Hello Stephen. Your car is ready and waiting." What? Hello? Me? The latest instalment in Codemasters' Race Driver series may not have become self-aware (yet) but there has been a change in emphasis.
Long-time fans may recall the often risible narrative that accompanied the earlier games, with the story relayed in ham-infested cutscenes, which history now judges as somewhere between mildly tolerable and a bit wank.
Memorably, there was one game in which your character was perennially harangued by a drunken Scotsman when all you really wanted to do was race a car.
Not any more. You are you and if you can't find your name amidst the myriad of audio files - or if you fancy a more informal approach - you can opt to be known as one of several nicknames, be it Ace, Boss, Chief, Captain, Spanky or Stud.

The Humble Codemasters Racing ReBundle 2020 just launched today. It features games like F1 2019, Dirt Rally 2.0, GRID, and more.
This month’s Humble Choice features twelve games. The headliners for June are GRID Ultimate Edition, Supraland, and Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice. New games are added to Humble Choice on the first Friday of every month.
Was surprised to see Hellblade again, they gave it away last year with Humble Monthly
"Apparently, there's something called Gran Turismo coming out on the PS3. We simply won't be there. You'll find us on the GRID."

So this is the game that got a better rating than MGS ??? EDGE and Eurogamer need to get there heads straight.
Why is this game getting such high review scores?
I have played both the demo and the retail version and let me tell you the demo levels show the best sides of the game. Some of the vehicles you get to drive are close to impossible to keep on the road. Spin out - restart, spin out - restart, spin out... In some racing games, like Forza or Gran Turismo, controls take some time to master. The ones in Grid are just crap. After each race you have to drive a new car so you can never get familiar with any of the different vehicles in the game.
Oh man, I recommend everyone to buy this game...so you can get frustrated enough to send threat letters to the reviewers who praise it.
Btw, the difficulty level makes it the Ninja Gaiden of racing games.
Wow, this proves gaming journalism is dead.
A game obviously not worthy of the scores is getting high scores. It's Halo all over again.
Gaming journalism is a place where a bag of goodies is a +1 score, and if you throw in a vacation they'll get you as close to a 10 as possible.
