Man, I hope this doesn't lead to a trend in selling overpriced demos.

aaron58293662d ago

as much as i love gt and mgs series... i think "prologues" are bad. but i am an idiot. i bought them anyway... for "collection" sake. :/

randomass1713662d ago

Nah, you're not an idiot. You had a reason to buy it and you're not insulting me for having my opinion on it. That's commendable enough in my book. :)

hay3661d ago

That's 610k excluding Europe.
I feel ashamed to be one of those numbers, Konami assurance it's longer than 2 hours did the trick, I did not expect it to be so much shorter...

To hell with this prologue BS. I will have my "revengeance" on Phantom Pain.

ZodTheRipper3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

I played it for about 12 hours in total and I'm happy with my purchase ...it's a game for fans and for them it has high replayability. But I certainly don't want this to become a trend ...most other franchises wouldn't get away with this - MGS & Kojima are expections because I enjoyed MGS 1-4 immensly :)

SoapShoes3661d ago

The difference is GT prologues have more content than 99% of all other racing games.

FITgamer3661d ago

I'm waiting for The Phantom Pain to release before i pick up Ground Zeroes. Hopefully by then it'll be like $10-$15 or bundled.

General Shrooms3661d ago

It can be done right, Dead Rising: Case Zero for example

BattleAxe3660d ago

278,000 copies isn't exactly blowing the doors off of the sales charts, so it's tough to say if other developers would try to pull this kind of crap.

Basically in order to enjoy the full experience of a game these days, developers are asking people to spend much more money on one game (and receiver far far less), which means that gamers will ultimately be buying fewer games. In my opinion this will lead to a collapse of the AAA video game market.

Mass Effect 3 and Far Cry 3 were the last games I bought on release day. I'll probably buy GTA5 when it comes to Steam, and I might buy Watch_Dogs on release. I'm keeping an eye out on some other games like Evolve, Batman: Arkham Knight, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Division, Alien Isolation, The Golf Club and Destiny. Destiny is the one game that has me a bit concerned with regards to micro-transactions.

NovusTerminus3662d ago (Edited 3662d ago )

I don't expect this to catch on. If it was the GT: Prologue would have started it. But after all these years MGS:GZ is the only other one.

If something "starts" this trend it will be DayZ and H1Z1 and all the other "Early Access" demos for $20 and $30

randomass1713662d ago

Aren't those supposed to be alphas to help the developers finish the game though?

NovusTerminus3662d ago (Edited 3662d ago )

Part of what Ground Zeroes is stated to be, a teaser and a way for him to get widespread feedback for tweaking and finishing the game up.

Kickstarters are for funding, Alpha's are supposed to be for testing, beta's are (Apparently) pre-order / purchase incentive (Doom 4, Destiny, Battlefield 4 and several more beta's)

Depending on how you look at it, Ground Zeroed was just a $30 early access, just like DayZ is. But yet is viewed differently, however it was never advertised as anything more.

mhunterjr3662d ago

@randomass171

Instead of paying testers to help developers finish the game with assured qualtiy, they are charging fans to help.

It's crazy how that pendulum swung. I get it that an indie dev would be using this method to help fund development, and mitigate risk by having a invested focus group. But to me, it seems exploitive for a big company to charge their biggest fans to help fix their games.

AC2020x3661d ago

I'd be fine with early access demos charging for money. It gives support to the DEVS that you like.

Bob Dole3661d ago

In Day Z $30 gets you Alpha access, Beta access, AND the full game when it releases. If you had to repurchase calling it an "early access" demo would make sense, but that simply isn't the case.

Panthers3661d ago

The idea of spending money in Alpha and Beta is becoming common and I hate it. Hearthstone and Heros of the Storm are doing it as well.

Not to mention Kickstarter. Paying for something that is not even being made yet.

OrangePowerz3660d ago

There is no problem with early access. You pay for it and get the full game and alpha and beta before it's finished. Also for companies that have a limited budget that's a way to finance the development without having to go to a publisher.

