, MarketWatch, CNN, etc) all have said that inquiries to Amazon.com have not been returned.

This story is lame, provides no proof and it just allows you all to sit there and think something is true when it's not.

I noticed the outage on Amazon this afternoon which lasted several seconds. I doubt it had little to do with the PS3 sales. Amazon is a huge site and can withstand the strongest of Christmas sales and lightening deals on a daily basis.

In my experience, even big servers can have crashes from things like this. I know many gamers who are buying this bundle as there first PS3. All I want to know is how many will be available from now until the end of June. I have no doubt they will sell every one of them.

Metal Gear Solid 4 "Welcome Boxes" are taking over amazon japan. They get to choose from white, black, and silver. As well as Gun Metal. There are 6 PS3 sku's in the top 100 on amazon japan. With the MGS4 game at number one.

There is also a voucher to download Pain for free (I previously didn't know this was to be included, so it was a shock to me to see THAT in there, too). I personally haven't played or DLed Pain, but it seems to be rather popular (given the amount of DLC they put on PSN for the game), so that could be a little inch in the right direction.

This site that reported it: PS3 Fanboy, is under the Joystiq umbrella. Joystiq recently also posted the Gamepro review of MGS4 in response to people wanting a multiplatform mag review of the game because they weren't satisfied with the PS-Only mag's reviews that they posted on there. Previously, it was obvious that Joystiq was one of those blog sites that was really about trashing the PS3 in every conceivable way (and PS3 fanboy never helped too much in cleaning up that image). They could've just tried to go about this game how Kotaku has, but they haven't. Either I'm missing something, or maybe Joystiq is starting to warm up to the PS3. If it's the latter, then...well, we'll see...I'm still skeptical about that, but if THEY are warming up to it, then the anti-PS3 lunatic fringe is in big trouble.

The ps3 is just killing this year in sales! This year, is the year of the PS3. MGS4 is going to sell more than 2 million ps3s this month. By the end of june your going to see a total of 15 million ps3s sold. The ps3 is going to outsell the 360 by mid 09 if not earlier. PS3s been outselling the 360 for more than 5 months. I bet another 1 million or more ps3s will be sold when killzone 2 comes out in feb 09. At least 2-3 million during the holidays. Hell, MGS4 is enough to outsell the 360 this year.

i know its not entirely relevant but can anyone tell me how reliable play.com are. i usually use amazon cos i have found them to be good at delivering stuff but i had to go through play for the mgs4 limited edition bundle. ive already had trouble with my account cos they said my credit card address was wrong (in the address field it would let you enter a "/" which is part of my address so i had to put a space instead and they said this wasnt my EXACT address!) so i had to use my mothers credit card ( i told her that mgs4 was medicine and/or in some way educational.....). Im just sh!t scared that theyll screw me somehow!!! its just paranoia but can anyone reassure me?

I've never had any problems and have used them and Amazon for years.

But now Shopto.net has become my favourite. Unfortunately can't get the bundle from there but all games I've ordered have arrived a day early, except GTA4 since R* had special restrictions on it. It's cheaper than Play and Amazon.

If you didn't need the bundle I'd recommend Shopto for all your games.

By bundle do you mean with a PS3 or just the LE version?

Play.com have never delivered any of my preorders to me on the day of release, usually the Monday after. Even on preorders I've had down for months in advance. It's why I moved to Shopto.

I use Play.com for electronics more than games now, less urgent things. But anyway, they won't mess you about with your money, just don't expect it to arrive in 5 days on MGS4 release day.

But Halo 3 had over 4 million in pre-orders. Not all of them were bundles, no,and it is a World Wide Number---- but come on, 4 million.

I dont doubt that this game will be great. I have played the previous 2 on my PS2 and the original MGS on my PSone, but I dont think its gonna sell as many copies as QUICKLY as your kids think.
I will borrow my brothers copy when he's done with it. If its that good, it wont matter when I play it, i'll still get a great experience.

And by the way, when ever ANY website gets a large influx of "traffic" it "shuts down". Hell, last year, 600 people bid at once on a General Lee replica that had been used in the Dukes of Hazzard TV show back in the day and --GASP, EBAY SHUT DOWN FOR AN ENTIRE 20 MINUTES.

MGS4 is a system seller, no doubt. Amazon is arguably the biggest online retailer so this is quite something when you think about it.

Those saying it may only be a few thousand, I think if Amazon have sold this many almost everywhere else will sell similar. Those that couldn't buy off Amazon will look elsewhere, spreading the word and demand.

Even if only 2000 people had bought the bundle, that's 2000 more people spreading the word to the people around them, a sort of gaming domino effect, resulting in more sales. Word of mouth is more effective than TV ads or online marketing.

MGS4 has the power to sell PS3's. It's proving it already. Those already with a PS3 who like MGS will have it on preorder or buy it on release so expect the MGS4 sales figures alone to hit a few million minimum. If Japan, Europe and the US all go for MGS4 in major numbers like this, this game should outsell Halo 3 in global sales. Afterall MGS has the extra region Halo never had, Japan.

Although MGS4 is the last in the series (With Snake) those with PS2's looking to upgrade will do so soon. If the majority upgrade before the end of this year, or more realistically the end of April 2009, PS3 and 360 will be very tight on sales.

MGS4 will no doubt be an incredible game, but it is not a system seller. The average console owner only has a vague idea of what the metal gear series is, if they have any idea at all. With the exception of hardcore gamers, nobody has any idea what the hell MGS4 is. Outside of Japan MGS4 won't sell a lot of copies, and it certainly won't sell any PS3s. You're acting like MGS4 is GTA4. Don't get me wrong, MGS4 will be a great game, but popular? No, not at all.

You do realize that the world will hardly stop even if, and that is a huge IF, MGS even manages to sell 1 million PS3's which by even the heartiest estimates it will not.

The Xbox still has great system selling titles coming out this year - Halo Wars and Gears of War 2. And some kick ass upcoming exclusive titles to keep us playing this year -- Left 4 dead, Too Human, Banjo-Kazooie, Fable 2, Huxley, etc.

I remember long ago when I was in the market for an Xbox 360 and they had a deal where you could get the Core pack for like $200. I was ready to buy, credit card in hand and code ready to enter. When suddenly the second the page changed for the sale, everything locked to hell and the site was killed. I was told EXACTLY when to be online for the deal in an email, and then the site crashed at that EXACT time. So if it crashed then for a barebones Xbox 360 console, I wholeheartedly believe this MGS4 bundled murdered Amazon's servers. Now they're using some lame maintenance excuse to cover their tails, but we all know what the truth is. ;)
