CVG Race Driver: GRID Review

Hello Stephen. Your car is ready and waiting." What? Hello? Me? The latest instalment in Codemasters' Race Driver series may not have become self-aware (yet) but there has been a change in emphasis.

Long-time fans may recall the often risible narrative that accompanied the earlier games, with the story relayed in ham-infested cutscenes, which history now judges as somewhere between mildly tolerable and a bit wank.

Memorably, there was one game in which your character was perennially harangued by a drunken Scotsman when all you really wanted to do was race a car.

Not any more. You are you and if you can't find your name amidst the myriad of audio files - or if you fancy a more informal approach - you can opt to be known as one of several nicknames, be it Ace, Boss, Chief, Captain, Spanky or Stud.

"Apparently, there's something called Gran Turismo coming out on the PS3. We simply won't be there. You'll find us on the GRID."

LOL

LTC5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

Then why give it an 8.8 and not a 9+
Also IGN gave this an 8.7 and MGS4 9.9
LOL

DarK-SilV5815d ago

xbots use GTA4 to bash MGS4
and Grid for GT5
LOL

NoT GT5.
GT5 is in it`s OWN league. =]

LJWooly5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

Maybe GRID's a better game than GT5: Prologue, then. Would make sense, since GRID costs £50, whereas Prologue is a £20 game. As for Gran Turismo 5, (the full game) it isn't out yet, so no-one could possibly know how good it is. What was your point though, and why would you be laughing out loud?

power of Green 5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

WTF?.

GRID=NEW HOTTNESS

GT5=OLD AND BUSTED

Try it a few more times playing it like Foza 2(over the hood view) gives it more wide handling due to the handling shifts depending on the view you're in. Thats the way the devs made the game the views themself shift the game to arcade to more sim like ontop of the other things you can tweek to make it less arcadey.

Now if you played the PS3 version you'll think the game handles like sh*t by default because PS3 fans are use to the game doing all the work for them but in GRID the controls are anolog sensitive and PS3's controller simply not built for complex gaming.

Try playing it Using the OVER THE HOOD VIEW and make sure you use the 360's anolog Sticks and Triggers like you would gas pedals and Brake pedals(if you're going to own the superior version that is).

These stupid ass Sony fanboys did not even read the review did you?, my comment was a Quote from the reviwer lol. MGS4 is in a completely different genre Son lol.

LJWooly5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

Wow, that was impressive, PoG. A little sad, yes, but impressive, I suppose...

So this is the game that got a better rating than MGS ??? EDGE and Eurogamer need to get there heads straight.

LJWooly5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

I know, it's ridiculous. But... it's just opinion. I never let reviews decide for me what I should play in the first place, and nor should anyone else. Judging from the reactions to EDGE and Eurogamer's MGS4 reviews, everyone believes MGS4 to be a better game than it's being given credit for, and will buy it anyway. If this is the case, then why do the review scores matter to them?

People need to realise that, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. A few biased idiots giving a game a lower rating than it deserves will not change the end product, and shouldn't be a concern for any self-respecting gamer who can think for themselves.

We weren't born brainless sheep who allow our own opinions to be formed for us by so-called credible "professionals", yet that's what we're fast becoming. Why? Is it the result of the mainstream direction the games industry is headed in nowadays? I don't get it, but at least I can say I wasn't part of it. Think for yourselves people, that's all I can say.

Tmac5815d ago

The thing is when are reviews allowed to be subjective? This isn't OPINION it's a review, that's bias right there. People need to stop these shenanigans.

darkequitus5815d ago

are people get up tight about this game getting a better score than MGS? GRID is getting high scores because the reviewer belive it to be a great game in its genre. What has that got to do with a stealth game? Since when do we compare tetris with GTAIV?

LJWooly5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

Agreed... but you know as well as me that there is absolutely no such thing as a truly "unbiased" opinion. Some reviewers, of course, are more biased than others, but that's just the downside of this broken review system we have in place. 10's just get handed out like candy, and it results in games that haven't generated as much hype as others ending up painfully underrated, falling under every gamer's radar, for reasons as trivial as "Jeff" from IGN told us it's not that good."

Like I said, I've never let reviews judge the quality of a game for me, and as such, I've prevented myself from missing out on a lot of underrated, original and unique games. That's why I'm not getting as worked up as some over this whole MGS4 review thing.

This whole industry is f*cked, and it's sad to see games like Halo 3 break sales records and recieve rave reviews, while deep, original, innovative and unique games don't sell as well, or are simply forgotten by the masses, because of lower marketing budgets and mass appeal.

As such, reviewers have lost sight of what a good game actually is. It's less about the games now, than it is about the money, and that has a detrimental effect on the gaming population as a whole.

Why is this game getting such high review scores?

I have played both the demo and the retail version and let me tell you the demo levels show the best sides of the game. Some of the vehicles you get to drive are close to impossible to keep on the road. Spin out - restart, spin out - restart, spin out... In some racing games, like Forza or Gran Turismo, controls take some time to master. The ones in Grid are just crap. After each race you have to drive a new car so you can never get familiar with any of the different vehicles in the game.

Oh man, I recommend everyone to buy this game...so you can get frustrated enough to send threat letters to the reviewers who praise it.

Btw, the difficulty level makes it the Ninja Gaiden of racing games.

SabreMan5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

just because you find it hard to control doesn't make it a bad game maybe you should look at yourself and realize maybe your just not very good at it

GRID is a very good racing game and imo the best ps3 owners have atm

InMyOpinion5815d ago

Hmmm...that's funny cause I had no problems beating Forza 2 or PGR 3 & 4. I had no problems with the controls in Dirt either. They took some time to get used to but worked ok after a while.

I guess you have only played the demo. In that case I see your point. After 2-3 tries you can win the races. The thing that is wrong about the game is that it's difficulty lies in it's controls, not the AI(even thought it's close to impossible if you go above 'normal'). A great game should have intuitive controls, no matter what.

Tmac5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

Wow, this proves gaming journalism is dead.

A game obviously not worthy of the scores is getting high scores. It's Halo all over again.

Gaming journalism is a place where a bag of goodies is a +1 score, and if you throw in a vacation they'll get you as close to a 10 as possible.

SabreMan5815d ago (Edited 5815d ago )

this proves nothing other than the reviewer liked the game even games reviewers prefer a certain genre over another just like us the gamer does. A racing game scores an 8.8 a stealth game gets an 8 that doesn't mean the racing game is a better game.

You have to take each review in context of what it is, a racing games score has no bearing on a stealth games score.
Compare like for like then the picture gets a little clearer or is every single game ever released comparable to each other ??
do you compare Cod4 to Wii fit,i think not compare like for like
