Blue Dragon Surpassed MGS4 and Zelda in Japanese Famitsu Top 10!

Yes, you've read it right. In the top 10 poll of the most popular magazine in Japan, Famitsu, Xbox 360's RPG Blue Dragon has just managed its way up to the 3rd most anticipated game in this country, surprisingly leaving behind titanic titles in the region like Metal Gear Solid 4 and The Legend Of Zelda.

This is the first time ever that an Xbox or Xbox 360 game reaches such high levels of anticipation in the land of the rising sun. Big names like Sakaguchi, Toriyama and Uematsu and the massive advertising in Japan are undoubtedly the causes behind this achievement some would call a miracle.
1. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Square Enix)
2. Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Capcom)
3. Blue Dragon (Xbox 360, Microsoft)
4. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3, Konami)
5. Summon Night 4 (PS2, Banpresto)
6. The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess (Wii, Nintendo)
7. Yakuza 2 (PS2, Sega)
8. Dawn of Mana (PS2, Square Enix)
9. Super Robot Taisen : Original Generations (PS2, Banpresto)
10. Tales of Destiny (PS2, Bandai Namco)
11. Final Fantasy VI Advance (GBA, Square Enix)
12. Higurashi no Naku Kei ni Matsuri (Alchemist, NDS)
13. Gyakutensaiban 4 (NDS, Capcom)
14. Furai no Syren (NDS, Sega)
15. Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (Xbox 360, Tecmo)
16. Monster Hunter Portable 2 (PSP, Capcom)
17. Dragon Quest Monsters J (NDS, Square Enix)
18. Monster Hunter 3 (PS3, Capcom)
19. The Legend of Zelda : Phantom Hourglass (NDS, Nintendo)
20. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, Nintendo)

i guess it's good news that a 360 game has garnered such interest from Japanese gamers. i for one am awaiting Blue Dragon, though maybe not as much as FFXIII and White Knight Story. however, the title of the article makes Blue Dragon appear to be the most popular game, when it is in fact surpassed by two PS3 titles (one being a multi-platform release, which itself is quite telling). but then again, these are just polls. i see FFXIII, Zelda, MGS4 and maybe even Blue Dragon selling about equally in the land of the rising sun.

Aquanox6374d ago

Breaking down your statement, it means the Blue Dragon is only surpassed by one PS3 exclusive, while the 2nd place belongs to a multiplatform game that is very likely to come on Xbox 360 as well.

Given the catastrophic history of the Xbox division in Japan, this is a huge achievement. If you could travel on time and tell this to anyone 1 year ago, they'd think you need some serious phsycological treatment.

death monk6373d ago

I think the reason Resident Evil 5 is listed for PS3 only and not both consoles is pretty simple. Japanese gamers are excited for that game ON PS3. I'm sure the way their game voting is setup, they would have the game listed separately for the individual console.

Aquanox6373d ago

Resident Evil is listed on PS3 because it wont be out on Wii, and has never been released on Xbox 360.

Once the official Xbox 360 version announcement is made, their perspective about the availability of the game might change.

Shin_Akakage6373d ago

It's almost like I've stepped into the twilight zone...a X360 exclusive game that's ranked higher MGS4 and Zelda on Famitsu most wanted list? That's pretty amazing. Huge achievement for Msoft there. FFXIII is on there because..well its FF. I still don't understand why FF is so popular, personally I never liked it, but live and let live. I can however understand why RE5 is high on this list..RE4 game of the year last year on many sites/publications/awards shows. So its natural that RE5 is high on the most wanted list.

RE5 was officially announce for X360...it is a multiplatform title.

I must say that vid I saw about Lost Odyssey made me turned off a bit (Smacking humongusly huge robot to pieces with a sword). Not to say it will be a bad title, but I wonder if there is more like this in Lost, it better have a good story and nice gfx.

Blue Dragon I hope will make that FF quality the creator of this title is famous for.

InMyOpinion6374d ago

They need to open their eyes, japanese gaming culture is f***** up! More conservative than right wing christians lol!

Krimson6374d ago

Great news for Blue Dragon. It's also great to see a new IP up there amongst a bunch of long running franchises. I mean... Final Fantasy has 1st place by "brand name" alone.

Tut6374d ago

It helps when you consistently make chart-topping games... which has been the case in almost all Final Fantasy installments, even getting the honor of having the #1 game ever created and another within the top five.

To clarify: Reputation + Quality = Brand Name

LuminousAphid6374d ago

But you still have to ask yourself; there have been so many of these games, are people playing them and waiting for them now just because everyone else likes them?

One example that comes to mind is a film a watched the other day. Everyone always told me that 2001: A Space Odyssey was the best film of all time, so I finally decided to watch it. I found out that it was, in fact, a steaming pile of $%@#. I'm convinced that people love that movie because everyone else does (particularly since the recommendations came mostly from the school of art at the university I attend, which is the most pretentious group I've ever met). Personally, I feel this is the case with a lot of Final Fantasy Material as well; everyone bought FFVIII just because VII was good, FFXI was never that great, and FFXII is just FFXI offline for the PS2. A lot of it does have to do with purely name association. FFXIII could be the worst game ever, but I'm sure a lot of people in the whole world would still buy it.

Silver Bull3t6374d ago

Off-topic...
You do know 2001 was released nearly 40 years ago right?... For its day that movie was hands down the sh!t. Considering they had no CG effects the movie is impressive and visually stunning. If it's a steaming pile of $%@#, I'll take seconds.

OC_MurphysLaw6374d ago

Not only was it released nearly 40 years ago, consider it was released well before special effects giant of the time Star Wars. Then you also need to factor in that they had ZERO pictures of earth from space to work with...let alone color schemes and yet the representation of earth from space is pretty incredible given those limitations. It is a masterpeice of SCI-FI....like it or not.

I mean who would've of thunket that a 360 game would be ahead of MEtal Gear. I know I didn't, not yet atleast.

LuminousAphid6374d ago

Haha, for me, ANY x360 game is above Metal Gear (yes, that includes even Full Auto).

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ52d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia52d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware73052d ago (Edited 52d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing6952d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y52d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex51d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y50d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

Tody_ZA26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972127d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus127d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda125d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B125d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981125d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot125d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda124d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot124d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy124d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay125d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12127d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay125d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB125d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