So I wouldn't call early access paid demos because you get the full package.

Ground Zeroes sold 50% on PS4 and 20% on Xbox One.

I reckon this trend will continue with FFXV and KH3

randomass1713661d ago

Sigh. I sure as heck hope not. :/

PONTIAC08G8GT3661d ago

Duh, the trend will continue when there are more PS4's then X1's. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that math.

ArchangelMike3661d ago

I have a feeling that EU numbers will be similar to NA numbers, and also with the PS4 / XbOne split.

PrinceOfAllSaiyans3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

Yea those 3 games have way bigger fan bases on PlayStation consoles.

Darrius Cole3661d ago

FFV and KH3 will have more than 50% of their sales on the PS4. They'll both be closer to 66% PS4, 33% Xbone, maybe more.

If a person cares for any game remotely close to Final Fantasy, they would be more likely to have a Playstation than an Xbox even if the Playstation costs more. Since the Playstation is less this time such a person will be much more likely to have a Playstation.

At least Metal Gear Solid is about guns and soldiers even though Snake plays shadow games. Xbox fans like guns and soldiers. Final Fantasy is about, well, Fantasy...Japanese-styled Fantasy. Xbox fans don't give a crap about that.

No_Limit3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

Doesn't matter, as long as these games are made multiplat, single console owners get to enjoy them regardless of the disparity split.

maybe people liked the game , cuz they didn't just speedrun it in 2 minutes? im over 10 hours and still have about 60% done

Kivespussi3661d ago

There's speedrunning, then there's those guys who search every corner... But average gamer is somewhere in between. Most likely an average playthrough takes a lot less than 10h. Maybe 5? I don't really know since I don't want to buy this

smashman983660d ago

Well let me open your eyes kivespussi. I was messing around and beat it in 54 min. I went back to do a more focused play through and did it in 12 min I can't imagine anyone would take more than 3 hours in the main mission camp omega is really small

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

I can't see how it will. Not many games can even touch the quality of MGS games. Every review said it too. Mechanically, and graphically, and technically it was great. Just short.

Let's say anyone else tries this? It will definitely crash and burn.

AsheXII3661d ago

As long as its "missable" Like Ground Zeroes was im fine with prologues, specially in games that take 5 years to release.

I would kill for a FFXV prologue ;)

Timesplitter143661d ago

I'm at 11 hours in GZ so far and I still love playing it. 11 hours is more than the time I spent in games like God of War or Uncharted.

For 20$ it's completely worth it. You don't play demos for that long

smashman983660d ago

I'm glad you enjoyed it that's what matters but I'm gonna have to completely disagree with you there is way more potential playtime in uncharted and god of war than in ground zeroes wayyyy more

S2Killinit3661d ago

I didnt buy it for that very specific reason

1nsomniac3661d ago

It'll lead exactly to that, that was the whole point of releasing it like that in the first place.

So you can thank the people who bought it, for all future paid demos.

mt3661d ago

I didn't buy it because i believe we shouldn't support this kind of gaming. I'll wait for next metal gear and I am sure it will be included as a bounce. even thought it is hard since I am big fan of metal gear.

HeroReborn3661d ago

It wasn't a demo the was a good amount of replay value. We as gamers shouldn't feel as if we are entitled to freebies all the time. For those of us that are fans of the series it's a great small sample of what is to come.
To think that the folks who gave their time to making that sample shouldn't be compensated means we only want more game devs to fall. If you want things to be free go grab and play test some indie games there always looking for feedback.

MysticStrummer3661d ago

It's not a demo, therefore it won't lead to a trend in selling overpriced demos.

SnotyTheRocket3661d ago

Not a Demo. play it. And don't say "OMFG, BUT DaH SP33D RuNz are 5mins!!!##??" I've played for many hours and I've only got 44% of things done.

