Call of Duty 2014: First Image Revealed

During its Game Developers Conference 2014 panel, Quest for Quality: Maximizing the Relationship Between Creative and Production, Sledgehammer Games revealed an image showing in-game character models for the next Call of Duty.

erictaylorkid3658d ago

If that's "actually" in-game, awesome. But I doubt it.

Magicite3658d ago

looks way too good for in-game, but who knows.

pedrof933658d ago

So it's going to be a war game huh ?

cfc783658d ago

@ pedrof93

No it's going to be a knitting game.

Muffins12233658d ago

Actually if you go into bigger screen it really does...it looks legit but im not amazed by it.

TomShoe3658d ago

Hey, it can't be worse that Ghosts.

Nowhere to go but up, so I'll stick to cautious optimism for now.

Maknsense3658d ago

I have hope for Sledgehammer because nothing can be worse than ghost. Along with better graphics, the need to bring back the real Chopper Gunner, AC130, Pave Low, Stealth Bombers, Air Support and leave UAV in the Sky. Don't take away the slide or peeking around corners ability. Just be creative but keep it traditional.

christian hour3658d ago (Edited 3658d ago )

Most likely from the PC version, going off the series (and Activisions)approach in the past when showing initial teasers, and for a PC character model, I've definitely seen better in years past.

It's just gonna be another half-assed FPS Modern Military Shooter cashing in on a demographic that buys these games senselessly. They're really going to have to innovate this time around if it's ever going to lose the negative stigma that has been surrounding the series since MW1 and the crappy way Activision treated Infinity Wards founders and original creators of the IP. This is probably their last chance for redeeming it in the eyes of old fans.

And I do understand a lot of people enjoy the MP, I won't knock you for enjoying it. But wouldn't a much preferable platform for the COD MP gamer be something along the lines of an MMO based model, with a 40-60 euro yearly subscription with fresh new content and gameplay innovations coming in the form of regular updates and free expansions, you're already paying 60 euro a year (more if you opt in on DLC) to get this on a disc and never touching the single player anyway.

Going off of achievement/trophy percentages, 35% play the first mission, and that drops to 10% by the second, with something around 2-3% of owners playing after the 4th mission, and around 1% actually completing it.

The majority of the COD demographic has no interest in single player, and even then the modern FPS shooter tends to be a linear path that punishes you with death for trying to go in any other direction or approaching the task at hand in your own way. Something needs to change BIG TIME, personally I have been done with the MMS FPS genre since MW1, nothing new has been brought to the table since then.

Also I'm not much of a Multiplayer PVP guy myself, thats just my personal preference, I understand I'm in the minority there :)

*edit* I wasted my 1000 comment to moan about COD? I need to take a long hard look at my life choices... :P Still, happy 1000th comment to me, it only took 7 years :) (8-9 if you count the years I came here as an unregistered user) Do I get a cake? Or... a high five at least?

GhostTurtle3658d ago

@ TomShoe

Actually, It could just go nowhere.

p0tat0stix3658d ago (Edited 3658d ago )

Instead of a dolphin dive or knee slide, this game will incorporate the new "Whip out the Mach 3 and shave with Gillette" feature.

If you so choose to equip the Mach 3 instead of a secondary weapon, simply hold B while running and your character will enter into a 3D shaving commercial. For that perfect shave on the battlefield.

Pro Racer3658d ago

Last year they said Ghosts was next-gen CoD. Now they say that this year will be a true next-gen CoD. My guess is we'll hear the same thing next year as well...

Dee_913657d ago

im intrigued..
I would love to fall in love with COD again.Hope sledge hammer dont disappoint..

Display3657d ago

How?

This is what infamous second son looks like when you zoom on Delsin...

What's the difference ?

VforVideogames3657d ago

ill bet you this is on XBOXONE because xbox is the only one that can do facial like that.

BallsEye3657d ago

This is definitely in-game. Can see it by the shading and textures. Characters were never really bad in COD, but environment was awful. I'll hold my judgement till I see some of that outdoor maps.

Sevir3657d ago

Graphics can't save this game, Gameplay changes will, the annoying hold your hand and tell you what to shoot and when to shoot mechanic is tiring! The follow the leader AI partner that talks for you, screams at you and yells during predictable set pieces to heighten the fake sense of adrenaline is ages old.

