The Last of Us Remastered PS4 should offer an upgrade fee

When The Last of Us: Remastered launches on PlayStation 4 this summer, there should be more than one way to get it.

GarrusVakarian3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

For people who already own the game like myself, this would be ideal, but what about people who own the game but do not own the season pass? They would upgrade from the Standard edition to the remastered edition for, let's say, $10-15...but would be getting $30 worth of season pass content, which i don't think would sit right with Sony, lol.

I guess Sony could just see who has the season pass tied to their PSN account and who doesn't and price it accordingly? I guess that would work.

Soldierone3680d ago

They could just offer us the main game for 15 dollars, OR they could let us upgrade for 30 dollars to get the content too.

Personally I couldn't care less about the DLC, I don't ever play it online. The only one i'll buy (have bought) is the single player one.

1nsomniac3680d ago

The multiplayer is actually awesome. I've put more hours into the multiplayer than I have with the singleplayer & it's SP DLC you should really try it, your missing out.

Transporter473680d ago

Lst of Us MP is so fun! You need to try it, its addicting with the PS4 system omg I honestly can't wait. I have the Digital + DLC I hope for people like us which supported the game, either get a cheap upgrade or crossbuy.

gaffyh3680d ago

I honestly think that the only reason they haven't offered this yet is one of two reasons. Either:

a. They are worried that people will buy PS3 version cheap and then pay upgrade fee.

OR

b. They are waiting to announce at E3.

Either one could happen.

scott1823680d ago

The MP got to be my favorite part of the game. So fun and addictive.

darthv723680d ago

If sony did the upgrade program like call of duty, you pop in your PS3 disc to the Ps4 and it validates and lets you dl the full upgraded game for $30. That isnt to bad of an idea.

There is still time for sony to work out the legalities.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt3680d ago

nah screw that i myself have beaten the game back in June 2013.. and this is a business youve heard that many times.... if you want to double dip you Pay that simple..

stop trying to be cheap and asking for deals and shit.. they can Use that money for future 1st party exclusives... no one is forcing you to buy the game again if you want to play it again you pay 60 bucks for it or wait for a price drop that simple

kids are always trying to get a dam deal foh

NewMonday3680d ago

the upgrade program for games like CoD was to stop people delaying their purchase until the PS4 released. no reason for publishers to do it for mid 2013 games, Tomb Raider didn't do it and GTA5 will not do it.

I said that yesterday. The people that bought the season pass would feel ripped of knowing that someone could just pay 10 to get the remastered game plus all the extra content for practically free.

Cupid_Viper_33680d ago

More importantly, these expectations are only for SONY.

Keep in mind that Sony is the company that enrouged cross-buy for Titles on the both the PS3 & PS Vita, and that gives out tons of games a month for $4.16/monthly.

Let me put it in a different light for you guys. While other companies were busy cancelling last gen games to bring them to their next gen console, Sony took a big risk with a New IP's, and released them on a console that was nearing its end.

Sony could have easily shifted TLoU, Beyond Two Souls, GT6 on the PS4, but they didn't. And now that they're trying to rip the benefits of their investmen (like every other publisher has done without any problems) suddenly, $60 for what critics calls "The BEST OF Last Generation" is too much.

Meanwhile, no issues at all were reported for $60.00 for an online only game with no single play that came out not too long ago.

Chris123680d ago

@cupid funniest thing I've heard for ages. Sony took a huge risk releasing games on a console with an 80 million installed base rather than shift them to a new platform that has 6-7 million?. Riiiight.

Cupid_Viper_33680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

@chris

Yes, they took a huge releasing a new 2 new IPs (TLoU and Beyond:Two Souls) so close to the release of the PS4. There we so many people complaining that GT6 should have been a PS4 release.

The hype surrounding the PS4 since the February 2013 reveal could have easily taken the focus away the game. People had similar fears that GTA 5 was also way too late to the party being released so close to the new consoles.

http://www.nowgamer.com/new...

http://onehitpixel.com/2013...

http://www.metacritic.com/g... " it’s hard going back. Still, it’s hard to fault the game for being released too late and it remains another thoughtful, expertly crafted racing experience."

