A few weeks ago, we posted an article about the origins of 7 popular game names. Obviously, there are many more games out there that have an interesting story attached to their game name. Some names come from lore surrounding the game itself, and others have a more odd and seemingly unrelated past.

I think the real-world origins of the names are more interesting than the made up lore. DOTA is a prime example. Who cares what the story is? The name, I think, has really nothing to do with the made-up back story and everything to do with the fact that the game is a clone of Aeon of Strife (AOS). It was clear that a cool-sounding name with a nice acronym was a staple of a popular Starcraft/Warcraft III map, and so they came up with DOTA/Defense of the Ancients.
I feel like these stories weren't really all that interesting. I mean, most of it was just kinda common sense.
