Codemasters Talks Ps3 Grid Vs. Xbox 360

Gavin Raeburn, who is one of the devs for Codemasters behind the upcoming game Grid, discusses a few differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. He also touches upon how the final product will be much better than the demo.

It's not as easy as that. Development costs money. The more time you spend on developing the more it cost and the risk of the game not being as profitable rises.
If you on the other hand releases an almost complete game you start earning money and you can spend those at improving the game.
Also, keep in mind that just about every product out there needs polishing at some time so if you are waiting for the game to become fully complete before releasing it you will never release it. You are literally never finished with a piece of software. There are always improvements to be done. The question is, when is the game good enough to yield the profit wanted? That's the most important factor in deciding when it's time to release the product.

Anyway, from what you're saying the development teams need to focus on just one system and use the money to the best of its capability so developing for the 360 only hurts games in the long run, right?

Never played Madden 08 and I'm not planing to do it either.

It depends on the structure of the company developing the games. If everybody in the company works with all platforms yes the game might suffer from being multi platform. If the company on the other hand has dedicated teams for each platform it's not so sure. If we have one team specialized on PS3 they won't necessarily be able to do so much good on the 360-version if the company decides to drop the PS3-version. So dropping one platform won't necessarily mean the other version will gain in quality but it might.

However, even if the quality will suffer from being a multi platform, from an economical standpoint it's not sure it's wise to drop one of the platforms. More platforms the game is available on = more potential buyers.

Once again I agree with you. It is good to hear that both consoles will be getting solid versions of this game and are almost sounding identical. The acquisition of the F1 license should make that a must buy as well in the future if we are taking anything we have learned from this game so far.

It's really not bad considering how far along they're coming with the PS3 hardware. It still plays excellent on that console, and the differences between the 360 and PS3 are so minimal to even be judged.

In my book Codemasters did an excellent job for PS3, 360, and PC for GRID.

Do people remember the kind of articles and fanboy comments that came out back in 2006?

I will say that codemasters have done an amazing job on the pc.
DL the demo to see how it plays after seeing the 360 version and was able to run at 1920x1080 will the most constant frame rate i have seen from a new game on the pc.

Absolutely astounding. I cannot wait to see what they can do with the game engine for f1 and further afield when they've had more time to play with it.

Every game that comes out continues to prove that PS3 is not MORE POWERFUL, the cell might have some advantages but it still can't outdo the 360. The GPU on the PS3 always has been, and always will be inferior to the 360.

This game is gonna be fun, even if the PS3 has more framerate drops than the 360 version. Codemasters knows what the heck they are doing, I think they are doing the best with each platform.

The comparisons between Xbox 360 and PS3 Multiplatform games mean literally nothing to me unless the developer actually leads development on both consoles. Games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue blows GRID away. It's obvious that PS3 exclusives look better and run better than nearly all 3rd party multiplatform games.

I played it on both, runs well on both, looks good on both.

Yes, I've seen Lilzone. Looks good. So what? Its an exclusive so I have no idea if it could look better on a 360. By the same token, I have no idea if Gears 2 would run better on a PS3. As someone said the GPU in the PS3 is slightly inferior to the one on the 360. Its common knowledge, search for it.

As for the Cell aiding the CPU, thats true. But if you think you are going to see amazing things from outer space in the PS3 you're dreaming. The evolution will be just like the evolution in the PS2: things will look better over time with devs learning more and more how to use the hardware, but it wont be a shocking evolution. The Cell isn't a magic wand.

As for MGS4 "showing me what a game must to look like", just look at these textures:

I've seen better environmental textures than these low-rez textures 5 years ago on PC games. I'm certainly waiting for this game to come out and get it on its first day, but trying to say that the "power of the PS3 has only been scratched!" or "PS3 games are only using 1% of the PS3 POWERZZ!" aren't going to make it better than what it is and you are only fooling yourselves.

some people over the internet said that the 360 GPU is better than the PS3 and you blindly believe them? Remember how first gen 360 games just looked a litle better than xbox originals? Im not saying the PS3 GPU is better... only UNCHARTED looks way better than anything on 360, but dont understimate something thats new, hard to develope for and already looks on par and sometimes better than the 360.

Second...Gears2 doesnt look wayyy!! better than the first. To me its the same game with a different art aproach. Thats not saying it didnt look as good as the first, contrary to that it looked more colorfull with better ligthning but with the same stiffy animation. Dont expect something vastly superior to the first Gears. Anyway I believe the best looking 360 game was BIOSHOCK.

Third... Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 and other are great examples of PS3 development. HAZE is an exeption as it looks worse than some multiplat. Multiplat are looking as good on each console and lately some look better on PS3...(GTA4, DMC4, PARADISE). So its only a matter of time. So to you guys...just compare GOW2 to any first gen PS2 game and its clearly an improvement, not like the diference between 1st and 3rd 360 ones. I expect the same for the PS3. Yeah its still behind but games like GRID are REALLY closing the gap.

Juuken, with all due respect, but why would I be just mad because its only on the PS3? I OWN a PS3 and I said I would get MGS4 first day for sure. I also have an high-end PC. I have no 360 neither do I plan to buy one. So I'm mad at what exactely?

And "Lilzone" was a writting mistake, not on purpose. I was even thinking that you were talking to someone else there. Yes, kilzone looks good, but it's not blowing me away. Maybe thats because I'm used to what PCs have to offer for the last two decades and Killzone hasn't showed me anything new in any front. I've been playing the full PS3 retail version since sunday and can safely say that the framerate does not run at 30fps 99% of the time. Whilst it is better than the demo there are still some serious issues on the street tracks that need to be patched. Whilst it hasn't stopped me from enjoying a simply unbelievably fun game, it has convinced me to trade it in for the 360 version on friday (whose demo was smooth as) and i guess i've got a headstart over all the 360 owners track knowledge now for online!!

Very informative. I knew that the rsx was bolted on at the last minute due to the cell not being capable to produce results graphically speaking that were adequate and cost effective at the same time.

But its really interesting to read an article from an ATI employer who has alot of experience/knowledge in the gpu field.

So far GT is the only game ive seen that i have thought wow that looks better than anything ive seen before. But having played realsied that the enviroments have been made barren and devoid of any life and the enviroment is not interactive (tyre marks not made on surfaces,no damage to cars,no weather effects.) Also the online does not seem to beable to run smoothly with the graphics. The lag/jumping around is bad.

Someone posted a link to MGS4 SCREEN SHOTS and well the textures and facial details are lacking cp to some games we have already seen this generation. I know that Mgs4 will be a stella game from previous titles/reviews/previews but graphically it does not make me feel exactly confident in Ps3's capabilities to produce games not possible on the 360.

Just look at the textures on Gears 2 hd pics. we still dont know how big the enviroments will be for gears/mgs4 so i know the cp is not exactly fair but still if the PS3 is capable of blowing away the competition graphically surely i'd be looking at the MGS4 screen shots and thinking wow not seen anything like this before.

Instead im thinking wow gears 2 facial details look amazing and the enviroment textures also look amazing in cp to MGS4. I know graphics do not soley determine wheter a game is AAA but for me if id bought a PS3 over a 360 i'd want to see more/better for my money or at least somthing that looks better than the competitors exc.

GRID looks practically the same on both although framerate stability differs between the 2. Seems with mp your best bet is to go with the 360 unless in the rare case the game was built for the PS3 and then ported.

Grid was made from the ground up for both consoles as was COD4/DMC4 and from what we have seen the textures in all these games look better(although by a small margin) and framerate issues were present in Grid and Gta4 (even though it was downgraded in res.)

What are the reasons for this???
