GDC: Sony Project Morpheus VR Headset for PS4 Hands-on | IGN

New VR headset impresses, rivals Oculus Rift.

With the debut of Project Morpheus, Sony touted that virtual reality could play a critical role in the future of gaming. While the viability of VR as a mass market product remains unclear, a hands-on demo today proved that Project Morpheus is much more than just a gimmick for PlayStation. The prototype, though certainly still rough around the edges, meets and in some ways exceeds the kind of VR experiences we've seen from Oculus.

In spite of running off of a PS4 dev kit, the visual fidelity of the viewer is exceptional, and despite the additional load on the system's processing resources, runs smoothly with detailed characters, objects, and environments.

dude was so negative about Move.I think move could work really well in certain VR games.Think about playing Deep Down with 2 Moves(One Sword,One Shield)think about the experience you could have now....

I guarantee that a PSMove coupled with a VR headset would provide more accuracy and tactile feedback than just using your hands. It's easier to hold the PS Move in your hand and pretend it's a sword than just to hold your hand out and pretend you're gripping something.

I don't see why people are making a big deal over the camera requirement, as the Oculus Rift also needs a camera to work.

Down the line I can see Move being nothing more than an LED sensor you wear on your hands, with the headset and camera tracking your movements. It'll be sort of like this scene in Johnny Mnemonic:

I am all excited and all but what worries me is the cost. I mean I will buy it for sure but buying the PS eye, 2 move controllers the VR headset and a couple of games for it will cost upwards of 500!

Its a lot of cash... They should probably set the price at 200 maybe 250 at the maximum!

I dunno I am firmly on the fence on this. I have been very critical of all motion tech from move to Kinnect to ps eye. I however am intrigued by the prospect of vr gaming. I however am quite skeptical this will be properly Implemented to make it worthwhile

medman3709d ago

I'm pretty excited about it...it's new tech, and it could be very good. We shall see, but considering the positive comments from devs so far, I'd say Sony is on the right track to making vr a success on ps4.

whybag3709d ago

Couldn't be, I have it on the very good authority of random comments everywhere that IGN is nothing but a PS fanboy site. No way would they be critical of a PS peripheral...

Do not underestimate the power of playstation.

I think gloves would be a better option than move, would feel more realistic than pressing a button to tighten tighten grip

crazyCoconuts53d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
