Is the PlayStation 4 struggling in Japan?

Sony delayed the Japanese PlayStation 4 launch several months after the console was made available in Europe and North America (and other parts of the world) — a bold move, since Sony usually launches consoles in their home country first.

So far the launch has been selling better than the PS3.

At the time the PS3 was severely supply strained so its not the best comparison to use, but yeah its selling better.

PS4 will probably not move any big numbers for a couple more months (unless MGS and FF14 are very popular).

its launched in a non-holiday season with very little that is actually exclusive to the device atm (even less of that caters directly to the JPN market).

There are obvious signs to it not selling big numbers but its not a problem. I think teh PS4 is doing better than expected.

It is by no means struggling, it is actually doing very well. Especially with the lack of many Japanese style games it launched with, given a few months when it starts to get more games the sales will rise.

It's doing fine, just like the Wii U. Both consoles need more big sellers in Japan though.

They need to somehow get the Dragon Quest series and the sales will sky-rocket.

Sony can only sell as many as they can produce and they can only sell in one region how many of that production they decide to ship to that region. Currently Japan is getting smaller shipments because the majority of the shipments have gone to Europe and America in preparation for Infamous: Second Son. Once that's out of the way, we should start seeing a true representation of trends by mid April. Until then, there's no way of knowing how well the PS4 is doing in certain regions.

All we can be sure of at the moment is that Sony can't keep up with demand. That CAN'T continue for much longer and then they'll be able to assess how many consoles to ship around the world. Once they've done that, and we get a ball park number (after a month) we'll be able to estimate the average and decide on whether it's selling better or worse depending of course on whether it begins selling below or above that average.

Fluctuation are bound to happen and it's getting pretty stupid how quickly people go from announcing a victor to proclaiming a failure ... sometimes within the space of 2 flippin' weeks. At the moment the PS4 is a run away success and if I had to put a percentage on it's chances of sustaining a good run I'd put it at 70%. But there is and always will be the unknown, which is why I reserve that 30%.

People calling it another PS2 and people who think it will fail are premature. We're still in the 'let's wait and see' stage, and we really mustn't discount the X1 at this point. I believe the PS4 WILL outsell the X1 in the long run, but for the PS4 to be another PS2, it has to take HUGE market share from both Microsoft and Nintendo.