It was a huge risk to have your top first party studios work on PS3 Games while being so close to releasing the PS4. Had those games not flopped, it would have been 100s or millions of dollars down the drain on a console in its golden years.

Case in point part of the reason why MS removed Ryses, KI3, and DR3 from the Xbox 360 and released them on the Xbox One. It was just a safer bet.

Cupid_Viper_33680d ago

Had those games flopped....

To me, the absence of a positive does not make a negative. I bought the game on ps3 and enjoyed every second of it, so I don't feel like Naughty Dog owes every future iteration to me just because I bought in early. It's basically like buying an iPhone 4 & getting mad when the inevitable iPhone 5 drops and you don't get one for free. In the current games climate, Naughty Dog are easily one of the best devs around by far, so if there's any company that deserves a hard earned buck, it's one that also works equally hard to make sure the products they release are worthwhile. If TLOU on ps3 looked horrible and suffered because the devs were more focused on a ps4 port, then by all means, people have the reason to be upset, but that's not the case whatsoever. Would it be nice if anyone who bought the prior version gets the new one free? Sure, but Naughty Dog is a business and they need to justify the costs of their production by at least allowing for the potential for profit.

Thatguy-3103680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

Exactly you only bought the copy for said system. You can't expect to get perked up for future things that are involve with it especially when it's about it coming to another console. You don't like the price then simply don't buy it or wait until it gets discounted in the future. People need to stop thinking of ways they can get "compensated" for a product on a NEW platform.

miyamoto3680d ago

t's a PORT
not a remake.

A remastered port.

The Last of Us being a former "PS3 exclusive" has a different case compared to Tomb Raider.
I would consider TLOU PS4 version as a port not a remake because it was made with the PS4 imminent launch in mind. So Naughty Dog made the game's assets PS4 worthy.

"We always create our assets at a higher resolution than what you see in-game," Christophe Balestra told Eurogamer. "A lot of our pipelines are already ready to move to something superior to the PS3.”
http://www.examiner.com/art...

With regards to a sequel, Druckmann stated that, “It’s just like the DLC, we had the choice to do it or not to do it. Well, let’s figure out if it’s worth doing. Let’s see if we can get passionate about it, so that’s how we would approach The Last of Us 2. We will brainstorm and if there is something we can latch on to then yeah, we can do it,” he said to IGN in a lengthy video podcast.
Read more at http://gamingbolt.com/naugh...

“We had a lot of people on the forums saying ‘can I play this on PlayStation 4?’ We had actually been anticipating that, and started working on it pretty much as soon as we finished the PlayStation 3 [version]," he explained. "We weren’t sure if it was going to go anywhere, but when we saw the fans clamouring for it we doubled-down, and put more effort behind it.

I do agree for the upgrade feature. But for those gamers who are new to PlayStation & jumped in from other platforms full price is justifiable.

IamTheStorm813680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

My comments are not necessarily aimed at this article, more the crowd who's pissed off at the price:

People always seem to want something for free or something at a reduced price...I'm sorry, but I don't see it that way.

A re-release or not, work is going to be put back into the game to bring it to PS4, work that costs both time and money. If you like what you see enough to want to play this remaster, buy it when its price matches your interest. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy this remaster at $60. Yes, it will release for $60, but you don't have to buy it for that.

I'm tired of this entitlement that so many people have nowadays. Would it be nice to get this at a reduced price? Of course! Nobody wants to have to pay full price, but that's just not the way the world works.

Buy it if you want it and when its price matches your interest. If you don't think it's worth it at $60 then simply wait until it's cheaper. What's so hard to understand about that?

GarrusVakarian3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

"buy it when its price matches your interest"

Exactly this. I use that same philosophy for every single game i buy. It takes patience and a certain degree of strong will, but i would never go back to just blindly paying full retail for anything im interested in unless i know i won't regret it.

So if Sony end up not offering an upgrade price scheme, just pay what you think it's worth...unless you absolutely have to get it day one, lol.

HeWhoWalks3680d ago

Amen to this, my friend. Sense abound!

MetalProxy3680d ago

Agreed Mr.kingxtreme!! Couldnt be said any better.

Phils_Libra3680d ago

Totally agree w/kingxtreme81.

