How does Project Morpheus compare to Oculus Rift? - Eurogamer

Eurogamer :

"What Sony does have, though, is the ecosystem to make virtual reality a viable proposition for the living room - and in its open-armed relationship with indie developers, it's also got a community of its own who will help shape the future of what feels like the most exciting, disruptive technology to come to video games in an age. Regardless of that, though, it's made an accomplished start, and brought the VR dream a significant step closer to becoming a reality for all.

And what a feeling of immersion it is. Project Morpheus' tracking feels on a par with Oculus, even taking into account the advances brought about by the implementation of Crystal Cove. That's no doubt thanks to the PlayStation Camera's input, and the latency seems impressively low when moving your head. Even better, it allows you full 360-degree movement, letting you look behind you - a factor that's exploited to great effect in Sony London Studio's The Deep."

"Morpheus is impressive, then, and as a starting point for Sony's work with virtual reality it's encouraging that it's already achieved a parity of sorts with Oculus"

This is really encouraging, it can only get better from here. It sounds like sony is doing it "right" like the oculus founder said he hoped they would.

I don´t know, call me old school or what not but neither Oculus Rift and Sony´s VR "dongle" or what ever Valves has in peto... all these VR won´t change gaming as much as we hope for.

Sitting in front my 65" plasma and having that VR on, why would i want to wear such thing? Just so im able to look left and right, if VR then 360º please and not just a replacement for the peripheral vision .

And even then, standing on the same spot and rotate 360º every time you get attacked.. i mean come on let´s be the realist here :

>WE get lazy the longer the day, after an 8h labour work nobody wants to pretend they´re climbing trees or be a prof. dancer. Kinect does not work because of this, it´s a party "gimmick" no more, no less.

Main issue i´m having with these VR is that they are limited to certain genres in games. Platform won´t work? Wanna play Super Mario 64 with Rift? Yeah.. makes no sense. Same with RTS and other genres, it´s limited to few games (FPS, Racing, Sport (some of´em), RPG).

In other words :

Contemporary games, mindset are not set/ready for VR gaming yet. Games and their mechanics need to be tweaked and optimized for the VR. People believe you only need to wear a VR and that you´re good to go.

it might work for FPS out of the box, but for everything else gamer devs have to make adjustments to make this a unique expierence. Again for a 180º replacement only, i will pass personally. You have to convince me to stand up and not sit and play from the couch.

One thing: Sony needs to have >20 games ready for their VR, 1x game only aint enough to move/promote a new gadget.

360º or shove off! :) /jm2c

Respectfully...You have no idea what you're talking about.

ALL your assumptions are based off misconceptions.
But, it's not really your fault. It's clear you've NEVER experienced VR and you're trying to imagine what it must be like.

PRESENCE.

It conveys a profound sense of presence.

To imply VR works with only "certain" types of games is erroneous. All games benefit from VR. Even non-gaming applications work perfectly with VR.
http://www.3deaspacesys.com... is a perfect example. It's a simple Desktop application. But, experienced through a VR space and you now feel as though you're running your PC from within it.

I'd also like to add, I've used approximately 600 unique VR applicatios and every one of them while seated.

Your concerns are unfounded.

Yaay4me3708d ago

you have to experience it man, its not what you think. Its a whole new way of interaction. the level of immersion is going to make you feel like everything else you have played up to this point should have been done with VR. trust me. (:

Sony tech might be what some call expensive, but it's never half a** done! Sony makes quality products across the board.

DawnOfDon3708d ago

Yes they do make great products but most of their products are overly expensive which is why they are in the financial positions they are in now

And the clock has started ticking for microsoft if they don't reveal theirs soon the majority of people will think its just a ps4 thing and on the other hand if they rush it they could potentially make an inferior version and either would probably be one of the final nails in the coffin... the next few months are going to be interesting!

jimbobbeers3709d ago (Edited 3709d ago )

This article has nothing to do with Microsoft. You really are a plonker.

jamstorr863709d ago

its still a valid point though. If Microsoft don't make plans for VR sharpish then there is a big potential for them to be really left behind if VR does in fact take off on the PC and PS4. and if they do rush something to market, in the same way many suspect occured with the xbox one, then there is potential for further negativity to be directed towards Microsoft.

djplonker3709d ago (Edited 3709d ago )

@jimbob

No but it is vr related...

DawnOfDon3708d ago (Edited 3708d ago )

Why does Microsoft need to 1up Sony by having their own VR headset? They need to do their own thing and keep doing what they vision with the future of Xbox, and focus on having great games and great online service.

If Microsoft wanted to have a VR headset with the X1 they will just have Occulus Rift

LightofDarkness3709d ago

Interesting, most other previews have stated that the tracking is not quite there yet when compared to the OR. Oh well, still sounds promising.

Cupid_Viper_33709d ago

I could be wrong here, but I think the other reviews I've read talked about how "body tracking" was not quite there yet.

In any case though, this is a prototype and still at the very least, a full year away.

A bit off topic: I currently have the Sony HMZ-T1 HMD with a 700in screen, and inFamous Second Son is going to look glorious on it. This is the closest I'll get to experiencing "Project Morpheus" until the final product is out I guess.

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts54d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos54d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts54d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa54d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
