Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Review | gamrReview

gamrReview's Joseph Trotter: "In short, Gaiden Z is a disaster. In an attempt to re-think the series after the third recent installment, the creators have swung so far conceptually the other way that it is almost unrecognisable. Gone is the grace and beauty of combat; now thuggish death slams and high-fiving are in. Gone is the charm and likeable hero; instead welcome Yaiba, the epitome of all that is wrong with gaming design. At every stage, except for the wonderful graphics, Gaiden Z has been horrifically misjudged. Don't make the same mistake."

Dang... I'll still rent this, I think. It seems interesting enough in spite of the low scores I've seen.

kevinsheeks3691d ago

Is there anything i can say or do to stop you from making this mistake :( pls dont do it

randomass1713691d ago

Haha, I appreciate your concern but I just want to try it for myself.

Seraphim3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

I think a lot of bad reviews are missing the point. This isn't a Ninja Gaiden title even though it shares it's name w/ NG loosely because it's set in the same world and features Ryu. I mean just read the last paragraph of this review.

Personally as a huge NG fan and action/adventure junkie there's a lot about this game that didn't interest me. Character design, premise, etc. I mean even the game play doesn't look all that good. It's rare I rent anything but I might do just that or wait until it's $20-30. Or maybe I'll just pass and continue clearing out the backlog and new releases. Having said that I find it hard to believe that the core mechanics and game itself are as bad as ratings are portraying it to be. In it's own right I'm pretty sure it's at worst a good to average game. I think too many are placing too much weight in the name and not reviewing the game in it's own right. Of course how games are reviewed is another long winded complaint/argument we can have. These arrogant pricks think they're critics and as a gaming journalist they should not be critics. They should be rating games w/o prejudice...

jetlian3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

Sounds like the review is based on watching videos of the game. I dont think they even played it

I got it haven't played yet

randomass1713691d ago

I only use reviews as a basis to get an idea of what is coming when I play the game. I don't usually use them to determine my own opinion.

Deadpoolio3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

No none of these reviews are missing the point. The game is just ass all the way around anyway you slice it, it is still buffalo diarrhea. The weapon, considering you never get any other sword sucks, the all over the map difficulty sucks, the camera sucks, it's only got 7 missions, the upgrades are 90% worthless..Hell the camera is the worst thing about this awful game.....

There really isn't anything good to say about this game other than the premise sounded interesting and it had promise since Inafune and Team Ninja worked on it....

I'm just glad I know a store manager at gamestop and was able to return it. the only way anyone should subject themselves to this garbage is when its either a PS+ title or $9.99, if anything these reviews sound like they're being generous

dark-kyon3691d ago

sorry guys but i never trust reviews of hack slash games, the reviewers are ever casual gamers what in his dream can beat a great hack slash how devil may cry 3.

antikbaka3690d ago (Edited 3690d ago )

After marvelous Soul Sacrifice, it hurts to see Keiji Inafune fail so much

Elda3690d ago

I'm having fun with it so far.

Wow! I seriously loved the first one. Don't know why it was reviewed poorly, it was fun as hell and the humor was great.

I seriously hope they make a sequel in the same style as the first.

isarai1958d ago

Everyone loved the concept, just gameplay wise it fell a bit flat compared to the previous games. I myself never played it but am really excited to hear they are doing another in the spinoff series. I've always had an interest in it, but just never pulled the trigger on actually buying it, might go back and actually play the first one now though.

gangsta_red1958d ago

The gameplay was very fast arcade type action that I felt was just as challenging as the regular Ninja Gaiden series.

What made the game great was the fact you played as a villain oit for revenge...from what I remember, it's been a long time. It was such a great concept going through levels trying to get revenge on Ryu.

Definitely give it a shot if you ever come across it, I don't remember the reviews for the game but I definitely had a blast when I played it.

Sm00thNinja1957d ago

Easily the worst Ninja Gaiden game.... Well maybe 3. 3 was pretty bad

Smokehouse1957d ago

I had the first on 360, the art style was awesome.

