Review: Infamous: Second Son Shows What The PS4 Is Capable Of, And Nothing More | KSD

After 4 months of waiting – since the release of the PlayStation 4 only brought us just 2 Sony exclusives – developer’s Sucker Punch have added a 3rd game to the exclusive roster. Welcome to the next-generation of video gaming – it has finally arrived! inFamous Second Son is a new breed of Infamous game that see’s the departure of main protagonist Cole MacGrath, and introduces our new hero (or villain) Delsin Rowe. Set several years after the events of Infamous 2, the DUP (Department of Unified Protection) have sealed off the city of Seattle and are cracking down on conduits – people with special powers and abilities. After Delsin realises that he is a conduit himself, he decides to take it into his own hands to stop the DUP.

I don't get why people judge this game as if it was the savior of the PS4. It's the first AAA game for the console from Sony, and there are a lot more coming that we can't even imagine yet. The game is great and fun just like the other 2 and it's about enjoying it. In any moment is it supposed to be the best game ever. Reviewers just keep grading Sony exclusives more strict than MS's and Nintendo's, I don't know why; but Sony keeps delivering.

Another thing, it's interesting to think that this game is showing what the PS4 can do, but we will look back from 2020 and laugh about how outdated the graphics of this game are. I can't wait to see what kind of games we will get at the end of this generation, but surely it's going to be a great ride in the meantime.

Reviewers always seem to have a point to prove on Sony games. Quite often they'll air a gripe right into the first paragraph and set up their conclusion that the game didn't do anything new, redefine the genre, or cure cancer.

I guess because so many gamers believe Sony consoles are better and Sony is a better platform holder, than they should be judged at a higher standard.

The problem is many bring baggage with them, and their views are formed partially at least, before they ever get there hands on it, and they'll just look for any negative (or even something lacking they hoped would be there) as a justification for enforcing that standard that only exists in their own minds.

Infamous2983702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Nitpicky reviewers are alot these days.

johndoe112113702d ago

Great post Bathyj. It boggles my mind how some reviewers would nitpick this game and say it doesn't do anything new when there has never been any game on any system like this and then they would turn and call titanfall "groundbreaking" and "original" when that game ,even though it is a lot of fun, consists of multiple ideas from multiple games slapped into one online experience.

After playing infamous last night and acquiring the neon powers, my mind was blown. The mechanics and abilities in that game are off the charts. The graphics and lighting are unreal. That game made the first two infamous games look like ps1 one games.

At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their opinion. The problem is some of these reviewers seem to be using different standards when measuring sony games as compared to microsoft games.

Silly Mammo3702d ago

Gameinformer does a pretty good parody of this exact attitude in a review of MLB: The Show in their April Fools section.

What happened to inFamous Second Son is the same thing that happened to Heavenly Sword and the first Uncharted game on the PS3.

Compared to their peers, those games were easily 9/10 games. But you know when it comes to Sony games, the standards go up. It almost feels like most Xbox games are reviewed with a "Thank God it's Friday" mindset. And Sony games are reviewed with a "Faaack! it is only still Tuesday" mindset. For a Sony game to get the scores that Microsoft games get, it has to make sure that all "t's" are crossed and "i's" dotted. Look at Uncharted 2 and 3, countless awards, same with The Last of Us. Killzone 2 and 3 had to have graphics that challenges Titanfall in order to earn their deserved stripes.

The only real problem I have with the hypocrisy shown to inFamous Second Son is the simple fact that this is one of the Smoothest, most polished game we've seen released on consoles in a very long while. And when you think of the scale of the game, it makes it that much more impressive. And somehow, another game which released buggy, lagging, not graphically impressive for a next gen game gets all the pass.

I think that sends the wrong message to the industry. That we somehow don't really care if our games run smoothly, glitch-free, and polished. If a game is not optimized, your review should reflect that.

Could you imagine if a journalist reviewing cars did what the journalist reviewing games do.

"so we have this beautiful car, fully-loaded, leather interior, heated seats front and rear, navigation control, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, great gas mileage, air bags every where, one of the safest cars around, all for $30,000 but it does nothing new" 3/5

"Now we have this other car, it is not quite as beautiful as the one we mentioned earlier(who cares right?), but it is an absolute blast to drive. 0-60 in 4 seconds, but what's half a second right? front and side air bags, and it has a parking camera which the previous car lacks, all of for the low price of $30,000" 5/5

Said journalist would be jobless very quick...

I could only give you a "well said" bubble cos it didnt have a "really really well said, total nailed it" bubble.