Blasphemy3661d ago

People are just itching for more mgs. We haven't had a proper mgs game in almost 6 years

vishmarx3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

around 200k in japan
add that to all digital sales .

Matt6663661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

Ok it's not a demo, it's a prologue to the other MGS 5 and they made it short because they didn't want to give to much away. Furthermore if you actually play it like a stealth game instead of running around and shooting everyone in sight the game last longer. If you complain about how sort this game is you might as well complain about Battle Filed length of it's campaign and other games that charge £40 for a 4 hour campaign.

Gamer19823661d ago

Gotta love how they put the Xbox One and ps4 sales numbers together to hide just how bad it sold on Xbox One.

wow just wow

bornsinner3661d ago

Kojima is such an a hole, charging for a demo, lets hope no other big franchises do the same thing. it's people like him that gives us enough reason to pirate games.

2pacalypsenow3661d ago

Gran turismo 5 did it and no one bitched about it as much as MGS

SoapShoes3661d ago

difference is GT prologue had more content than 99% of all other racing games. 73 cars is a lot for any racing game just not for GT

cee7733661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

@soap and 2pac

gt5 prologue got the same treatment:
http://arstechnica.com/gami...

not to mention gt5:p launched @ $40
$20 to $40 more than mgs:gz
mind you gt5:p launched over 5 years ago with inflation it would cost at-least $50 by today's standards.

Neither game is A demo, because demos do not allow you to retain progress throughout it or earn trophies or achievements, these games were A taste for each respectable fan base.

You all act as if it was $59.99 game you the buyers knew what you where getting into before you purchased the game.

MysticStrummer3661d ago

No matter how many people call it a demo, it still isn't one.

Hicken3661d ago

But they'll keep doing it, and keep saying it'll create some type of trend.

Just like they keep saying Playstation has no games. Just like they keep believing in secret sauce.

And they'll keep being wrong, too.

But they'll keep at it, even knowing that.

smashman983660d ago

Even kojima compared this game to a demo

incendy353661d ago

I have to admit, that I loved this demo.

Timesplitter143661d ago

Except it's not a demo. It lasts as long as many full-priced AAA games, it's full of unlockables, and the story is self-contained.

It's more of a DLC that appears before the main game. It's literally as though TLOU:Left Behind was released before the main game, but it's 5$ more and lasts longer

HappyWithOneBubble3661d ago

This is no different than buying DLC but people don't complain about DLC. GZ is basically very early DLC and I enjoyed it.

ABizzel13661d ago

Problem is it was priced like a DLC season pass, and not a standalone DLC download. It should have been $10 - $20 MAX, not $30, but that's why I tell everyone to just rent it from Redbox for the day and send it back.

greenking453661d ago

"rent it from redbox" or buy it second hand, play it & sell it on. :)

Nyxus345d ago

I know right? And rerelease the games for current gen systems while they're at it.

just_looken344d ago

Do not worry they will give use those pichincko remakes for top dollar soon.

Metal gear solid 3 in the fox engine looked/ran amazing but was sealed away :(

Sarcasm344d ago

I know re-makes and stuff have been played to death this generation.

But damn I wouldn't mind an MGS4 remake

gold_drake344d ago

i played it quite recently and it holds up very well

CantThinkOfAUsername343d ago

It does, but a remake will be available on platforms other than PS3.

itsmebryan344d ago

I thought the series would have sold more over all these years and different releases.

Ready4nxtgen344d ago

Yeah I would have thought over 150 Mil. Something.missing here

Nyxus344d ago

Metal Gear isn't that big, and there hasn't been a new release in years. Also MGS2 and 3 are still missing from digital storefronts.

shinoff2183344d ago

5 mgs games in total if I'm not mistaken. 59 60 million seems about right. Mgs is dope to some of us but it would be hard for a lot of regulars to understand

ChasterMies344d ago

I would love to buy MGS4 but it’s still a PS3 exclusive.

