Call of Duty 2014 is "ambitious" and "creative," Sledgehammer says

Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey from Sledgehamer Games just took the stage at GDC 2014 in San Francisco and revealed a in-game render of one of the characters in this year’s Call of Duty (2014).

I was greatly looking forward to a new COD this year before the announcement that SH was making it. Now not so much. Not because SH can't make a great COD game but because I was looking forward to some new zombie killing on Treyarch COD. Really wish SH was making next years and Treyarch's was coming out this year. If SH can impress me with gameplay details and a cool trailer I might get this game

CoD is on a 3 year dev cycle. the last CoD worked on by SH was MW3 so it makes sense for it to come out this year, treyarch released BO2 in 2012 which means next year you'll see a CoD game by them.

SH worked on the singleplayer portion of MW3, and DLC of MW3. The multiplayer was done by IW, i mean, the leftovers of IW.

Boy, what are talking about? SH only worked on MW3's SP and some DLC and the story, at least to me.. a near perfect wrap up of the game. It was fun and engaging, and kept me playing until the very end. It was the husk of IW that made that crap fest of MP in MW3. Also, they haven't worked on a game since, so that means the this game could have potentially have been in DEV since 2011-2012.

Agreed! There were some really amazing artwork that people created! That's one thing I do like about Call of Duty.... EVERYONE plays it so when they create something like this (the emblem creator) there REALLY is some great artwork out there.

Until they decide to actually change the netcode so it does not benefit shitty internet connections while punishing excellent ones; the franchise will continue to not be worth it. Call of Duty 4 will always be the best!

Cod 4 waw and mw2 are the best. SH has to inovate hope please make it better than mw3. It cant be worst than ghosts if they dont inovate cod they will kill cod cause titanfall its amazing but its missing some personalization.

Hopefully they add Titanfall's parkour mechanics to the new CoD, that would freshen up the series IMO and of course, a new engine.

Call of Duty needs to be released as a multiplayer only title for a reduced price ($20-$30). The developers don't put enough effort into the game in general and even more so for the campaign. I think that the best course of action is improving the multiplayer experience and not charging 50 DAMN DOLLARS for map packs. Seriously, what that hell guys?

Thank god you ain't in charge of the COD series lol. Believe it or not quite a lot of people like the campaigns in COD and if they got rid of the co-op modes Spec Ops, Zombies etc to go MP only, COD would slowly die. Hell some people only buy Treyarchs games to play Zombies.

I apologize. I neglected to mention the other modes like zombies (which I do like) and spec ops. No those modes should not be removed. Let me ask you a question though. Are you ok with buying the same game (with slight variation) every year? I used to buy COD every year, then I noticed the game hasn't changed much at all since Modern Warfare 2, so I stopped buying it and Call of Duty will slowly die anyway unless the developers freshen up the series.

Actually that's a flat out lie. They a have never hyped their games as being "the best one yet" or the "most ambitious and creative".

This is the first time they've said something like this. We do have next-gen consoles out there that are selling really well. I'm sure they finally made that leap that we've been asking for for years.

I was thinking the same thing. I never heard them refer to any of the cods as ambitious and creative.So maybe activision is gonna try and allow these guys to be a little different with their cods. Or they flipped open a dictionary and are bsing us again.I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

But that could be a nice setup activision has, if they allow it.IW doing the regular cod ,3arc doing the scifi stuff and sh testing whatever.

People don't always keep buying because they like it. Sometimes, they buy because they're indoctrinated; I think much of the Call of Duty crowd fits into that category, you included.

IF they actually do push out the changes like they're claiming, it might be worth a look. Until then, it's just more hype.

COD gameplay is what people love about it.

-They don't need a brand new engine, that would surely have much higher latency than we're used to and might even compromise that 60FPS experience on PS3/360.

-Animations do need an overhaul. You're right about this one. Much improvement can be made here.(The knifing animation in Ghosts is much better than any other COD game)

-Gameplay DOES NOT NEED CHANGE. This is why I buy Call Of Duty every year. This is why MILLIONS buy it every year. Gameplay does however need to EVOLVE and take that NEXT STEP.

I think the overhaul will happen this time around. You're right, it's needed. Problem was multi-gen platforms. Need to focus on one and maximize it.

Will I buy this laggy garbage If they don't use dedicated servers? Hell no.

They need to start with a complete new engine. All games need to be hostet by dedicated servers. If no go to hell with this crap Activision.

Next Year I will hopefully play Homefront 2. Cry Engine 3 + dedicated servers. Goodbye COD.

Pretty bold statement,I feel they're going to deliver a really good COD,BO2 and Ghosts were mediocre glad i skipped them.A new studio must change the formula a bit now plus having 3 years of development now and more familiarity with next gen consoles.IW and 3yarch are washed up now,they made 2 CODs with a metascore lower than 85 which is a disgrace for the most popular shooter and game of last gen.They need to step it up a bit if they want COD to increase and not decrease in terms of sales.I Think it's MW4,3yarch has BO and IW has Ghosts
