Project CARS: “Staged” Screenshots vs Actual Gameplay; Here’s How The Game Really Looks

The visuals of Slightly Mad Studios’ Project CARS have been discussed a lot because seeing screenshots of actual gameplay is pretty rare. With "actual gameplay" it isn't meant that the screenshots you’re normally shown aren’t taken in game, but simply that they display complex camera work which is much different from what you’d see while driving.

That’s why today you can see how the game really looks in Ultra settings, comparing staged screenshots taken by adjusting the camera to put the cars under the “best light” with exactly the same situation shown by the normal chase camera you’d see while driving (if you like external views, of course).

Project cars has been looking pretty impressive and had me interested but looking at those screenshots and comparing them to the very impressive looking Drive Clubs Graphics of actual gameplay it's not even a contest.

Drive Club it is then http://www.google.co.uk/img...

WeAreLegion3637d ago

Just get both. They play much differently. I'm getting both.

karl3637d ago

agreed..

project cars is pure simulation probably ..

while driveclub looks like a blast to play and look.

Baka-akaB3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

Seriously , i think that a "real" car enthusiast , if he got the financial means , will just get both .

It's hardly the same games with just graphics differences . It's two wholly different take and philosophy on racing

ZodTheRipper3637d ago

Graphically and especially artistically Driveclub takes the cake. Gameplaywise Project CARS will definately handle better but who knows which is more fun? I'm fine with only one racing game during the end of the year since so many other games are releasing at that time ...so I will wait and see how both shape up.

AsimLeonheart3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

People have been bashing all other racing games including Driveclub, Forza and GT after seeing those earlier Project Cars screenshots without even laying a hand on the actual game themselves. Now we see how the game actually looks during gameplay. I dont know how people get so easily fooled and hyped by bullshots. I think a lot of eyes will be opened and hearts will be broken when the actual game releases.

AceBlazer133637d ago

Agreed for getting both. DriveClub made me want to get back into racers this gen, glad I did. NFS Rivals was so much fun.

DriveClub ,The Crew, Project Cars, Gran Turismo. I'm all in for the racers this gen, getting them all.

theshonen88993637d ago

I'm getting both. And I'm going to get Grid Autosport for PC, and then Gran Turismo 7.

Because I love cars.

Salooh3637d ago

This game still have a feeling of need for speed shift in gameplay. I think GT is more realistic but it still looks promising and great to the point that if anyone like GT should buy this day 1 since there is no GT in this gen.

As for drive club , it have an arcady gameplay. So i wouldn't compare both , If you like both types of gameplay then you will have fun on both. Drive clun looks gorgeous though ^^ .

Destrania3637d ago

I'll probably end up getting both, but Driveclub has me waaayyy more excited.

GTgamer3637d ago

Drive club looks rediculousy fun just saying (•ิ_•ิ) and im all for fun racers.

Omegasyde3637d ago

I am getting both too. Cars will keep me busy until gran tourismo.

Also the official car list isnt out but from the rumored list its lacking in respects to forza and gran tourismo. I know its not official but I really hope lamborghini is in the game. I have low hopes on the car list due to the studio being indepenant with no big publisher.

Drive club is eye candy and is the game you show off to your friends. In a way the game is more of a Gothem-like racer than simulation. I am still abit bummed about the 30fps, but if they can use "your going faster" tricks than thats ok. Just dont overdo it on the motion blur.

Once you play wipeout hd at 60 fps, its hard to go back :)

memots3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

Agree, Getting Project Car on PC and Driveclub.

Both will give me plenty of enjoyment.

right now, Assetto Corsa, Gt6, F1 2013 pc, Grid 2 pc, Next car game alpha and oh yeah Nfs rival ps4 ( for some arcade fun ) are keeping me well entertained until those title come.

tommygunzII3637d ago

Fun is subjective. Fun for me is racing a simulated experience but good racing is usually boring to most people.

N4g_null3637d ago

I'm liking pcars better. Nice dramatic shot though... good luck playing in the dark though, with no dynamic range lights.

RumbleFish3636d ago

What is this "This is how the game really looks"???

All so called "staged screenshots are taken from the game. Of course you have different views and detail when you move the camera freely.

