Should The FPS Genre Return To World War 2?

OnlySP: Ever since the booming success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, FPS games everywhere felt the need to mimic the modern setting in the hopes to capture that successful spark. While some games have certainly delivered awesome experiences in the boots of a modern soldier, the focus on modern shooters has led to a degree of stagnation. Is it time for the FPS genre to go to their roots and go back in time to World War 2? Let’s discuss.

Red Orchestra Never left!

Return.....ONly if done correctly.

shivvy243687d ago

i wanna play as a nazi this time !

Naga3687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

-.-

Yeah... just imagine it. You could play a WWII RPG where you run a concentration camp and earn XP for torturing prisoners, executing children, gassing minorities, and performing live dissections of pregnant women.

Or alternatively, you could brush up on your history and learn what a horrible idea all of that would be. There's a reason we don't play as the Nazis - they were a despicable blight on human history.

Palitera3687d ago

It won't happen. This subject is a dogma today and it is like you played as someone torturing Jesus on the way of the cross, getting points for each blood drop. It is equivalent to eating children. Alive. Starting by the eyes.

Hitler is "the antichrist".

malokevi3687d ago

cool idea, but doubtful. The only way to pull it off without offending the bleeding hearts would be to have it clearly from the perspective of a crumbling Nazi empire, rife with themes of futility and amorality. A game like that would be lacking that sense of grand heroism that WWII typically invokes.

Naga3687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

@ malokevi

Right, because it's only the "bleeding hearts" who are offended by the extermination of 6 million Jews and the rest of the death and destruction brought about by the Third Reich.

Leaving that massive hang-up aside, the problem is that in crafting a story, you need to utilize relatable elements in both cause and character. Without massive revisions to historical reality, there is very little most people will find relatable in terms of the Nazi cause, or the character of the Nazi supporter. You need characters and stories with which the audience will empathize, and that's pretty much not going to happen with such a universally despised organization or movement.

Ninjamonkey823687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

@Palitera I want to play a game torturing Jesus that would be a laugh :D. Ya know being the roman centurion poking Jesus on the cross with the spear :D Bonus points for nailing him on....

Edit..

Ill go a bit further actually this is where people have issues atm i believe they can't see past the fact what is on the screen is just a game no mater the content. It will not affect those when they turn there PC are Tvs off.

OWWO3687d ago

yeah playing as nazi and killing jews will be great........just kidding

UnholyLight3687d ago

I think you guys took his comment out of context.

I think what Shivvy24 meant was to have a German campaign...not a game revolving around killing of jews! It would be interesting to have a couple missions detailing a German side to an encounter(s) in the game.

malokevi3687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

@naga

oh, give it a rest.

It's the bleeding hearts who are offended by the mere idea of a game based on the Nazi perspective. you are clearly one of them.

Nobody ever said the game was going to glorify Naziism. It's a period of history that happened, why should it be off limits just because it causes you emotional distress?

the second half of your post basically mirrors mine. It would be hard to package a game from the Nazi perspective that people would feel good about playing, or be able to relate to the story as it has been commonly understood: as a heroic fight against an evil empire.

@below

maybe you aught to read my entire original comment before telling me to read yours. you are basically repeating what I have already stated.

Calm yourself. nobody likes genocide. This discussion isn't about genocide. The Nazi's did more than butcher jews, you know.

Naga3687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

@ malokevi

It surely doesn't cause me emotional distress, but thank you kindly for such a classy response. There's nothing quite like being marginalized for expressing moral opposition to mass genocide....

But since you "asked", I'm pretty sure I already addressed why the concept is unworkable. Maybe read my whole comment next time.

Palitera3687d ago

No, you can't kill a jew as a nazi. But you'd probably get a trophy for killing a nazi with a jew.

Irishguy953687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

We get to play as the Russians? Why not the Nazis? Oh...thats right, Stalin and his madness didn't exist.

I want a game from the Nazi perspective, I would like one from a Nazi who doesn't realize what is really going on in the concentration camps, like the vast majority of them didn't.

Naga3687d ago

@ irishguy95

Except that with the atrocities perpetrated by Stalin, the Russians themselves were more the victims than anyone else. It's a different kind of story.

@ malokevi

The problem with accusing me of not reading your entire comment is that you added the second half sometime after I had already responded. I read what was there and responded to it. You should probably just calm down.

CarlosX3603686d ago

Oh my god. Let the idea die in a fire, please. I'm NOT guying to buy the next World War 2 game. I've had enough of those games. I played COD2/3, dropped it, and never looked back.

Now, if any game compares remotely close to Modern Warfare... Count me in.

World War 2 games is dead to me.

WW2 FPS are usually a bit more fun and balanced.

* WW2 weapons were naturally less accurate than we have now. ( Some models)

* More variety in gun types and tons of experimentation in weapons over the span of 4-5 years gives creators a lot of options to work with.

* Locations - Anywhere in the world, that a Battle from WW2 was fought.

This modern bs is just boring now.

Ausbo3687d ago

I want a next Gen wwII game. I'm starting to get sick of these modern shooters

theflyindutchman3687d ago

Yes please!!!
With frostbite 3 on next gen........

uncharted563687d ago

Are you guys serious? WW era, modern era has been played out at this point. some How about something creative and new. Why not do something like alternate history like Resistance series but better or something in prehistoric area or aliens.

Stringerbell3687d ago

Why not, just cover locales and events that haven't been done to death. Ie Lets NOT storm Normandy for the 1000th time.

WeAreLegion3687d ago

Yes! Though I'm admittedly more excited for the new Civil War game.