Look at the bright side, many gamers whom missed out on this gem on the PS3 will get an opportunity to play it, thus increasing the fanbase and in turn the likelihood of seeing a sequel sooner rather than later.

ColonelRex3680d ago

What you said, is something that needed to be said. This is a remastered game. That means developers put even more time and money into this game. Again, this is a remastered game. Not a port. If this was just a simple port, then I can understand not wanting to pay more than what the current PS3 game is.

Audiggity3680d ago

Your logic bomb temporarily disrupted space and time.

Well said.

LoveSpuds3680d ago

Have a bubble chief, couldn't have said it any better.

This sense of entitlement that people on the web seem to have these days drives me absolutely bonkers!

Mankey3680d ago

Hit the nail on the head.

N311V3680d ago

Exactly. I think of it like when a director's cut of a movie is released, nobody expects a discounted upgrade price for those. These remastered versions are for die hard fans and people that didn't play the game on PS3. I really liked Tomb Raider on the PS3 so I bought the Definitive edition. I really like The Last of Us so I'll be getting the remaster day one. I also own GTAV but I'm done with that game, if they released a remaster I wouldn't buy it nor would I expect an upgrade option just because I own the original.

jetlian3680d ago

phones even have upgrade options. And wanting options on a 99 percent similar products isnt an entitlement. this post is the reason the world is jacked up.

Would like to see a trade-in perhaps sorta like COD going from previous gen to next-gen for $10.

Galletto33680d ago

Not for a year old game. It made sense with COD because it was like a month turnover from the release of the game and next gen consoles. The retailers could still sell the returned games to players who were still on last gen systems, and it made even more sense that they could do that because it was right next to the holidays.

Soldierone3680d ago

Simple idea, only give it to players that have had the game registered to their account between a certain time frame.

That way all the morons that bum rush GameStop for it won't get anything.

Hell, do it for people that activated the "limited edition" content at least. Those people spent what $80 and up? Or perhaps even give a discount to season pass holders.

It's not free, Sony can still charge $15 to $30, so its not like they lose out. Plus this will be through PSN which means ALL that goes to them.

vega2753680d ago

I rather wait to it release on ps+ to get it. Not spending another $60 on the game. Especially since there isn't anything new besides graphic that calls for me to upgrade to the ps4 version

PhilJowns3680d ago

Just make enough fuzz Sony fans and Lord Shuhei will make it happen!

Maybe you can rope in your #PS4NODRM god FAMOUSMORTIMOR. He's looking for some attention since he last screw up!

Lol. 😁

The Last of Us Part 1 – Why The Ending is Still so Impactful

The Last of Us never dreams of insulting its audience’s intelligence. And the best example of this is, of course, is its ending.

shinoff2183512d ago

Shit the beginning was to. I'm not sure how I would feel if I didn't have kids but having them it broke my heart to see.

ClayRules2012512d ago

Yes. The beginning and ending…how they break you, make you think , question things etc. so impactful.

And yeah, I have a son (he’ll be going to college here next year) and just feeling Joel’s pain, heartbreak, loss…it hits you differently when you have a kid (s) of your own.

PhillyDillyDee512d ago

I didnt have kids when i played it and the beginning had me sobbing. That story left an impact on me

Orchard512d ago

The story was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Probably my 1st or 2nd most favorite game on PS3 (the other being MGS4).

Aloymetal512d ago

I agree with you. MGS4 was truly special, I wasn't the biggest fan of the long cutscenes but I understand is part of Kojima. Great game nonetheless.

Snookies12512d ago

Best Metal Gear game, coming from a HUGE fan of the series. I bought a PS3 JUST for MGS4. And got the collector's edition too. Worth every bit of money.

Yes, the cutscenes can be very lengthy. But a lot of it was quite necessary to really tie things together. Previous games had some longer cutscenes as well. It's just that they were trying to wrap everything up with MGS4. So, it's understandable that they'd have to throw some info dumps into the game here and there.

Orchard512d ago

The cutscenes are long indeed, every Kojima game sets a new record there :P

But the game was awesome, the second they showed that first E3 demo, it was clear it was going to be something special.