Prubar1957d ago

Finally got around to playing this one this year. I understand why it got bashed in the reviews but I still enjoyed it as a whole. The combat combos were solid and the traversal prompts looked sweet.

syphon321957d ago

Me too, but I had fun playing it, with the quirky insane combos and the hackneyed story.. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously, just enjoy whacky beat em up nonsense

Imortus_san1957d ago

Resurrect the worst Ninja Gaiden game ever, WTFF?

Ugh. I really miss good Ninja Garden games

Rimeskeem2650d ago

Aye, the soil was always fertile and the plants grew fast!

bouzebbal2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

Nioh is just one more of the great franchises made by Koei Tecmo

CorndogBurglar2649d ago

Ninja Gaiden is a totally different type of game than Nioh. Its a fast-paced, incredibly technical action game. It has its own place and should not mirror the Nioh/Dark Souls/Bloodborne formula. They too have their own place.

IamTylerDurden12649d ago

But Nioh clearly has Ninja Gaiden combat elements infused into it.

IamTylerDurden12649d ago

Nioh is the future of Team Ninja.

chrisx2651d ago

Nioh is the Beginning of the Nioh Franchise, the latest amazing Playstation exclusive

UCForce2649d ago

Man, this game is just good.

PhoenixUp2651d ago

I sure hope not. Ninja Gaiden has its own unique identity

starchild2649d ago

I agree. Nioh is awesome in my book. But Ninja Gaiden in its heyday was outstanding as well. It had it's own mechanics and its own flavor. I hope we one day see another Ninja Gaiden game.

Team Ninja: "[Ninja Gaiden] Needs to be in the Shadows for a While"

Team Ninja creative director discusses the whereabouts of the iconic action franchise, says Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z "wasn't the right move" for the series.

Gaming4Life19812678d ago

I am a die hard fan but ninja gaiden 3 sucked so make it more like 1 and 2 or not at all.

spicelicka2678d ago

Yes! Specially the physics of NG2, still my favourite hack n slash game.

Movefasta19932677d ago (Edited 2677d ago )

ng2 has great physics, the combos felt great to land. The 360 version was insane, the gore and the ultra aggressive enemies .Miss the game :(

thatguyhayat2678d ago

They dumbed it down soo much. But luckily these guys listen to fans so hopefully they learnt their lesson

blitz06232678d ago

I would totally buy a 1-2 HD remaster. Hell, throw in 3 there too

DarXyde2678d ago

Ninja Gaiden was always HD.

darthv722678d ago

You do know Ninja Gaiden Sigma was an HD remaster of Ninja Gaiden 1/Black right? you could say the same about NG Sigma 2 as it relates to NG2.

Gaming4Life19812677d ago

Agreed. I loved ninja gaiden 1 but ninja gaiden 2 is my favorite and i would do anything for a ninja gaiden 1 & 2 remaster.

They should have known better than to make Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. That didn't look or feel like a Ninja Gaiden game at all. They need to make another one like Ninja Gaiden Sigma that came out on PS3. That was good.

Seraphim2678d ago

Agreed. They never should have put the NG name on that product. While I see why they wanted to do something different they should have left the game sell on it's own merit, or lack thereof in this case. The idea was pretty good but the execution was poor. Furthermore they could have sold it as in the NG realm w/o calling it NG. At the end of the day it had absolutely no business having NG in it's name.

Anyway, while I have faith in the team I think they might not have the vision to recreate NG as we saw it in 1 and 2 nor are they sure how to improve upon it or where to go now. That was proof in 3 when Itagaki was out & it was up to the remainder of Team Ninja to create 3. In Ni-Oh, if successful I can see Team Ninja focusing on a sequel and not coming back to NG for some time. Which is a shame.

CrimsonWing692678d ago

or why don't you redeem yourself and make a seriously good ninja gaiden game instead of making fans wait.

Xb1ps42678d ago

Ninja gaiden... loved that game and remember those great moment on the Xbox.. I'm not much of a fan of remasters but I would buy a pro or Scorpio remaster of ninja gaiden day one...
