GDC: Controlling Infamous: Second Son With Your Eyes | IGN

What if you could play Infamous: Second Son without ever touching DualShock 4's right analog stick? One of IGN's Senior Editor just that, and it's totally awesome.

After you’ve spent a long time in the games industry like IGN's Colin Moriarty has, trade shows tend to become predictable affairs. He has attended many E3s, a couple of Gamescoms, and even a Tokyo Game Show, and they’re all pretty much the same: a glut of games on show floors and behind-closed-doors to play and write about.

Having beaten Second Son this past weekend, he wasn’t looking to play the game in demo form, but there was something special about this particular setup. Affixed to the PlayStation 4 was an SMI camera. And this SMI camera, as he was about to find out, was going to let him control Infamous: Second Son with his eyes.

woah... this is definatly the eye-tracking son was working on with NASA. i wonder if they will use it in P.Morpheus... that would be something else. Sony is Epic.

Fishy Fingers3708d ago

The camera is actually created by SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) and Sony have been toying with their tech for sometime http://m.prnewswire.com/new...

Still, impressive as it appears I wouldn't expect to see it outside of R&D for sometime. Certainly wouldn't be included in Morpheus as the cameras in their current form are already to expensive for consumer devices.

starchild3708d ago

Yeah, I saw this on The Verge and in that video he still used the controller to control the left thumbstick movement and the powers, etc. The eye tracking replaced the right stick camera control.

PoSTedUP3708d ago

ah true. i read sony was working on eye tracking with nasa a few months back. still rad tho, +bubs fishy.

GTgamer3708d ago

What material on that controller even gives you a hint of scanning :/.

TheTowelBoy3708d ago (Edited 3708d ago )

Off topic: A: I've never believed that MS has a super secret pact with the NSA so they can stare at the USA and the rest of the world as they eat Doritos, and sit playing games. B: The DS4... Honestly, I don't even. "throws hands in the air"

Hey redcar, I'm a Nigerian prince... Wanna make some fast money??

And the bait is set..........

BattleTorn3708d ago

by that logic they already have all our finger prints from every mouse-track pad....

After being trained for years through playing games all the way back as far as the Atari 2600, I would find this incredibly weird and I would have a very hard time keeping my unused thumb off of the other analog stick. Might as well cut that bitch clean off cause it would constantly be getting in the way.

TheTowelBoy3708d ago (Edited 3708d ago )

Well see with this setup it allows for your thumb to do other things. Yes, we've all been trained the last few gens, almost in two demensions. Left stick- movement, rigbt stick- camera. All this MIGHT do is allow another dimension of gameplay, or control into the mix with freeing up your left thumb. Potentially ;)

HighResHero3708d ago

I'll stick with traditional "thumb tracking" unless we are talking about VR implementation.

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM123d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck123d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati123d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88155d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183154d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie154d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