If they take on an open approach similar to BF while totally abandoning that scripted hold your hand game play recycled for years and add some innovative ways to do set pieces and some solid gunplay I'll turn my head and pay attention... If they stick to everything so far from previous then this franchise is doomed to be nothing but Shit! In anycase I'll be all over Destiny come September. I haven't touched COD hardcore since Modern Warfare...

voodoochild3463657d ago (Edited 3657d ago )

@VForVideogames
What other than complete fanboyism and ignorance would make you make that statement? Do you think the xbone uses some secret cia processor to achieve realistic faces or do you think games like ryse just focused all its resources on character models above all else. Only one of those is correct. I wonder if you chose the obvious right answer.

XisThatKid3657d ago

NICE!!!! I been hoping for a Black Ops to remastered edition!!!

aCasualGamer3657d ago

They will claim it's ingame until the last week before launch when they downgrade it. False advertisement has happened way too many times in this industry and i doubt Activision won't use this tactic, however idiotic.

mcarsehat3657d ago

how come this article is at 1100' if everyone hates call of duty games??????????

plus about the graphics, the order convinced everyone that cutscene cgi trailers and bullshots are a thing of the past, same with assassins creed V so you never know.

That is actually in-game. Lets be honest here Call of Duty games are pretty decent in quality but we are just sick of seeing a COD game every year since the last 8 years and add on top of that the constant stream of overpriced DLC and sales bragging and we have a recipe of how to make gamers sick of a once beloved franchise.

Thatguy-3103658d ago

*Them chapped lips!!!" Lol on topic I think Ghost looked pretty good. The set pieces were entertaining to witness too. What these war games need to focus on is just providing a good story. The narrative needs to stop following generic events that lead to generic situations. The characters and story itself needs more depth. The day a developer nails a good story with a modern take on war will be amazing.

HammadTheBeast3658d ago

They are decent at best in quality. The thing which makes people mad is the fact that they have the resources to make it look much better, but they refuse to, and go for the bare minimum.

bjmartynhak3658d ago

Pretty decent in image quality. Maybe it's more appropriate this way.

Graphics are simple, but crisp.

wedgie3658d ago

@dboyc310

Don't know if you got the chance to, but would recommend Spec Ops the Line. Completely surprised me with how great it was, telling a modern war story, but was very deep.

You can pick it up pretty cheap now too

darren_poolies3657d ago

@dboyc310

I actually think COD4 nailed it as did Spec Ops: The Line.

irepbtown3657d ago

COD4 is quite possibly one of the best FPS from last gen (or ever). No other COD has come close to the fun, joy and quality of that game. It had a solid single player campaign and online was fun and simple. For a 2007 game the graphics were magnificent.

I just hope this COD can do the same for this gen.

Zancruz3658d ago

Yeah it looks good and all.... But what most people really care about, Is there Lag online? Lol

mark3214uk3658d ago

would explain the rumour about them switching to sony this year, as the ps4 is capable of them textures

Fireseed3658d ago

Oh really? Care to tell us what the resolution of those textures are? Maybe you can explain if they're using a new material based skinning system? How about at least telling us if they're finally switching from normal to displacements maps.... Or maybe you're just talking out of your bum :P

We know nothing about this yet, but you're already willing to say that the PS4 is doing "them textures" while knowing NOTHING about "them textures"

mark3214uk3657d ago (Edited 3657d ago )

you sound like ms hurt your feelings?

wait till e3 you will see native 1080p on ps4 720 on x1

ps4 will be the lead platform with most top AAA games

Rimeskeem3658d ago

Reminds me of Medal of Honor cutscenes

XabiTheHumble3658d ago

Its in game, you can see the flat textures on his top eyelid.

darren_poolies3657d ago

Those eyelid texture are going to completely ruin the game for me, looks so last gen. /s

Ken853657d ago

Eyelid textures?? Really....

NarooN3658d ago

Honestly my beef isn't with CoD's graphics. They're okay enough besides the terrible art direction some games have (like the venerable Ghosts, where the colors are so washed out you can't even distinguish enemies from the environment).

My beef is moreso with the actual gameplay, stuff like the abhorrent hit-detection, non-existent gun balance, over-abundance of useless perks and killstreaks, the terribly-optimized netcode, etc. If they can fix all of that stuff, the stuff that's actually important, then MAYBE I'd show some interest in this next game.