I still remember being mind blown by the Octocamo. It was also the first third person shooter game where I felt like the controls and aiming etc all went smooth / fluid and weren't janky. Hard to explain in words, but it felt 'natural' to aim, move etc in it.

gangsta_red512d ago

I thought the game went on a little too long and it started to wear thin. It should have stopped at Winter. That would have been a great way to end that game with the sequel continuing from there (if necessary).

-Foxtrot512d ago

I loved it however the ambiguous ending was kind of ruined in the sequel

The first game had this conflicting grey area of Joel's actions, a decision to let you think it over and discuss it with people, however the sequel created a narrative that "OMG JOEL 100% DOOMED HUMANITY...HOW SELFISH" and making out Ellie wanted to die in the hospital even though 1) She didn't know she was going to die and 2) She was ready to see Joel once she got out of surgery so he could teach her how to play Guitar.

For me he did the right thing, I mean they pretty much attacked him when he was trying to save Ellie, they lied to him and said they were going to kill her without thinking any other decision out or asking Ellie herself and they pretty much were going to throw him out onto the street without any of his weapons/gear where he could have probably died. There was no guarantee a cure could be made with these guys, it was all "chance".

Crows90512d ago

Exactly. He made the first good decision and this time around the girl he took care of didn't die while escaping...which alluded to the beginning of the game. He was prepared this time.

-Foxtrot512d ago

Like I just don't know why the Fireflies (and now Jerry in Part II) didn't think about any other tests, it was literally "Yeah this bitch has gotta die". You're telling me they couldn't wait for more blood tests, think of new ways to approach it? The worlds been gone for decades, it's not going to collapse even more by waiting, the damage is done.

If they woke Ellie up and asked her but Joel also told her what they did and were going to do to him I don't think she'd really want to sacrifice her life for these guys compared how she suddenly reacts in the sequel.

Even the hospital setting in the original game was run down, dirty and literally the best they could do, that alone didn't inspire confidence they had the tools to distribute a cure let along make one. I know the sequel and remake kind of retcon it where it looked cleaner, brighter and newer but again I'm going off the original, the first time I played it. The Fireflies at the end of the day were not good people, they were still terrorists with their own ambitious goals in mind, I don't think they would have been fair handing out the cure if they did get it made

TricksterArrow512d ago (Edited 512d ago )

It's a work of fiction, and more than once Bruce and Neil stated that the cure was a given, it was a sure thing and they regret not making it more clearly. If the cure wasn't a thing, the ending wouldn't ne nearly as impactful as is.

Crows90512d ago

@trickster
Except tlou2 states that it isnt a given. The ending is still impactful.

Inverno512d ago

Think the reason why she was going to die was because the guy was a vet, not a doctor

-Foxtrot512d ago

Yet suddenly was the only person who could create a cure

"We deffo need to kill her"

"Wait...WHY"

"Trust me....I'm a vet"

TricksterArrow511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

Jerry was a doctor. A lead doctor. His bio makes it clear that he attended Northern Utah Medical University. He just happened to like animals. I wonder if people really pay attention to the games they play anymore (if they played, it’s a toss with TLOU2’s critics)…

Imalwaysright511d ago

TricksterArrow

You should play the PS3 version. Once you do, you'll realize that the ending was retconned because Jerry wasn't the surgeon that was going to kill Ellie.

TricksterArrow511d ago

I played all versions. He was not a vet in any of them.

Imalwaysright511d ago

He was not in the original version of the game but the "Jerry" that Joel killed in the original clearly wasn't someone that acted professionaly or inspired confidence because he was willing to work in a dirty operating room and was wearing boots.

TricksterArrow511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

Jerry was a minor unnamed role that got expanded on the sequel and also got recast, not unlike any TV series and games before this one (such as Resident Evil, in which Claire, Leon, Carlos and Chris all look considerably different from one iteration to the other). Also, still not a vet. And also unsure what argument you are trying to make by “dirty room” and “wearing boots”. He is still a doctor that has the ability to develop a cure, it doesn’t matter what he is wearing or what tools are at his disposal, the story is what it is.

