Watch Dogs Raises Graphics Bar On PS4 For Open World Games? Sorry, Infamous: Second Son Looks Better

Someone recently called Ubsioft's Watch Dogs as the best looking open world title on Playstation 4 and added that it sets new graphical standards for the genre on Sony's console. To back these bold claims, few screenshots showcasing lightning, shadow effects and textures was shared. If those screenshots raised the bar on Playstation 4, what about Sucker Punch's Infamous: Second Son?

I have been playing watch dogs on PC at 1080p with hbao+ and I still think that graphically something is just missing. Infamous 2nd uses some very cool graphic tricks and I think it is a better looking game. I honestly can say that and I'm just an avid gamer, PC, ps4, xb1. Can't wait to see what the mod community do with watch dogs.

I run a very heavily modded skyrim on a 760 very happily, just have to use HD textures not 2k or I have very bad texture load stutters.

I have to say my personal order of best looking games, Modded skyrim > Infamous SS > Watch Dogs.
BUT vanilla skyrim does not even compete, so best vanilla game I have ever played is Infamous SS.

NewMonday- You obviously don't know how to setup Skyrim with lots of mods because conflicts and overlapping mods will cripple the FPS. Install mods using Nexus Mod Manager, BOSS to find/resolve load order, Wrye-Bash to repair, organize, and optimize, then boot the game using SKSE Loader 1.9.32. You probably just threw a ton of mods together without reading any of the descriptions and changed uGrids to 7 or 9, not understanding what it does. Hint: It doesn't need uGrids increased to look incredible on a GTX680.

Anyways I totally agree with you and as an avid gamer myself with a lot of my parents money to spend and throw at these consoles and games. Watching the video comparisons, I just am disappointed of the lack of optimization the pc version has. Infamous: SS is probably the best looking game I have played in the my life, but that is just my opinion.

Indeed, that is what I thought too. For a game that its pure gameplay relies on cars, WD has PS2 like cars even on ultra while ISS has much better cars even though you don't drive them. Not only that, but characters' models, textures lighting and of course particules are way better in ISS and you have more freedom and more places to visit in ISS because you can even go on the roofs of buildings while in WD I am sure those parts aren't even modeled lol, but the most important thing is ISS RUNS AT 1080p NATIVE WITH AROUND 45 FPS.

Watch Dogs is actually the worst looking open-world game on the PS4. The game is not graphically impressive in the least. It is stuck somewhere in limbo between GTA5 last-gen and Infamous:SS this gen, and sadly it is closer to GTA5 than it is Infamous.

I agree with you. Watch Dogs is the most alive game I have seen. There is constant motion and dynamism in Watch Dogs and the lighting engine is amazing. Infamous Second Son has better textures on average and more impressive particle effects, but Watch Dogs is more impressive in most other areas.

I have to disagree. The PC version of watch dogs doesn't IMO look as good as ISS. The characters and textures and the scale of the game is much better on ISS, when i mean scale im talking about your are able to go any place you can see. If you mean shocking as in shockingly good then yes, I enjoyed the heck out of the game and I loved the sarcastic humour and banter between delsin and his brother, I think the fighting was amazing too completely smooth and it felt like everything fit together. I wasnt expecting it to be as good as it was, then it was topped off with THE best open world graphics I have ever seen on a console, and the lighting effects where crazy. Even the rain dripping on the road was fun to just watch.

But what about after the story lines? Your stuck with a pretty open world (open minus the water?) to take pictures in. There is nothing else to do. It's not like there are side quests to do unless you count blowing up a camera that takes 30 seconds to find, if that. I don't count things that don't take any amount of thought or skill as side missions. Infamous is a beautiful game that's for sure, but it's a dead and lifeless "open world". It's also one of the most limited "open worlds" I have ever played in when it comes to density. The only buildings you can enter need to be glitched into.

You really can't compare the two games as Watch Dogs is a more open world game with massive freedom, more real estate and many more AIs to tax the CPU like GTAV.

inFamous, even though it is open world, is a more linear scripted game in the same vein as previous installments so I am not surprise that it look better just like inFamous 2 look better than GTAV.

In game development, there are tradeoffs and we really have to compare games in the exact same genre to really tell the story.

