5 Reasons Why 'Wolfenstein: The New Order' Is Shooter Of The Year (So Far)

I beg to differ.

There’s something about the game that is so much more than that. Yes, it’s competent. But it’s more than that. It’s a thoughtful, invigorating shooter focused entirely on its single-player campaign. The game is as tight and well-tuned as any shooter I’ve played in recent years.

And quite frankly, this is the most fun I’ve had with an FPS since Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

This game actually has turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It wasn't on my radar at all until about a month ago, and I'm glad I picked it up, it's fun. It reminds me of early Medal of Honors and CODs back in the day (when they were ground breaking titles)...in a positive way. The gun action feels great in the game, and I like the ability to play stealthy or all out. I also like that you earn in game perks by doing things in that style of play. I like when games do that, not just simply hand out a point for a certain amount of XP (that's fine too I guess, but I prefer rewarding a player for playing in that style) ...like Elder Scrolls does in games like Oblivion...wanna get good at stealth? Sneak around... all in all I've been having fun with this game, glad I got it.

From what I'm seeing, there is a certain tactical element amongst the old-school run and gun gameplay. I really like how you have to pick up guns and ammo instead of just running through them. Little touches like that...

The leaning mechanic is fantastic. During both intense action, and the stealth segments.

The first fifteen minutes or so fall flat, but it immediately goes from about zero to eighty and never lets up. Somehow it keeps getting better and surprising me.

It's a game for people that love shooter games. Not since the first Bioshock have I enjoyed a shooter this much.

I've loved the Wolfenstein franchise since Return to Castle Wolfenstein and I must say this game definitely lives up to my expectations, I spent 6 hours yesterday playing it straight and got pissed that I had to stop to get some sleep before work, It is a great game, love the stealth aspect of it, love walking up behind Nazis and sticking my knife in their throat as I say 'Peek-a-boo', like when you get to do it to the one nazi taking a leak, all I could think of was Zoolander in black face in the coal mine jumping out and saying "surprise!", but seriously can't wait to leave work and go play it some more, definitely a 9 out of 10 in my book, it is almost a Return to Castle Wolfenstein Part 2, and I love it.

The same old run and gun followed by ambush after ambush after ambush is what made FPS so boring lately. So it will be nice to see a change.

The gameplay is pretty standard, nothing wrong with that it's good fun, but I was very surprised at how mature and well done the story telling, characters and camera work is, very pleasantly surprised!

Actually Yes, play the game, you will be surprised. It has got the best of oldshool PC and new style military shooters and manages to feel unique in its own way.

Titanfall is the only other shooter I can think of. So as far as single player fps goes there are none except Wolfenstein

I still have not finished the game quite yet but I feel like I will go back just to find all the collectibles. Its exactly what I expected and more. It really does look and play awesome.

It's FUN. It's SO much fun. I'm not going to apologize for enjoying a game that isn't "revolutionary," that's for sure.

The best single player FPS I've played since Spec Ops The Line, and only 2 hours in. I also like that you actually have to pick stuff up. I always thought passing over things to obtain in a game was a lazy mechanic. So far so good.

It's fast, it's fluid, there's blood spatter from alot of dead Nazis, it has lots of weapons, and plenty of challenge from enemy Ai. I'm glad that at least one company decided to bring "Doom" styled FPS back to life. COD and it's clones are in desperate need of a "back-to-the-drawing-boar d" make over.

There is a difference between bulletproof AI and smart AI. Playing on uber does nothing but increase the bullet sponge capability. That isn't AI, it's just A.

I'm flabbergasted at the reaction to Wolfenstein. What is so special about it? Usually I would go "different people, different opinions" but this game is so generic and so ugly I just don't get it.

The fact that you used "generic" proves that you haven't given this game a fair shake.

Definitely a sleeper hit, this game turned out to be really fun to play (I'm about 3 hours in). MachineGames did a great job on this, they did what Rocksteady did for Batman IMO.

It is a solid game and brings back the Wolfenstein series nicely...

Nice that it is a solid and smooth 60 fps
Graphics are solid
Pacing is great
Although linear there are many trunk paths
Gameplay mechanics are spot on
Lots of collectibles
Lots of weapons
Lots of gameplay

They hit all the right buttons.

Just bought it but it's still downloading. I've been so sick of games recently but something about this one has caught my interest and I'm not even sure what. I think maybe because every other game seems to be screaming 'look how innovative and new we are! You won't believe how we redefine your idea of what a game can be!' while looking to me like the same old corny thing with a few added gimmicks. It's almost refreshing now to see a game that seems to say 'look, we got guns, robots and hordes of Nazis to kill. Do you wanna play or not?'.

Also anything with links to the Darkness videogame is worth a look to me.

This game reminds me so much of Resistance. Very glad they went that route instead of making a sequel to the last Wolfenstein...

BJ seems more human and the supporting characters are all unique and interesting.

This is what shooters should strive to be.

solid steath
player choice: guns blazing or stealth or both
collectibles
Meaningful characters
a nice mix of tradition corridor shooting and open hubs

This is definitely the best shooter out there.

Already on my second playtrough, this time on Über difficulty trying to get the last collectibles and trying the other path.

Played quite stealthy the first time around so running around the castle in mission 1 dual-wielding Assault rifles is absolutely hilarious with all the gore and tonnes of Nazis dieing.

Best game of 2014 so far for me. Just enough time to finish 2nd playtrough before Watch Dogs ! :)

Currently playing...such a satisfying game! ID delivered with this one. Looks incredible and plays well. I'm glad they focused on a SP component only, it shines. No need for MP with a campaign like this.

Something is stopping me from buying this game and I don't know what it is! Shame there isn't a demo. I might just sit and watch some ps4 twitch stream on live from PlayStation to help make my mind up