And on top of that they've chosen the overhead camera for their "how the game really looks"-screenshots.

piroh3637d ago

well, DriveClub is exclusive. anyway, Project Cars looks good, it reminds me GT6

Abriael3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

having played driveclub as well (an outdated build, I'll admit, but I doubt they completely changed the physics) they play nothing alike.

We also have to remember that Project CARS displays a massive number of cars on screen. At the moment the max is 31. That's a whole lot of polygons :D

Even if of course I don't know if they'll have the same limit on consoles.

Utalkin2me3636d ago

So you're saying 31 cars can be on the screen at one time in Project Cars? Im not trying to troll here, i seriously have not seen this fact. If you can supply me with info i would be grateful.

Abriael3636d ago

I'm saying exactly that. I can't really supply more info than what I'm seeing on my screen with the beta :D

Naga3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

@ amiga-man

The two games are on opposite ends of the racing spectrum: Driveclub is a social, arcade-style racer; Project CARS is a hardcore racing simulation.

Anyone who chooses one of these over the other on the basis of visuals alone is going to be in for a very rude awakening.

memots3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

"Hardcore sim" might be pushing it.

It does lean toward Sim but not hardcore.

Lets just put a rating here just for fun.
With no assist i would say it reaches a 80%on the sim like rating.

Assetto Corsa , Rfactor , R3e being more near the 100%

user56695103636d ago

Dont rain on their picnic. This is their chance to claim drive club looks better

badz1493637d ago

is it just me or most of those cars look a bit "cartoonish"?

JP13693637d ago

Project Cars is a sim and will be doing many more calculations, all at twice the frame rate. Something has to give and in this case, it's geometry and effects. Still, as a sim fan, I'd rather have the physics and responsiveness that Project Cars will offer. I'm sure I'll still play the hell out of Driveclub with friends. The sense of speed in the Canada video was insane!

Dasteru3637d ago

That video was running 30x timelapse.

JP13693635d ago

Dateru
That affects time of day, not the sense of speed.

Magicite3637d ago

I believe both will be amazing games, lets hope they get decently polished, so we can enjoy them as they are intended.

Dasteru3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

Driveclub has nicer looking background environments but PCars has much more detailed vehicles, more detailed tracks, and vastly superior weather effects. PCars is also a sim while driveclub is 90% arcade.

You also have to remember that Driveclub is very close to release while PCars is still in early beta. Most of the work on PCars so far has been on the vehicles and physics.

hollabox3637d ago

Still looks good, but I was not too impressed with the frame rates. But hey SMS still have about 5 months to smooth every thing out.

GundalfDeGrej3637d ago

If they manage to reach 60 fps then I won't mind the less impressive visuals. Then again, I might get this for PC so it might not even be a problem for me.

Xdone3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

Man! Are you sure those are PC ultra settings?

@abriael

Thanks mate :)
Keep up the good work!

Project Cars looks awesome but environments, I think driveclub has the most detailed environments in any racing game so far.
I am still in awe seeing that canada forest video. O.O!

Abriael3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

Absolutely.

You'll see exactly the same difference in any racing game, mind you. Actually in others you'll see more, as replay use higher resolution models, in Project CARS they use the same.

edit: and yeah, the environments still need a lot of work, courses aren't complete. Some of them don't even have buildings or trees yet, so I expect big improvements there. At the moment they're just made to drive on :D

Milruka3637d ago (Edited 3637d ago )

But these are again just screenshots.

There is no gameplay posted in this link.

Anyways, those road textures are amazing in every shot.

Why did EA Kill Project CARS?

This video explains why we think Electronic Arts didn't see a future in the sim racing title Project CARS and promptly cancelled the fourth instalment.

Jin_Sakai536d ago

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox536d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade534d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole534d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow535d ago (Edited 535d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow534d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad535d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist535d ago (Edited 535d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace534d ago (Edited 534d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad534d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim535d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

Original Project CARS creator trying to re-hire EA team

Ian Bell, the founder of Slightly Mad Studios, is aiming to hire former Project CARS employees to work on his upcoming GTR Revival project.

Sgt_Slaughter538d ago

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.