I think it may have looked better if it were focused for new gen consoles, but that's only speculation on my part. Look at Battlefield 4. Ill probably get hate for this; but Tomb Raider on ps4 looks and plays better than both those games. I wasnt too impressed with second son and have only seen a bit of watch dogs. Every time I put TR:DE in, my jaw hits the the floor. It is, technically an open world game, granted there isn't a ton of npcs and vehicles. Playing at 60fps really spoiled me.

Well, 60fps really made the difference to me. The character models in SS were amazing and blew away TR. But the scenes in the woods during the daytime in TR were just amazing. The way the rocks looked wet and the detail and lighting effects... like I said, I didnt expect everyone to agree with me. I just expected more from SS. Especially since it was the first exclusive. I didnt like the game that much, so that might have something to do with it.

It uses cheap tricks with the low sun and wet surfaces to make a game look prettier than it is.

In the day, Infamous looks terrible like Watch Dogs.

All the PS4's power went into the graphics, and as a result we had dull gameplay, too short of a game and only 1 power worth using, and some of the worst framerate deviation I think I've seen in many years.

The world was empty.

Infamous proves the PS4 lacks power. Fans requested a cap on the FPS for god sake, at 30.

It is the best looking game ON CONSOLES though. PC modded Skyrim with ENB, better textures etc blows Infamous out the water.

Just take a look at the character models in skyrim, how they move etc - i doesnt hold a candle to SS. Sure the landscape looks good and the lightning is a ok - but truth is if we take a look on gfx only SS has way better gfx overall than skyrim. Even when modded.

Doesnt matter wich super PC you play skyrim on. Old code - you need to rewrite stuff to even get close.

Comparing PS4 and ISS to PC is, well, idiotic. Every gamer out there knows PC is superior in terms of framerate and resolution. Visuals mean very little in terms of quality. I'll take excellent gameplay and story [over] 4k res and "OK" gameplay any day.

Even the PC version on HIGH settings @ 1080p doesn't even look as good as Infamous Second Son.

You can look at this 2 ways:
-Sucker Punch did an amazing job
-Ubisoft did a piss poor job on the PC version.

No excuse for a game on PS4 hardware, to look better then a game on high end PC hardware.

Looks like we will need mods for Watch Dogs.

Havent played either but I've been blown away by what I've seen from infamous, and not really as impressed with the showcase from watchdogs.

People like to tout how much "more" watchdogs does, but the particles in infamous easily would destroy the processing power needed to give some civilians a few "if statements" for the ai's to run animations. Particle effects are far more taxing--and it's thoroughly obvious because the type used in infamous were not even possible on last gen tech (and remember: there is a watchdogs for last gen hardware which has all the same ai). On older tech, you can run the ai of civilians found in watchdogs--this is not a guess, it's a fact.

So if anybody is using that argument, you should be ashamed of yourself. Infamous is built on the capability to showcase a greater number of interacting particles than older tech could possibly attempt. As I understand it, the infamous world is under a police state--why on Earth would there be crowds of people constantly flooding the streets? Use your damn brain for a second.

I may have a bias, considering my colleague worked on this game, but the ignorance I read online from people who know nothing is incredible.

You make it sound easier than it actually is. It's easy to say these things but you weren't there when they were creating the dynamics on how these things randomly happen, that DOES tax more than particle effects that aren't dynamically happening at all times unless the player is constantly moving. It's totally different ideations at work here, you can't possibly compare the two that simply and say "Infamous wins". That's not how it works and, I have a feeling, you know that.

It's not a matter of who "wins" per se, it's a matter of which looks better. And I:SS looks (and plays for that matter) better. I have both, comparing WD running on my gaming PC (which is more powerful) vs ISS on my PS4.

Everyone is so obsessed with the looks how about the gameplay. I had to force myself to finish SS, I personally thought it was dull. I'm looking forward to an open world game to enjoy, let's hope WD is the game for me.

Infamous SS is just boring and beautiful,there is barely anything going on on the screen except while fighting dpd's.The game world is very empty and every corner looks the same. I finished the game and like my ps4, still you can hate me for this comment, I don't care!

