@locknuts: it's been that way around here since 2008. After E3 2007, 360 fan numbers started to dwindle while Sony fan numbers started to sky-rocket. It seemed like every new member was a PS fan. Before that there was more of a parity between fans (maybe a few more 360 die-hards when the site first opened). But that whole "this site used to be super Pro-MS argument" is an absolute fallacy. 2008? Ha ha ha ha no. Just no. Even in 2011 we still were getting massive PS3 is teh doomed articles. It wasn't iuntil PS+ picked up speed and it became obvious the PS3 was going to catch the 360 in sales that things took a shift. And remember that Plus did not launch until June 2010. Until then it was all about Xbox Live being superior, games like Mass Effect (Remember, ME 2 didn't launch until 2010) and how Party Chat - which has actually destroyed comms in MP games - ruled the day.

Any positive PS3 article was instantly flooded with Xbox 360 fans on the attack. They were so aggressive that some of us thought that there were paid MS plants here.

It would only make sense for the site to have had more Sony fans than XBox fans back in 2007. Just by sheer weight of numbers, the PS2 had a huge fanbase.

XBox surely had less fans, but maybe just as many aggressive rabid fanboys.

But from what I remember it was a 3rd contingent that fuelled all the hatred. Fans of the 'Ghost of PS3 future' (that machine that was about to be released with 4D graphics and 1080p 120 frames per second on every game). There was a full year of unsubstantiated bile from that group that made Mr X look like a well-grounded mentally healthy civilian.

So even though the number of XBox fans was probably smaller, it is easy to imagine that they would have become very vocal and very annoying when the PS3 came out with all it's early troubles.

That's how I remember things anyway.

Well to be fair it is not a Japanese game. That entire game was built for the western audience. I think the Japanese market is in a bit of a home console crisis. While the rest of the world is aligning their tastes the Japanese market has stuck to what it likes (which is perfectly fine). I think this generation will see the shift to mobile gaming (on handheld and mobile phones) because it is cheaper to make those games and such they don't appeal to a wide, global, audience. Home consoles may not be where it is at anymore in Japan (though we have yet to see a strong showing from Japanese developers but I feel the reason why is because of what I just said).

I think its possible that the Wii U could pull a Saturn and maintain a healthy position in Japan, maybe even over the PS4. Mainly because, whereas Sony is focusing a lot of their resources on western appeal thus far, Nintendo has nothing BUT focus on Japan. Big stuff over there like Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Fatal Frame, Warriors series, etc. will shift tons of units in Japan but not near as much every where else.
We'll have to wait and see if truly system selling stuff like FFXV and KH3 makes up for all the Japanese-centric stuff on Wii U and its year head start. Its interesting to note the PS3 had similarly meh japanese sales initially and now sells well, and i'd argue the sheer momentum of the PS4 gives it more potential to succeed than the PS3.

PS4 lacks software in Japan. The PS4 sales will increase with more Japanese software. WiiU has been out for 2 years now . I don't know much about Japanese game market . But handheld are the biggest sellers in Japan. If Sony has more Japanese software and Japanese exclusives then they will compete against the wiiU. Japan is a plus for PS4 . These are last weeks sales though, Mario Kart comes out this week. I think it's a combination of all the Hyrule Warriors (which has huge appeal to Japanese gamers) news and the fact that Mario Kart is close to release. I'm sure we'll see an even bigger increase when the sales numbers for this week come out because of Mario Kart 8's actual release.

Well Wii U kept getting more and more quality and fun accessible games while PS4 mostly got western "matured"
games (Wolfenstein TNO,Watch Dogs) one is an old school FPS while another one is a GTA with hacking abilities so no shit PS4 didn't do as good as Wii U in Japan.

you know not everyone will love infamous ( i like it ) or uncharted or the last of us or the cinematic experience all together some people like RPGs some like platformers ( me ) some like other genres and other games .
you know not every game is supposed to be advertised as a Hollywood blockbuster movie you must have the ICO like games rpgs platformers ,etc, and you should hit the perfect spot with those games and not create something low budget like sly cooper thieves in time ( yet it was a great game ) and say hay there is your platformer .

I'm not surprised here, with Mario kart's release, and the fact that Infamous isn't really a popular game in Japan (at least I don't see it as one)...

This is like saying, oh the Wii.U outsells ps4 in the US even though PS4 got Disgaea 5....I mean it's an amazing game but not really catered to the region...

PS4 outsold WiiU last week by a few units. WiiU beats PS4 this week by a few units.

Last week the PS3 beat the PS4, and this week the PS4 beat it by 4 units.

The bigger news is not who is beating who, but how consoles in general are selling in Japan compared to the rest of the world. Seems handhelds and other mobile devices are the important thing in Japan and consoles are almost on the decline.

It's still not selling great there though. Let's be real. I mean, the PS Vita is outselling it. I thought the Wii U would sell like gangbusters (15k-20k) with Mario Kart 8's release on the horizon. Such is not the case.

Also, the PS4 hasn't been selling well at all in Japan. Too few games of interest. It's still pretty early on for that system though. The fact that the PS4's small library isn't stopping the system from selling comparably to the more seasoned Wii U speaks volumes.

I'm all for celebrating success, but there is still a ways to go for the Wii U and the PS4.

That is why I said about 2 years because I was not sure but that's not the point the observation is not the point the point is that the Wii u has had more than enough time to build up a reasonable collection of games while neither of the other systems have even begun to start putting games out at a reasonable rate and it still isn't a reasonable comparison considering the fact that devs are still supporting ps3/360 more than focusing on ps4 or x1 so until these 2 systems mature you simply cannot compare them with a system that has had a years head start

Why is it that People say that Sony has no games for the Japanese oriented games? I think it's the fact that people don't buy into the console hype They buy good Games with replay values. They don't buy HD Graphics over the whole package.

The Wii U has a great price point, Has a great Library of Games, Has some attractive E shop games in Japan, Nintendo showed off upcoming games that appeal to people globally. People say that Japan is a Mobile country I mean every country has a lot of cell phones so that's no excuse. If any company is going to have Japanese gamers sitting in front of there TV's they need to provide an experience you absolutely cannot get on a cell phone and it's got to make you want to sit in front of a TV.

I hate to say this but if they take NFC and make a Pokemon HD stadium game where you can transfer creatures that you captured and trained from your 3ds that right there would be the nail in the coffin.

If you were comparing the 3DS to PS4 or Vita to Wii U (a handheld to home console) then it'd be more like comparing NFL ticked sales to Rugby ticket sales...but it's still not a good comparison.