EA dropping Project CARS

From GI.biz: "EA is dropping Project CARS, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.

The Slightly Mad Studios-developed series was launched in 2015, with EA confirming today that it has made the decision to "stop further development and investment" in the franchise.

The announcement was made internally and it's unclear at this stage to which extent staff could be affected. EA said that employees working on Project CARS will be moved into "suitable" roles "wherever [they] can.""

Terry_B540d ago

Typical for EA. They buy studios that created nice games..and are sooner or later destroying them and move the people to work on the old same 5+ EA series.

italiangamer540d ago

They will put the developers on the 1000th Need for Speed for the rest of their entire careers, just like Criterion.

SurgicalMenace540d ago

To be fair, it's not EAs fault it falls directly on the consumer. Everytime these companies choose to drop a series they're met with backlash though the gamers didn't support said series enough to justify its continuation. Attempting to paint every company as evil all because they're in it to succeed is ridiculous. They have to make money just like each of us typing in this section. If a job wasn't supporting you well you'd quit and find a new one, this is the same mentality concerning series.

TheColbertinator539d ago

@SurgicalMenace

No it is their fault. They don't listen to fans and burn the franchise to the ground by introducing elements that nobody wanted instead of increasing support for said respected franchises.

I order a steak, they make a steak. 1st sale
I order a steak again, they vomit on my steak and charge me more for it. No sale.

EA in a nutshell.

Tapani539d ago

@TheColbinator Well how do you think they make the billions then?

Their fans ARE buying their games. You are just not their focus group, and I can guarantee their customer insights team is more thorough and detailed in their reaearch than any N4G commentors’ opinion on the matter. Otherwise EA would not exist as a company, and they’d be bankrupt.

deleted540d ago

The one that still hurts the most though was Criterion w the Burnout series. Acquired Criterion's tech for their own existing IP, then shut em down. It's basically parasitic. I sure do miss Burnout's crash mode!

Hofstaderman540d ago

Sounds eerily similar to another large unnamed corporation hey. I believe some EA bigwigs shifted to that company back in the day, would explain the similarities.

rlow1539d ago

Must be talking about Sony

peppeaccardo540d ago

and instead they come out with that piece of shit of Need for Speed which looks like an Anna & Barbera cartoon. C'mon .... PC2 was my go to game for VR racing and the first one i played for tens of hours. i was so lookiing forward to PC4 after that failure of PC3 ... what a shame EA, they are bombing all the good games and stick to the garbage ones. EA when you think you have reached maximum of disappointment they top it off with style .... screw them!

SurgicalMenace540d ago

Need for Speed continues to sell so why would they get rid of what's producing what they need to maintain stability?

EazyC540d ago

What they did to this series was idiotic. The premise was great -- a sim/simcade game that GENUINELY got developed in line with its community. There is a huge gap in the market for this...I mean, PD hasn't listened to fans at all over the last year with regard to simple Gran Turismo 7 tweaks. Sim racing fans are screaming for a title where they actually give a shit about their users.

Project Cars 2 was genuinely on to something, it just needed some refinement. But instead they followed up by selling off to EA with a braindead GRID clone with Project Cars 3. Again...idiotic.

SurgicalMenace540d ago

Well since you're the authority on properly managing a million dollar company, why don't you just call them to let them know of your divine wisdom?

Hardcore sim racers are the ones who are competing acrossed the globe, no company in their right mind would focus on a forever moving casual market. They have to focus on those dedicated to supporting their efforts. Notice how you're speaking from a perspective of self opposed to the collective. Perhaps they sold out because they, like us, needed the money knowing that they could reinvest it into something new. PC was a decent racer but very few people mainlined it over GT or Forza.

EazyC539d ago

I'm not a divine authority but I notice a pattern where these huge corporations turn completely tone deaf of what the "average fan" wants.

vallencer539d ago

Hate to break it to you but project cars 3 was published by Bandai in 2020. EA didn't buy codemasters, which owned slightly mad studios, until 2021. Either way the sales were super poor for the game and it's not surprising EA would just drop the game. BUT it still sucks because it's one less sim racing game on the market. Especially because the first 2 were really good.

Tzuno540d ago

and focuses more on cartoon network games