Second Son looks great, but there is way less going on in the open world town compared to WatchDogs or GTA so it's way easier to push nicer graphics.

If you want to see true next gen graphics... (in terms of GRAPHICS ONLY) than Ryse is still the best looking game so for.

It's been reiterated a thousand times already, but the only area that Ryse outclasses the competition is facial detail and character animations. In no other aspect does it claim technical superiority.

Come back to me when The Order takes place in a city with lush vegetation and a river log crossing and a river. If you want a game that has diverse, beautiful landscapes, water systems, and vegetation sadly we will have to wait for Uncharted 4.

Still, it's kinda embarrassing that you are comparing a game that's out with a game that's unfinished.

Second Son's visuals really did blow my mind. But that's about it. The gameplay was fun but the city itself felt so dull after completing the story. Watch Dogs on the other hand obviously does not have that visual fidelity but it has way more re-playability and longevity.

So infamous is way ahead of Watch Dogs and any other game both artistically and technically.

I've played the Watch Dogs beta that is more than likely the source of the recent leaks. Graphically, both games are very similar but WD looked more "realistic". PS4 fans of WD will not be disappointed at all with how WD looks in motion and plays.

I was really excited to pick this game up tomorrow for my XB1 but I hit a snag. My GPU in my PC is finally outdated after 6 years. I'm not a graphics snob, so if a game runs without gameplay hindering problems I'm happy. Well Tropico 5 requires DX11 card and mine is DX10 so it wouldn't run.

I got an affordable card but its still 5 times as powerful as my current card but here's the kicker. It comes with a free copy of Watchdogs. Watchdogs is the type of game I'd normally play on console but I'm not gonna turn down a free game. Now I'm gonna have to wait for the card to show up in the mail and for MS to give me proper PC driver support before I get to play it

pc gamers are annoying, consoles have to be cheap and infamous ss looks better then any version of watchdogs, watchdogs on ultra settings doesnt look that much better only a little better looking then high and you need a freaking high end card to do that, order1886 far surpasses any pc game anyways and so will uncharted 4 and probally halo 5 and quantum break, pc has no good exclusives just crappy indie games that come to the consoles anyways all they play is ports all day lol

Infamous SS was only developped for ps4.

I don't really want to be part of this conversation as it's absolutely ridiculous seeing Console/PC players put each other in the Platform Wars. Honestly, shame on everyone who indulges in this nonsense, as they're all insanely different preferences. I'll write to both: - For trolling PC users', do you understand that consoles are a preference for people? Do you understand it's not all about graphics for everyone, or Mouse/KB? Some people enjoy other ways of gaming you know. - For trolling console gamers', do you play anything on the PC with a real gaming PC? Do you grasp what a PC is, and why it should never be compared to consoles? Do you follow any of their games past, or future? Do you honestly understand the Prices/open-source/hardware?.. .

Do(any)of you understand that all of the programming for every game/software on the planet is done on a type of PC? That all "Exclusives" are purely a marketing scheme that people perpetuate, and has nothing to do with the PC's/Consoles "limitations"? Even consoles hardware limitations are on purpose; "One breaks down, buy another"; "buy our insurance"; "new console, can't upgrade, so buy our new upgrade." Clearly many of you don't grasp that all of the limitations are perpetuated by your own self, and even though PC doesn't have the hardware/software/development limitations like a console does, the PC is subject to/from exclusive games as well (which ones are irrelevant).

I think it's time to grow up and get educated. One day a merger will happen, it is inevitable, because people will get tired of perpetuating this money-train nonsense. One day soon you will all have your mobile Couch/Desktop PC with it's own Social Gaming Operating System of preference that can run any game, but only so long as you all stop fighting over exclusives, and platform wars. Every gamer should be able to play any game regardless of the "platform"; Steam O.S is a good start into this honest-non-exclusive market. Will Steam etc. be the end-all be-all? No, and it's irrelevant honestly, because it is the start of what is to come, that is for certain. Just know that this ideal was known/coming to many of us before Steam O.S was ever conceived.

Lets make the right decisions as a gaming -community- (just like politics of the world) and make the best changes possible for everyone that is a gamer, that refuses world segregation and exclusives. Thanks. Best of luck to all of you.