Funny you should mention Heavenly Sword sword, cos I've remarked at the similarities myself. Criminally underrated game. Great voice acting. Best facial motion capture for its time. Very likeable characters. Really fun gameplay.

And it came out at a time when everyone was saying Playstation has no games, (I guess Resistance and Motorstorm, two of the best launch games ever didnt count) and I've always thought once it did, PS3 turned a corner in many peoples eyes as far as outputting stellar content, and it never looked back.

I also think enough credit is not being given to the technical side of the game (or they all admit its awesome but dont reflect it in the score.) The particle effects are surely the best ever. The permanent damage? How often does that happen? You mentioned the smoothness. Does anyone even care that this game is "only" 30fps when the framerate is so rock solid, the action so intense, and the picture so clear. I mean that draw distance is incredible.

Yeah, theres not much here we havent played before, but never this well, and surely one must recognise that mastering a new technical beast will help unlock new gameplay possibilities. Expecting everything to turn on a dime in the first couple months is a bit much.

What you's two have stated is how its been since there was a western contender for the western media to champion. Home team backing and all that. Double standards but because of this, sony studios just work harder and produce better experiences because their work is judged to a higher level.

The double speak reviewers use is documented and there for all to see. I'm no way saying either sony games are all great or that other platforms games aren't ever judged harshly, just that there is a pattern and predictability to how games are judged.

Personally I understand home team bias. I've pointed many times that there are different biases shown by different factions. If you look at edge for example... we all know how harsh their scores can be but look at some of the scores they have given to uk based devs regardless of platform... check out their scores for their neighbours/mates games like codemasters. You'll find they're on average above the average whereas all other titles are on average below it, coincidence¿

My biggest annoyance is that there are people here on n4g that believe bias doesn't exist at all.... How naive can you be to believe that. I'm not saying every journo is paid or bias or whatever, just that the culture of score manipulation is part n parcel of most medias including our gaming one.

This reviewer is entitled to their opinion so I'm not going to complain for the sake of it, I'll just check for consistency. If they are consistent then I'll gladly consider them reputable even if I dont like or agree with their opinion; if not then thats just another one ill take less notice of.

BOLO3702d ago

Your comment is a homing missile on the hypocrisy of some reviewers. Well put.

miyamoto3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Its business as usual.

Its that time of year.
PlayStation exclusives are the most awaited spectacles of console gaming. These bloggers view these games as equivalent to hits, clicks, business, money, revenue. They have to think of strategies to make the most clicks out of PlayStation exclusive games. That is how their twisted mind works & they are DESTROYING their credibility in the process. Good thing there is UStream, Twitch, YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo etc. where we can see and prove for ourselves how these games playout.

mayberry3702d ago

If this article writer is implying Infamous second son and Killzone Shadowfall(it was mentioned in the article), are not "good" games, I disagree.

badboy7763702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Reviewers want hits.

GW2123702d ago

I love Infamous. Love it. I planned on playing for an hour last night because I had some grown-up stuff to do later in the evening. Four hours later I finally put the DS4 down. Oops.

On KZ, I will say I don't love it. It's ok. Graphics were, at the time, the best on a console (Infamous wears that crown now) but I just couldn't get into the game itself.

chrissx3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

All these butthurt writers these days tho. Infamous 2nd son is an amazing game, both in gameplay, graphics and replay value. Def a true next-gen game

GW2123702d ago

It's the first true next-gen game on either console. I agree with you there.

I'm not sure what's up with some of the reviews. Saying it's nothing more than a graphical showcase is flat out wrong. I believe there are some ulterior motives at work here.

Before any Xbox kids go off about opinions and my conspiracy theories, I'll say the same thing about Titanfall. I, at one point, thought it was only COD with mechs. Having logged meaningful time on it, I can say it is not. It annoys me when reviewers/commenters say that about Titanfall. I have my own issues with Titanfall, just like I do with any other game, but to try to put it down as some shallow knock-off is flat out wrong as well.

BcozoftheImplication3702d ago

By the sounds of things this twat hasn't even played the game!! Meh...

PhilJowns3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Problem this gen is that both consoles are basically PC in a box so the devs can pretty much push them to limit straight away.

Don't expect as big a graphical jump over time as was possible with previous generation. As for games in 2020 they will look better but you will be playing them on a PS5 or Next Xbox.

The law of diminishing returns.

How Does inFAMOUS Second Son Hold up 10 Years Later?

inFAMOUS Second Son was one of PS4's best exclusives, but does it hold up a decade later?

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM123d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck123d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati122d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88154d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183153d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie153d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