But hell, it doesn't matter what they do, it literally cannot be worse than Ghosts.

GordonKnight3657d ago

Was Ghost really that bad? I've never played a COD game. Alway got my FPS fix with Halo until Titanfall. Now The Division & Destiny have my attention.

Since I missed out on COD, are any of them worth playing today?

BoriboyShoGUN3657d ago

The reason they don't improve the actual game is because people keep buying the damn thing. What did you guys seriously expect???? For gods sakes they were talking about fish AI!!!!! I was upset they got BO1 and BO2 out of me, I should of stopped at MW2.

Matt6663657d ago (Edited 3657d ago )

Some how I doubt that be in game game, if anything it be another copy and paste game yet loads of people will continue supporting the series by buying the game and the COD creators will keep making the same game because people will continue to buy it so they won't change or fix it.

I doubt it's going to change, your still going to have the same issues as of with every other COD, which are the following;
Lagg,
Very poor hit detection,
over the top aim-assist,
quick scoping,
no-scoping,
the knife being the most powerful weapon on the game,
small boring maps,
6V6 game modes,
no tanks, (they where in WAW so why not anymore),
stupid perks like commando, unlimited sprint etc,
80% of the weapons would of been in previous COD's (time for some new weapons or least more variety),
Still not being able to see your body or legs when looking down (you could see your legs in the first Halo)

Until they fix them issues I not even going to touch it.

BoriboyShoGUN3657d ago

Exactly!! The damn consumers keep buying this garbage! Why would they change a damn thing? I'm still upset that I supported them as long as I did :(

MadLad3657d ago

Ghost's "in-game" screens looked pretty damn impressive as well. As it turns out, however, the game was damn ugly.
I trust nothing until it is in my hands. That's to say I even care about the idea of a CoD that wasn't developed by Treyarch.

TitanUp3657d ago

actually looking forward to this cod game havent played 1 since modern warfare 3

Zombro3657d ago (Edited 3657d ago )

That would be awsome if they made a cod rts game. Orrrrrrr anyone makes some rts games

Vladplaya3657d ago

If that's going to be in game, it won't matter, nobody cares about that level of detail in action shooter game. Even if the game engine can render a single soldier or two with that much detail, but when you will be playing the game, there will be so much stuff to render, that amount of detail will have to be dropped. This is just a misleading eyecandy for the sake of hype, nothing else.

Also helmet straps are confirmed!

3657d ago
frostypants3657d ago (Edited 3657d ago )

Yeah, it's "in-game"...as of the current build of the game that probably lacks most other assets, effects, etc. As soon as they get the other stuff in and start needing to get the framerate up, kiss that detail goodbye. Just like we see with every game.

They should focus some time on eyes. Always look lifeless.must be difficult to program for like hair lol

RevXM3657d ago

Made me think of MGS4.
MGS4 is the first game that impressed me with how good the eyes were. they looked just astonishing at the time.

Darth Gamer3658d ago

Impressed but, It could look like the best graphics ever and I still won't be buying it unless they overhaul the gameplay by leaps and bounds. (and that is coming from someone who has bought every COD game)

ThichQuangDuck3658d ago

Someone who cares about gameplay rather than graphics, resolution or asking what console this is running on. Are you sure you are on the right website? THIS IS OBVIOUSLY RUNNING ON A PS5

Wingsfan243658d ago

The game play really doesn't need to be changed. The shooting is still the most fluid on the market, they've added some more movement elements overtime which I think can still be refined and added to, but the game play mechanics are top notch. Now, if you're talking about campaign structure and story than I can agree with you there.

Honestly, I've been playing MW2 a bunch lately and the online portion of that is still the peak of the series I believe while Black Ops 2 campaign is the peak of the series on that end.

hkgamer3657d ago

gamesplay over graphics?!?! am i reading this correctly?
lol. just dont read that so often on this site, caught me offguard.

the design of the game wont change drastically, it has to keep close to the cod design, they cant be too different between each iteration unless they decided that this one would change the design for future iterations aswell.

silkrevolver3658d ago

They said it's part of a new 3-year development cycle... but I think they also have 3 different dev teams working on CoD, sooooo..... nothing to see here.

Call me when Activision Stops Guitar Hero-ing everything to death.
