PSN - Let's Be Honest

There has been a lot of talk about what Sony is going to be giving us, with very little of the actual giving. The video store is rumored to drop at E3, HOME is rumored to be here in Fall, new and exciting content is rumored to be coming, and yet week to week, nothing is here, and I'm feeling more and more disenchanted. Sony had a huge opportunity to put these features in place over the past 6 to 8 months, and truly take a bite out of Microsoft's market share. The question is, is it too late for them to get this all back on track? Only time will tell.

Nobody complained on the ps2, because it wasn't that big. So sony didn't go into it that much.

But now that it's big, Sony is try to make a larger step towards gaming.

I think an Average Joe would be surprised by the things ps3 CAN do right now. I also think that $50 for a service would make consumers reluctant to go online. It's not a lot, but it's something. They are already paying for DSL, then why is it not free.

v1c1ous5825d ago

nobody complained about ps2's online structure, because no one had a good online structure period.

when xbox 1 came out, and xbl first came into the scene, that was when ps2's online component looked archaic.

xbl has forced sony to hit the drawing boards with PSN. and be glad, or right now you would have only 4-5 games with online, no downloadable content, or heck, a simple message system to talk with your buddies.

Yoma5825d ago

Oh, I forgot to say that we will have youtube upload service!

crck5825d ago

They did totally rework the store in April. Plus the service is uh free! Compare it to the other free service available. Yeah doesn't look too bad in comparison does it?

Montrealien5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

Do you remember E3 2000? Sony was very well pushing online support with pretty neat ideas I remember eating up like candy.

*counts on fingers*

That was 8 years ago....

PSN and the online support will get better from Sony, but accept the fact that it is infact lagging, nothing wrong with that, crap happens. I was gaming and chatting online with games like Soccom, Freqency and much more on my PS2 way before my Xbox. They are not the online noobs you label them as.

Lifendz5825d ago

It's been free out the box and has gotten better at a very fast rate. The new PSN store is so easy to use and in-game xmb is on the way.

Tomdc5824d ago

I wanna kno when EU will get the video download service as I presume we won't be getting it at the same time as the US...

thesummerofgeorge5824d ago

Another "is it too late for Sony?" article... Then next time there will be an article about how 360 is dead and ps3 is surely winning the console race. Whatever gets peoples attention.

deeznuts5824d ago

The author can talk once he has actually tried to code anything even remotely close to what Sony is doing. Then talk. Until then, STFU.

Things that are rushed hardly ever turn out well. I can think of some games, even some consoles ...

By this time next year,I strongly believe the Playstation Network will be the most talked about and praised Online gaming network in the video game industry.

Breakfast5825d ago

What little history it has...

All PSN needs to be better then XBL, is in-game XMB...thats it.

TheColbertinator5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

If people want to socialize and talk about their games so much like on xbox live just go to myspace or n4g lol.Frankly to me games are more important and whoever delivers wins my money. If I want to talk to my friends I will just play PSN or Live. But I dont want to pay money for the "privilege" of social gaming.Even though the marketplace has movies I got netflix right here to give me a better selection.Seriously the Live marketplace has alot of garbage movies.

Lifendz5825d ago

people will laugh at the thought of paying a yearly fee for what PSN gives you for free.

BRACHATTACK5825d ago

completely agree, psn IS moving forward. people expect the psn to automatically have everything there for them on a plate, this isn't possible without charging a subscription fee. but to say the psn is free, the updates that are coming are fantastic and better that of xbox live

Siraris5825d ago

I'm just curious, but who expects everything to happen automatically on PSN? Has it not been 2 years since PSN launched? Have these features not been talked about for years now?

And the features that are coming are what Xbox live already has, so I don't understand how you can say it will be better. They are also years late.

I love my PS3, but I'm tired of waiting all this time for content and features it should have had YEARS ago (I'm not talking 2 months ago, or even 6 months ago). You cannot deny that there is an utter dearth of content on the PSN store compared to Xbox LIVE, and we know of next to NOTHING coming any time soon to the PSN store, aside from SOCOM and Wipeout. While those games are great, and I am VERY excited for both, you are trying to attract millions of people out there, casual gamers as well.