JEECE344d ago

Although there are notable exceptions (GTA, certain first-party Nintendo games, Gran Turismo), as a rule games didn't sell as much in earlier generations as they have in the past few generations. So a lot of PS1-PS2 era titles that are viewed as seminal games didn't actually sell all that much by today's standards (yes, despite the large install bases of those systems lol). I remember a similar surprised reaction happening a few months ago when Square announced the total overall sales of Final Fantasy VII.

Deathdeliverer344d ago

Some of the best fun you can have online was the first metal gear online and to a lesser, but still fun to an extent, MGO2. The magazine, CQC, stealth, and tactical play Vs real players is just a blast. Not to mention playing Snake vs everyone? Amazing. The game will never be the same without Hideo, but Konami can definitely update what’s already there and take my money.

ceyoga344d ago

You wouldn't be talking about the OG MGO that was included with MGS3:S would you? It's rare running into another former player. Those were some of the best memories of any online game I had.

Deathdeliverer344d ago

Yes my man!! That seems like the BEST game that nobody played! Tranquilizer pistol, drag the body to a corner and lay a girly mag right by their head so they wake up and instantly get caught by the mag. You could get real toxic if you wanted at that point, but man that game was incredible! The only thing annoying was that damn Konami ID

Kojima looks back on Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes on its 9th anniversary

Hideo Kojima: "After the launch, many people seemed to expect GZ to be a full game."

People would have gotten “your intention” if you stated it from the beginning but people didn’t want smaller episode like MGS games.

He should have just focused on MGSV and work Ground Zeroes into that game instead

I_am_Batman402d ago

I don't remember there being confusion over Ground Zeroes being a full game. But then again I was just starting to catch up on the MGS series as a whole at that point so I might've not paid enough attention or simply have forgotten that there was confusion about it. I bet the whole Moby Dick Studios thing didn't help the casual observer understand what the hell was going on though.

I only got both MGSV games when Phantom Pain was already out and I kinda agree that it probably would've sucked if I had to wait one and a half years to pay The Phantom Pain after Ground Zeroes.

jambola402d ago

I'm sorry what now?
Who expected that?
If it was meant to be episodic or an experiment for that, the price should / would have reflected that

MadLad402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

To be fair, there really wasn't enough content to actually justify even the smaller price tag. It was still half the cost of a full game, yet a 20th of the content.

I can't stand these paid glorified demos.

CrimsonWing69402d ago

Honestly, it was basically similar to the FF15 Duscae demo. My theory is he was taking too damn long to make a game and Konami was like, “Sell what you got!” It just has kind of a scummy corporate “let’s sell this demo for half the price of a full game,” feel to it.

That’s just my take on it. I love Kojima and I love the MGS series, but this and 5 were the biggest let downs, ever. Clearly unfinished work forced out because, in Konami’s defense, Kojima was going over budget and taking forever on the project.

MIDGETonSTILTS17402d ago

Lol, I loved Ground Zeroes, but releasing that level at $40 during a dryspell for games at the onset of the new gen was an obvious cash grab.

I handed over my money happily, but plenty of non-diehard fans were understandably letdown by the scale of what $40 bought them.

Chocoburger402d ago

The price was originally $40 for the physical PS4 and XBO versions, but due to controversy it dropped down to $30 before launch. And as much as I love GZ, and even bought it twice, I do agree that $30 was too much. It should have launched at $20.

https://kotaku.com/konami-c...

staticall402d ago

I don't know how about anyone else. But i've bought it for $20 1 week after release (or $15, don't remember the exact exchange rate) and spent 24 hours beating every mission and getting all the steam achievements. I was 100% aware what the game was about beforehand though and i did enjoy every second of it. I knew it was a work in progress and it was probably the best and less restrictive game i've played in a long time (and controls were just perfect).