ChubbyBlade512d ago

That’s why I didn’t like part 2. It removed all the nuance

Inverno512d ago

I think when you realize he's a vet, Joel's decision feels a bit more justified for those who played both games. Just playing, since you're in Joel's shoes, you don't really question it. Then playing the second there's a justification that doesn't take away from Joel's decision but for the player should reinforce your understanding of it.

You said it in the second comment. "The Fireflies at the end of the day were not good people, they were still terrorists with their own ambitious goals in mind." That's why they just went along with killing her cause they didn't want to figure out some other way.

shinoff2183511d ago

Foxtrot

I think they just tried to show you how Joel's decision affected more then just Joel and ellie . Just showing different angles and a bigger picture. I think Joel did the right thing.

The story had me emotionally engaged. Gaming for 40 years it was the first time a game story messed with my emotions in the way movies do. As far as the game and gameplay? Not so much lol. It wasn’t bad in my opinion but the game itself was ok. It was the storyline that kept me going in TLOU 1 and TLOU 2.

ClayRules2012512d ago

“As far as the game and gameplay? Not so much lol. It wasn’t bad in my opinion but the game itself was ok.“

What exactly did the game do that qualifies it for just being ok? And same question for the gameplay?

dmonee511d ago

That’s a tough question because I could ramble on and on as to why. I’m speaking for myself because I usually pass on survival horror type games. So instead of getting into a debate as to why I found the gameplay to be ok. I originally commented on how the narrative had me emotionally sucked in. Especially the opening segment. So much that I purchased a game I would never have purchased if not for the story. It’s more kudos to the developer for getting people like me out of my comfort zone to play a game I wouldn’t usually play.

ClayRules2012512d ago

I know some people were upset with Joel lying to Ellie (friends of mine) that they felt it should’ve given the player an option to have Joel either

A. Lie to Ellie or B. Tell Ellie the truth. Type of situation, which just makes no sense. The game nor its story doesn’t given the player any control to have/make any choices that change the direction or outcome of ANY of these characters in this unforgiving and dark world.

I don’t blame Joel for doing what he did.

1. Ellie became the “Something” that he needed to keep fighting for, beyond just living day to day, simply being survivors.

2. Marlene gave orders to that no -name guard to kill Joel if he tried anything…you just done pissed him off all the more with those words. I wonder, if Joel had been killed and Marlene ever came across Tommy again (Joel’s brother) would she have the guts to tell him “Listen Tommy, we need to talk! About Joel…I couldn’t waste this gift. Tommy “What the hell you talking about, Marlene??” Marlene “I had Joel killed, if he” Tommy “YOU SON OF A BITCH!” Got carried away there lol. You get the idea tho. To my point, it wasn’t guaranteed that Ellie was the cure, and after all Joel did, went through, not even allowing Joel to see Ellie, just talk with her, that’s messed up.

3. Of course looking at the actions Joel took in the hospital and how that has major consequences in Part 2 for him, Ellie etc. it’s not like there wouldn’t have been a big threat later on at some point. This world is wicked, dark, unforgiving and everyone’s growing up, has their own WANTS. NEEDS. DESIRES. Solely for themselves, loved ones, or group. All while trying to survive.

Joel I think knew when he said “I Swear” that he’d done something much worse than when he actually saved Ellie from that operating room and possibly causing death to humanity (as if it would be appreciated anyways.

Yes, he lied to the one person who gave him purpose to live, purpose to have hope, purpose to be that father again (which he of course wasn’t looking for, but it just naturally happened upon him) like he was to his daughter Sarah all those years ago. And to him, maybe in that moment, lying would be worth the little bit of time, the years they’d have together creating memories, seeing Ellie grow up before his eyes etc. rather than lie to her and see a reaction in words and deeds in which she might’ve ran off losing all hope and trust in him etc. I mean, she did lose trust in him all those years later etc. but as we saw, she was willing to work with him, try to repair what Joel broke, and he knew it wouldn’t be easy, as did she. But with time she understood I think why he did what he did.

It’s just sad in the end, his lie, the time they lost with his betrayal, and than horrific death, caused Ellie to go seek revenge in a way in which Ellie changed, she kept chipping off more of herself along the journey, scary and sad thing to see, and exhausting. But powerful storytelling throughout it all.