Nitrowolf25825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

PSN is growing

lsujester5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

To me it seems like Sony wasted a lot of time building the commercial side of Home, with sponsorship and the like, instead of just improving the current PSN. I wouldn't have minded to wait an extra six months or year for Home if it meant getting in-game XMB, unified friends lists, etc., a year earlier.

Trophies, Home, YouTube, and things like that I could give or take, but not being to pause the game and go chat with a friend is a sin against the online gaming gods.

Sayai jin5824d ago

@BRACHATTACK, the reason why there are more updates on PSN currently is becuase they are contantly adding and debugging a service that has been out 2 years. XBL has been out more than 5 years and has a lot more time to fix a lot of there earlier problems. So people should not compare them. TBH, XMB should hve been there at lunch, but they are working on getting it out. It takes time to perfect online service. Whats funny is that Sony and Nintendo both said online gaming had no future, LOL, yeah right. Sony definately has turned that thoguht around. I would gladly pay for PSN once I see the improvents I want. Is it a good service now, yes, no question! XBL is not perfect either, but as PSN improves so will XBL.

BRACHATTACK5825d ago

sorry for being optimistic. i know where you're coming from because i am frustrated by the lack of things offered by psn at the moment, but you have to realise that the service is free, live takes a huge income which allows it to improve. i feel that home and in game xmb will add immensely to the psn experience. keep the faith brutha, the wait is nearly over:)

Siraris5825d ago

Don't be sorry for being optimistic, but just be realistic as well. Yes, LIVE charges $50 a year, but that most likely goes towards paying the guys who monitor content and the service itself, as well as bandwidth costs, not necessarily improvement of features.

I'm a developer myself, albeit not on a grand scale like LIVE or PSN, but I know the trials and tribulations it can take to get a product ready and on the market. I can even forgive the delay of HOME, but the lack of content on the PSN store is abysmal. I cannot overlook that, simply because you can have a team of 5 guys make a PSN title. With Sony boasting the biggest internal development studio on the planet, they have no excuse, ESPECIALLY when most of their exclusive games this year are from external developers (MediaMolecule, Insomniac, Konami).

beavis4play5824d ago

you can't forgive sony for no content on psn? i don't think you're looking very hard. there is lots of stuff on psn. personally, i think super stardust and echochrome are brilliant. and how many games do you think needs to be on an online store. and do you honestly believe a gamer (who isn't loyal to any brand) would base a console purchase on online services ahead of the games the system has? uh, no. i buy ps because of the exclusive games sony has. on psn i also enjoy lots of demos and movie trailers...etc...so i don't think you are very realistic at all.

but the biggest flaw i see in your post is this: you say you dev. games? then why wouldn't you realize that maybe sony doesn't need to bring as many first party titles out this year because their third party exclusives are so strong. why would they bring out GOW or new jak and daxter or whatever when they have (for example) MGS4, LBP, resistance and even snagged bioshock(with possible new content)from MS exclusive list. they can afford to wait. KZ2 was pushed back to next feb. because they didn't want it to compete with resistance 2. that's a REALISTIC move to expect from a smart business. also, i don't care what anyone says, only a fanboy would insist paying for something that you can get for free makes any sense. i'm very pleased with what sony is offering. my only gripe with psn is they could put some more "classic" arcade games on there. but really, i wouldn't be buying that many so it's not that big of a deal. you say you're being realistic, but i don't think you are. if anything, you're being over-dramatic and a little partial to the 360. but you're entitled to your opinion.

Sayai jin5824d ago

I think he just wants more from PSN. Which in time should come.

ActionBastard5825d ago

Look at where PSN was at launch to now. And it remains free. There's a lot of great things coming and it is nice to see them actually coming to fruition.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere2d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 13h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX3d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 8h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno3d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

2d ago
fsfsxii2d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