Even previous MGS games didn't gave me that much freedom as Ground Zeroes did.
Love stealth? Got you covered.
Want to speedrun? Here's the timer.
Wanna kill everyone? No problem, grab that AK then and let's party.
Wanna cause chaos? Just tell Pequod where to land.
Love to drive? Then go ahead.
Miss Raiden? Then play as him.

I wish they would continue MGSV, finish remaining chapters and add more missions as DLCs, there was SO many options... A poor man still can dream...

Metal Gear Solid V Is The Greatest Stealth Game Ever Made

Hideo Kojima was dealing with a hostile publisher who was pulling his team’s game apart at the seams in order to launch in some form of finished state, and it’s still downright masterful. Everything about it is mechanically focused and aesthetically nuanced, and not a single thing feels out of place or without purpose. Big Boss moves about each environment with a pace that provides the perfect cadence to use all manner of gadgets in whatever ways you like.

You are incorrect and I will be taking this time to correct you. The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Forsaken Fortress is stealth that no game has yet to match. Having Link, crawl, sneak and hide under a barrel is innovative stealth that Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Thief and Tenchu wish they had achieved. I rest my case.

-Foxtrot574d ago

Shit Metal Gear Solid game though

It's boring, empty, repetitive

Great mechanics and gameplay but it's just so dull....

575d ago
Chard575d ago

I played it long after the hype had settled, and I had a blast with it. Strip away the disappointment over what it could have been, and you're still left with a great game

porkChop575d ago

The gameplay loop was phenomenal, no question. From a gameplay standpoint it's an incredible stealth game.

porkChop575d ago

"Hideo Kojima was dealing with a hostile publisher who was pulling his team’s game apart at the seams in order to launch in some form of finished state, and it’s still downright masterful."

Let's not pretend Kojima was entirely innocent there. The game was 5+ years into development, way over budget, and wasn't even halfway done. That's why Chapter 2 is so unfinished and Chapter 3 was scrapped entirely. He was wasting time micromanaging and second-guessing everything his team was doing, and little to no progress was being made. The same thing happened with MGS: Rising. That's why the game got rebooted as MGR: Revengeance and was handed off to Platinum. That's the only way the game was going to get finished. And yet after wasting millions on a scrapped game, MGR only went on to sell a little over 1 million units. It was a failure no matter how you look at it.

That's why Kojima was "locked away" in his office for the final 6 months of development of MGSV. So the team could actually piece together and finish the game. Was Konami just supposed to let Kojima spend more than a decade with infinite funds to make one game? Kojima isn't Rockstar, his games don't sell 170+ million units. At some point the game has to come out.

I get that Konami are a garbage company but they aren't solely responsible for what happened with Kojima. As much as I love his games and will always be a fan, MGSV was almost entirely Kojima's fault and I'm tired of people pretending that it wasn't.

MIDGETonSTILTS17574d ago

Sounds like mismanagement by Konami.

generic-user-name574d ago

Can you prove any of what you're claiming? Because I've seen Kojima build a studio and release a AAA game in 3 years with Death Stranding. All I'm seeing here are the same conspiracy theories that people like to believe to confirm their biases towards certain people, same with Neil Druckmann. For instance, MGSV may have been in development for a while but you leave out that he was also having the FOX Engine developed alongside it, an engine so good that MGSV ran at 60fps on a PS4.

He's gone on record disputing that he ever goes over budget on very rarely has to delay his titles.

"He was wasting time micromanaging and second-guessing everything his team was doing, and little to no progress was being made."

Where did you get this from?

574d ago
Workshyskiver575d ago

Best gameplay of the series hand down, its not even close. Worst story in the series hand down, its not even close.

Ezio2048574d ago

But that ending though with amazing music. The Man who sold the world.

1Victor574d ago

I can’t say it’s the best or the worse to me I stopped playing metal gear at the end of 4 the official end of the snakes saga and the best in my book was 3 snake eater excellent gameplay and excellent story telling giving us the reason for big boss to go and create his own country before the metal gear saga on the 4-8 bits consoles.
